Update from Turpin Meadow Ranch & Togwotee CD Trail System

Hi,
We are located just 8 miles down the L Trail from Togwotee. Our lodge and restaurant is now open. We do ask for reservations for dinner. We have available cabins and Arctic Cat rentals. Give us a call at 800.743.2496. I will be updating daily the snow conditions and the avalanche alert level. Also, you are welcome to upload your favorite sledding memory (how stuck are you?).

Thanks and see you on the trail.

The General Avalanche Hazard is MODERATE. Two avalanche problems remain a concern: Pockets of soft, surface slab to eighteen inches deep could be triggered in wind-loaded starting zones. On Saturday, two skiers triggered such a slide. Both were caught, partially to completely buried, and sustained some injuries. Second, pockets of hard slab to 3 feet deep lie on old, faceted snow. More substantial triggers such as large groups, snowmobiles, or surface slides may be needed to initiate these slides.

Awesome Day

Dennis
Your place is great. Our group had a great time of the 1st weekend in December. I was very impressed with you accomodations, and the food was awesome. The atmoshphere was awesome, cabins great, and the proximity was fine. Great 8 mile trail to get to all the riding areas, and not so many people around. We'll be back for more! Nice to see great people in this industry that really know how to accomate sledders, much appreciated!

Scott

Thanks Scott. We are looking forward to your return visit. Have a great Christmas.

Dennis,

I know you just copy and paste the info, but how does total snow received since Oct. 1 decrease from 66" on 12-16 to 59" on 12-17? Just something I noticed as I follow this thread. Thanks for the postings. We will be in your area late Jan.

J,
That is a very good question. I usually look at snow depth and not total snowfall until the end of the season. I have sent an email to jhavalanche with the same question. I'll post the response when I receive it.

Update

The report is indicating 4" of new snow. To me it seems more than that. I know that there are some areas that got over 18" of new powder. We did not ride yesterday but we are riding today. So I will let you know what we find. But I'm expecting it to be awesome. Looking back, we are off to a great year...we are hoping that it keeps coming. Snow is in the forecast tomorrow and Sunday.

Please note the change in Avalanche Hazard to CONSIDERABLE.

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Strong southwest winds have formed new soft slabs up to two feet in depth. These slabs lie upon light density that fell earlier in the week and are likely to be easily triggered by humans who venture onto steep wind loaded slopes. These slabs could step down to deeper layers of weak faceted snow and crusts formed earlier in the season.

Expect sustained snowfall, heavy at times, accompanied by strong southwest winds as a strong Pacific storm system impacts the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 8 am to 11 am Christmas day.

Temperature Forecast for 8,000´-9,000´: Rising into the mid 20s.

Snowfall Expected Next 24 Hours: 6 to 8"

G E N E R A L - A V A L A N C H E - A D V I S O R Y
The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE, and will increase during the day as new snow and strong winds form soft slabs and add weight to existing weak layers. Two avalanche problems exist. First, backcountry travelers could trigger new soft slabs developing during the day to one foot in depth on steep, wind-loaded slopes. Second, deeper hard slabs, 2 to 5 feet in depth persist. More substantial triggers such as snowmobiles, large groups, or surface slides steeping down may be needed to initiate these hard slabs. Serious consequences could result if caught in one of these hard slab avalanches. Natural avalanche activity will become possible later in the day.

Merry Christmas....

The General Avalanche Hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Strong westerly winds and a few inches of new snow in the past 24 hours have added to slabs created by 10 inches of snow and wind from Saturday night. Slabs in excess of three feet in depth could be easily triggered on steep, lee slopes. Any surface slides have the potential to pull out deeper, old snow.

Have a safe New Year.
