Prayers to the Families and Friends in Sparwood

This is a very sad and to hit a small town with this many deaths is going to have a big impact on the entire community. Thoughts and Prayers for the town of Sparwood.:(

We also have to remember as a group that this layer of instability will not go away this winter. It will allways be there!. My condolences to all the family and friends:brokenheart::rose:

Our Cali snow isnt very safe right now. Wetter snow with sun on top of a thick bottom layer of sugar.

Even the resorts are having probs.

i think i speak for everyone that is near to the sport, and those just watching the news when i say that my prayers go out to all the families of the victims. we are incredibally sorry for you losses.

I have been talking to other sledders since the accident in Fernie. There seems to be some confusion about how we as sledders behave towards the avalanch risk control people. Some seem to think that they overdo the avalanch risk and that when they say its high, really what it is is safe to ride, just be carefull. I challenge all of us to take the Avalanch Risk people very seriously this winter. If they say it is high in the area you were going to sled, don't be crazy and go anyway. Nobody belives it can happen to them or it can happen the way this last accident happened. Well, guess what it does and it did. To 11 experienced riders. Perhaps they could have made better decisions concerning where they were sledding, I don't know. One thing for sure is that it was very fast. To take out 8 men at once is extreme deadly and I for one will belive the avalanch risk every time this winter and sled accordingly.
Peace and hope for those who lost a father, husband, brother, uncle, son. I cry inside for all of you.

Hello all,
Our condolences to the families, friends, communities and all that will be affected by this huge tragedy. The ripple effect of this accident will be large.

Dear Zacs
Thankyou for that shameless bit of "self promotion". In the future could you please wait until we have had time to grieve for our friends and nieghbors before trying to make a profit.

Dear evrdnck/1m,
Thank you for expressing your concerns. I am sorry that you see my post in this way. I should have prefaced my post better. As in everyone's world right now, there seems to be so few minutes in the day.

I have been very selfless over the past 10 years, often putting the needs of other sledders ahead of my own family in my efforts to spread the knowledge and skills of avalanche safety.
I too have a husband that loves to sled and every time that he goes out (everytime that we go out) I hope that our riding group make the best decisions possible so that he/we will come home to our 2 daughters.

I am very passionate about what I do and I care deeply for the sledding community. I believe that anyone that has taken a course from us in the past could vouch for my compassion.
Please follow this link to view their words.

Yes, this is a very sad time, and the only reason for my post in this thread was that I was called by a Fernie sled shop on New Year's Eve with a request to accommodate some sledders local to Sparwood and Fernie in a custom course. That is what I am trying to accomplish.

Last season I received requests for avalanche training in the communities of 100 Mile House and Elkford immediately following the snowmobile avalanche accidents. The CAC, Amber and I did not have available time to respond immediately as our schedules had us elsewhere. When time opened up in our schedule 2 weeks later the contacts that had called us could no longer gather up enough people to run a class. Really unfortunate that no instructors were available when the interest was high.

True, training in any sport or business activity does not guarantee that accidents will not happen, however training offers riders a few more tools in their avy safety tool box to deal with whatever nature throws at them.
My intentions are honorable, please accept my apologies for upsetting you. Lori Z.

Obviously you have never done an avalanche course before, because if you have you would know that these instructors care more about life than making a "profit" as you suggested. There is not a lot of money in doing these courses but there is a lot of satifaction that comes with knowing that what you have done could potentially save lives, and for you to suggest that they are in the business to get rich, is just pure ignorance. I have personally taken the Zacs tracs avalanche couse and I know for a fact that they are unselfish individuals who desereve more respect than what you have given them.
