Met up with friends at Bear this AM and they were talking about it. From what they said 5 guys were last seen at Wyo high co at three, were supposed to be at bear by 5 and didnt make. We came off the hill at 3 and met numerous search and rescue going up. Best of luck to all involved.

Conditions and Missing Rider Update 2.22.14

We got about 5" of snow overnight. This is on top of the foot and a half we received over the last 2 days. Wind appears calm.

The only news on the missing sledders is that SAR called us to ask what the weather was like here this morning. They are continuing their search. If you plan to come up today and want to assist SAR asks that you stop here or at he Burgess Lodges and tell them what areas you plan to look in. They don't want folks riding all over each other and confusing the situation. We will have a map posted in the Lodge and you can file your "flight plan" with us and we can let the command post of SAR know. We know that so many of you would want to help, but let's try to make it help and not jeopardize you, the searchers or the missing.

A major storm is moving in tomorrow and Monday. 12 - 18" are predicted and cold temps. We all hope this has a happy outcome long before that.

snow and rooms

We have a ton of snow and more on the way at Wyoming High Country Lodge in the Big Horns. People keep coming in with big, big smiles on their faces.

We still have some rooms available for March and a special price of $80 per person per night for 3 meals a day and a room.

A guest shared this picture with us that he took near the lodge. Yes, he is standing up. Yes, he is a full size adult.http://www.snowest.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=228083&stc=1&d=1393171609

lost snowmobilers

As most of you know, 5 snowmobilers were lost in the bush this past week. They were lost for two nights. Frankly, many of us were concerned that they were going to make it after that long in the cold.

The story on the snowmobilers is a simple one. Visibility was very bad the other day. They got turned around and headed South when they thought they were headed North. From their is just went downhill. Not enough fuel, no landmarks and no navigation. Not a fun time.

But, after Search and Rescue got some fuel to them, they were able to ride out and they are all healthy and in good spirits.

End result, they were found South of Hunt Mountain in the area of Horse Creek. This is SE of Bald Mountain and about 7 miles South of 14A.

Thank goodness they were OK. I don't think they would have faired well for another night.

These are experienced riders who are familiar with the area. A good lesson for all is to make sure that you know where you're heading and to not take any unnecessary chances.

I was in that area that afternoon. Have ridden it along time and when the vis went to 15 to 20 feet it would be easy to get turned around and some GPS don't work in snow storms or heavy timber. I have experimented with the spot in the bighorns works good in good weather poor in bad weather. There is no replacement for a good compass. Glad they are ok just goes to show that riding can go from fun to dangerous in a hurry.

Wish I would have known you were out there all week Jason, would have hooked up with you! Had a good week over at high country!
