Sea To Sky Corridor Backcountry Access Report

Probably should be in it's own thread, and I'm sure some of you already know about this.....

According to this week's Squamish Chief newspaper, the BC Govt. have just confirmed access to backcountry areas in the Sea To Sky corridor.

Here's a link to the consultant's (hired by the ILMB) report:

Thanks for posting this. It's odd that, as members of clubs, we never hear anything about this. BCSF never mentions it in the magazine either...

No problem. I suspect the Govt. just sent out a press release to the media, probably haven't yet informed the BCSF and clubs. Anyhow, here's another link to an article in this week's Whistler Pique news magazine entitled 'Snowmobile access confirmed for Sea to Sky'. It summarises the consultant's report.

First Ride at Brandywine

Rocks Rocks and More Boulders. Up top is gret blue sky and POW. The glacier is wide open with millions of holes. It was sketchy out there so after tracking it up a bit we got out of the glacier and played up on the snow fields.

Needs about 5 more feet. Had to drive up past the upper parking lot to even get snow under the tracks onthe road.

oh yeah:cool::cool::cool:

I knew Callaghan was off limits again this year but after looking at the maps, it looks like we are also banned from Rainbow Mountain. That REALLY bites! I rode Sproatt quite a bit last year and always ended up on Rainbow towards the end of the day and now they are taking away that too. Where is this going to end!?

Even though we are allowed to ride "part" of Sproatt, there is only a parking lot that will fit 8-10 trucks otherwise you get towed. The clubs cannot seem to do anything about parking and only support the Brandywine area because of trail fees. VERY frustrating!!!

Now that these areas have been banned to motorized vehicles, there is very little chance of getting these riding areas back after the Olympics unless faces change in government or there is enough opinions heard from the sledding community. Even after all the petitions we sent in last season....nothing changed or most likely will change. Is this one step closer to the end for sledding the Sea to Sky corridor?

Rainbow mountain closure

Sproatt has aways been a bit of a "grey" area when it comes to sledding and closures since it is considered a watershed area. I think the only thing that has stopped the government from closing it is the fact that there is a commercial operator in there that is losing operating area due to the olympics (Callaghan). Having said that, I agree there should be a better parking area if they are going to keep it open - it's a really great place to ride. I've never really been on Rainbow from the Sproatt side - and that looks like were the closure is (Gin and Tonic lakes), although I've ridden Rainbow from the Cougar mountain side way more times than I'd like to admit.
The one that caught my attention was the proposed route through the Soo valley. What a Gong show that would be getting up through the creek bed to the ice cap. Don't ask me how to get there, I've only heard rumors about it ;-) but apparently somebody let the cat outta the bag for the Big Dawg last year.
