captain-sno;1116631May be hard to find a couple as the second group probably turned off their beacons or turned them to receive when they where helping find the first group.... [/QUOTE said:
Beacons should revert to sending automatically after about 5 minutes, at least mine does, for that very reason.

avalanche

thats horrible! My sincere condolences to all off the families. Try to make the best out of a new year. If anyone knows of a family fund benefit let me know.

I get shivers up my spine thinking about the situation. My condolences and thoughts are with the families.

I will be aware of my surroundings in the mountains and learn from the info that we get.

Terrible news...

A few of my friends in Crowsnest Pass are fairly close with those involved...
For any of you in the area, there is supposed to be a candle lighting at the big truck in Sparwood.

Hope the other's are found alive, but atleast they found the other 6.

when is the candle lighting going to happen, I am from lethbridge and would like to make the trip out

I believe the vigil was started at around 7?

Good on you for going out though... it's a bit of a trip from Calgary for me.

A guy that was interviewed on Global said it best;

"With these high powered machines these days.... they'll take you to the top of the work..... And that's where they are now."

All hope for the 8th.

"Harvey Pass" is where there sayin this occurred, is this a popular riding area, or is it a local only zone?

To my knowledge it is a well known area and becoming more popular. As a fellow sledder has mentioned it could have happened to any one of us during our enjoyable adventures. Such a large number of felllow sledders involved will difinitely bring negative attention to our sport.

My Mom visiting from Newfoundland compared it to the many tradgedies that have occurred in the waters off Newfoundland. It is a way of life for us mountain people that Winter lift our spirits and brings enjoyment and great pleasure with friends and family at an associated risk.

Now is a time to reflect on the the lives loss and to provide emotional and financial support to the families devestated from this huge loss.

I have no idea where to start, but I know the loss souls families should have the sledding community have a strong presence at memorial services and that we should form a finacial fund to assist the families, now and later.

If any sledders are grief cousellers or bankers I suggest we get together to provide emotional and financial support for familes.

This tragedy is a huge loss to a very small community of around 4000 people.

The loss of a love one lasts a lifetime and the support is required now and also down the road.

If anyone has any suggestions or is willing to help organize support, I am very willing to assist in the organization and implementation.

We need to start now. I will contact several sledders in the Cranbrook. Golden and Fernie Area to inquire if any plans are in the works.

If anybody is interested there is a public service at the church in sparwood tonight for the men who lost there lives in the avalanche i believe it starts at 7. Its public so i think it would be nice to go and show some support for the families and community of sparwood and sledder's all around that are grieving.

As a sledder for 25 years, its a dangerous game and its all about managing the risks. Even with the best, latest and greatest equipment mother nature still has the last call. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to all the families and towns people of Sparwood.
