2011/12 Big Horns North/South snow conditions

It was my bros sled, it just died and we couldnt get it going again. So we towed if for a ways, then got stuck and it was almost dark by then so we went back today and the track was frozen hardcore so we set the track on my tunnel and had the other guys pull us. Finally got back around dark, getting broke down with 2 people sucks!

most of the open slopes are very hard, and the valleys arent very deep. i lost an a arm in a creek bottom. i think the sled endoed?

Rode it saturday. It stinks...

There was a foot of new, but it was just dust-no moisture... and the rocks are now covered just enough to miss seeing. Stay on the roads if you go.

Ok I think we will just go to Bear probably then!!

Thanks,
Ryan

I know there has not been much snow since the first, but we are debating heading out to the horns over the weekend. Worth it if we stay at bear and head north???

The simplest explanation would be the north side as anything you can access off of Hwy 14 and 14a. The south is anything you can access off Hwy 16.

Not sure where you are coming from, but i plan on going up this weekend... Some snow forcasted today and tomorrow, but it should still make for a decent ride. I would ride south of bear, most people have said the best snow is there and i agree with where i rode last weekend.

And x2 on what wysteph and ryan said about the location of the northern bighorns... The north and south end is basically seperated by wilderness

hello all, i'm hoping somebody can throw me some advice I would like to ride the big horns but I dont know anybody that has gone there before. Were thinking of going the dec. 15-18. I've heard alot of people like to stay in Dayton at the bear lodge? Is this a place where you ride right from town. Pretty fun place to ride? Its ither there or cooke city but it sounds pretty iffy yet there... any help you can put my way thank you

Dayton is at the bottom of the Horns, and Bearlodge is up top at Burgess Junction, you can't ride from Dayton, and Yes you can ride from Bear.

Looking at Snotel sites it looks like the northern half of the horns have around 30" most places.

Do the northern horns have fewer stumps and boulders as compared to the snowies?
