Valdez hillclimb updates

Ouch!! 5 Hours!! Good luck on the race and post some pics when you return. I think we are headed to the Igloo this weekend.

The ride from ER would be about 5 hours to Thompson pass. We had a Avy benifit dinner last night with free beer (Keg donated by Moose's tooth):beer;
I tryed my best to get Doug & Johnny pickled so I would stand a chance today. Me & Doug have a grudge match....I figure I am just donating my money to a good cause:rolleyes:

Robert,

Please post up some results if you can.. :D I am interested in who wins the grudge match..

Nasty hill yesterday! They had to move the 1st course, which was to bad because it was going to be nasty. We trying hard just to put up the 1st tracks so the Jr's could have something to bite to. One of my buddies looked at it after I came down and said "That doesn't look bad" so I said try it. He did and got stuck on his 900 163 mod. Doug went up to help him and the ravine right next to him (20' away) tripped two slides taking out some of the gates. We had to move the track left then start. Kirk did great on his 1st time down here. Nick did great too taking one 2nd I think. I have to run against a supercharged Yam this morning then the 700 mod class...If I am still hanging on. I smashed my thumb hitting some of the ruts and had to use my palm on the throttle the rest of the way. Johnny Wichman was videoing me on that one and said he had to put in two tapes because I was so slow getting through the gates....at least I made it:rolleyes: All mod classes are today

Prayin4snow, you are getting internet service up there? That,s NOT fair, I even did not have any cell phone coverage....
I left on Sat afternoon, after my start rope broke for 2nd time in 12 hrs this afternoon I figured it's time to head home....especially with everything going on...
I hope you all have great time riding on Sun, I wish I was there but it just would not be smart to take off for a day trip with clutch-start option only.
Nice to meet more 4m members, and I hope to ride with ya as well, maybe even this season yet!:beer;

The good the bad & the ugly...
Day started Blue bird with a wicked new course. Fast, fun but unforgiving at the top. Great group of racers and a mini Forum meet telling lies around the fire pits (20+ Snowesters here)
The bad: Race officials seen some bad Avy conditions developing and shut down the race in the middle of the heats. 2 minutes later a recreation rider (a little ways away from the race) triggers, and is caught in an Avy. They didn't want us to mention anything until the family was notified, (which they were). The racers & spectators raced over to help within minutes.
The way the group pulled together to help someone was very humbling...Words can not express what went on there today...
Special thanks to the Valdez S&R unit, Valdez Avy team, city police & Troopers that were already on seen and directed everything and the Heli that flew him out.

Today was the main event Mod races that some racers prepare for all year. Not one racer complained about the race being shut down, instead the true nature of the sport came out because most of the racers donated their race winnings to the family & S&R team....
It is 3am and some of us wont sleep tonight...and unfortunately one of our fellow sledders will not come home tonight.
May God bless his family and give them peace our friend

Sad day for sure. May God bless the loved ones left behind. :rose:

Very dangerous avy conditions. We made a decision not to ride at all after observing the danger signs all around us. Better to live to ride another day than take the risk.

I was watching the race and enjoying the sunshine when it all happen. By the time I got to the hill, they were not letting anyone else dig. I was amazed at how many shovels were going to get him out. I can tell you that you are the people that I want on my side if this ever happened to me or anyone else. I now have a new outlook on riding the back country. I hardly got any sleep last night. He was camping next to us and I even said good morning and it was a good day to ride to him hours before the accident. His family is in my prayers. R.I.P. my friend.:ro

I just got home from Valdez, the weather was great all the way home. Had the chance to meet some new friendly snowesters.I also was able to watch my cousins 16 year old boy ride his *** off and do real well on friday and saturday( he made 22 runs up the hill on friday). Saturday morning started off with a great course so Doug was able to win the 700mod TROPHY class as an up and coming racer and will have to step up to the money classes in the years to come. The race was called just as we were lining up for the 800improved due to increased avalanche conditions. It was very humbling to see everyone racers, spectators, Valdez SAR, and various Valdez fire,law enforcement come together to help with the avalanche recovery. My deepest prayers go out to the family.

Robert,
I hear you are holding out on us reporting the results....A little birdie tells me you cheated and ran the trophy class.....and still didn't win...:eek::beer;:face-icon-small-dis

Didn't mean to hold out on our "Grudge match" results...Yes, other people signed up for it at the last minute for a trophy.... just to have Doug (now "Mr. Danger" to me:rolleyes:) kick all of our behinds on ....ahhhh....choke, cough...his pregnant wife's sled, combined that with the "kicked in the gut" feeling of what really mattered that day...we all lost yesterday....
