Muskoka buys 858...

I have a 24’ 9R 155 and a 25’ 858 154. Both are new with 70 miles on each so far this season. So far in comparing the 9R is wicked responsive in the bottom end. The 858 is a big sluggish, part of which was fixed by getting a better helix. The stock 858 clutching is terrible. I usually don’t mess with clutching until machines are well broken in, it I knew a 48 degree helix was not going give a very good back shift. Even with better clutching the 9R is still way more crisp and responsive low to mid, hopefully the new flash will help the 858. Both sleds are both dead even in a powder climb up hill. They are both raving out to about 8200 rpm. I’ll get the new 858 flash tomorrow and then go out and compare again.
So far I love the 858 chassis. Way better than the ascender alpha. I think I even feel it’s better than the 9R khaos

FWIW mine doens't make the tink tink noise at all... at least not yet. It's electric start if that matters.

Which clutch kit did you go with on the 858?

It’s been singled out to the spring from what hubs found in his fb video, looks to be to much slop in exhaust spring letting it rub against post.
Mines hasn’t been an issue and no sign of contact but my brothers sound the same as others. I have 6.3hrs and it’s running really well!!

I think that 48 is about 5-6* too much. I would run exactly what polaris runs. I don't see how the polaris and cat secondarys are much different. Similar design minus cat runs on a shaft vs hub. Helix diameter is also very similar.

Didn't guys run 43* angles on these at one time? I'd maybe try that out from a 25mph roll and see how it reacts. May need to play with secondary springs to get good response and shift out.

I know on flatlander trail sleds I've gone back to close to what polaris runs and now the sleds perform. The springs rates in the secondary are also measured different. So a 155/220 cat is actually stiffer than same spring in a polaris due to height at which its measured.

Of all the sleds that left the dealer. Holy crap.

They should of put a couple miles on that one before delivery with all the bad rumblings.

Nothing was learned from the exploding clutch affair

Looks like the exhaust valve is stuck in the cylinder. At min a new cylinder, or die grind the bad spot out.
I bet they change the engine, I bet they won't ship it for a month. Their warranty dept is not good from my experience. Took me a year to get clutches
A buddy snowchecked from the same dealer as Muskoka Matt and they broke his in on the stand to avoid fouling the plugs. They also reportedly ordered 3 motors right off the hop to have in stock for guys that had failures.

I think he was thinking that the metal rattling noise he was hearing the whole ride was the cause of the valve failure. Not so much the cable binding. From what I’ve read in regards to the rattling noise on other posts, it is most likely the brake disc or an exhaust spring rattling against the steering post, so good possibility it’s not related either.
that rattling noise in the vid 100% sounded like metal against the steering post.

Why was the tinking noise consistently occurring at 6k RPM if it was a spring rubbing on the steering post? Does not compute.

Unless that spring is made of gummy worms, I can't see how it could rub against a steering post that is at least an inch away.

If you are on facebook, go to the 'Catalyst Mountain Only Group' and watch the video Kevin Hubbard posted. I thought the same until seeing that video. It is wild/concerning how much that spring vibrates at higher RPMs and it's an identical sound. Amazed, would have never thought it would do that! It explains why a number of guys have broken springs, crazy!!!!

Sorry I'm not smart enough to post the video here.

it's called harmonics. the characteristics change at different frequencies (in this case rpms)

harmonics are an amazing phenomenon people often forget about. Hub's video really does it justice.

They are in and set up. Just haven't got to Bozeman. Ive had my daughter's for 2 months probably. Wayne only has yamaha.

The ping ping sound is 100% the y-pipe spring rubbing on the post. Mine did it for 2 rides then the spring broke, no more sound. Installed a better set of springs no issue since. This new chassis is the real deal.

Sometimes those tingy noises (harmonics) are lean spots. The 800 ctec does that a lot in the 3750-6k range at low speed.

Yeah that's why I'm not gonna touch mine; I'm gonna call the local Cat dealer on Monday and see if they'll fit me in for that and the ECU reflash. Hopefully so... I didn't buy the sled from them so we'll see what their attitude is.
And Rob what local cat dealer are you referring to? Cus the jerkwads in Carson city wouldn't do my Alpha recall " "decided to not work on sleds anymore " what I was told ?? Anything changed over their ?
Thanks Wes

Yeah, the one in Carson. When did they tell you this? That sucks if so.. only other dealer I know of is Winnemucca and I'm not driving that damn far.

Their website shows snowmobiles so they better work on them.

I checked my spring today and there’s definitely a rub mark in the paint on the steering shaft right where that spring is, pretty sure that’s what the sound is. I’m gonna change the spring out and move it. Good find guys.
