Stupid Back

Good luck to you! Keep up the positive attitude. You've been dealing with this a long time, you'll be able to breathe a sigh of relief once they finally get you fixed! :)

Pimp, exactly what are they going to do to you? I had Disc Replacement done on the 1st of Dec of 06 and it was the best thing I ever did. I was taking 360mg of morphine a day and now i'm taking nothing at all.

Thanx catmt I guess with this type of surgery they aren't going to take out the whole disc just the bit that's stickin out. Basically they are just gonna port and polish my vertebrae and scrape some of the jelly bit out. Not even entirely sure how much recoup time I'm gonna need. I've heard anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. I guess they'll cover that tomorrow in my pre-op. Just got my dog fixed yesterday so her and I are gonna be laid up together. Out of all the people I've talked to (about 20 of them) that have had this surgery only 2 have had a negative experience. All the others are telling me it's the best thing they ever did.

thats crappy man ...I tell ya over the last couple o months every fricken bone in me has been hurtin .....I think that it has something to do with all those motocross wrecks years ago ......

I had this done in October of 05. Instantly felt better then I had in months, some lingering pain during healing for almost two years(nothing compared to pre-surgery). Today my back is better then it has been in 20 years, doing whatever I want. Riding, running, mountain biking. Listen to the PT and believe that you will get better.

So if they take the Jelly stuff out does it come ever come back??? If not how can you get by without it??/

Good luck. My discetomy in November gave me instant relief. I then over did something at the end of Janaury, and have some general pain again, but the numbness and pain is gone.

It's a big deal to keep up with exercises and stretching. I let up and wish I wouldn't have.

"Jelly stuff" does not grow back, nor do they take it out of the disc. They remove what has pushed out on the nerve route to relieve the pain/pressure on the nerve. The disc will heal(scar tissue) and seal off the herniation. At least this is my understanding. If you loose to much of the "jelly stuff" the disc is deflated and you then are probably looking at artificial disc or fusion. I was told that the scar tissue, if allowed to heal properly would be nearly as strong as the original outer disc tissue. Working so far:cool:

Oh I'm sure the GF will be naggin me to do all the physio stuff. Since she's in school for it now and works at the gym. Ya I hated to get all technical with the medical term "jelly stuff" but hey what else are you gonna call it?

What are you gonna call it....after a little research the jelly stuff is called nucleus pulposus. Lets stick with jelly stuff. As far as the PT goes, I had lots of questions and friends that were PTs. It was good to find out what I could do, what I should do and that some of the things I experienced post surgery were normal. I was a runner pre-surgery, my Doc said you shouldn't run. My pt said I was better off running and weighing 175 then not and weighing 225. Carrying extra weight would be harder on my back then a little running a few times a week. Plus it keeps the dogs happy.

I work as a firefighter so I had to be ready for the physical work. I had the surgery on October 9th and went back to work on December 2. I probably pushed it a little. I did not go to my first big structure fire until January and I was just fine. I started riding and snowboarding a little in late January. After the surgery I was told to walk as much as possible. About a block the first day but a few miles after two weeks. Was told not to run for six weeks, was probably 3-4 months before that was comfortable. I think my entire healing process probably took close to 2 years. But, I was feeling so much better when I woke from surgery. The first couple of months feeling better almost daily, then just days here and there that I would have some pain. Never as bad as pre-surgery, more in line with an annoying headache.

They keep movin this up on me. I was supposed to go in at 10am Monday morning. Just got a call that now they want me in there at 7:30am. Gonna wake me up out of a dead sleep, drag me across town, strip me nekkid and put me in bed. JUST TO KNOCK ME UNCONCIOUS!!! Seems a waste to me!:D

So I guess I'll have a quick shower and go get my back hacked open. Seems like a nice day to air out my spinal cord. For those that do, if you could remember me in your prayers that would help. Those that don't, a good thought can't hurt either. I'll let you all know how it went in a couple days.

Thanx for all the support

Mike

Good luck, dude. I'm probably a good canidate for back surgery (2 herniated disks in my lower back), but I'm just too stubborn to get fixed. Keep us posted.

Well that was 5 days of excruciating pain. Just got out of the hospital today. Operation while successful had some complications. Some tearing and I lost alot of blood. But now it's over.

Back into the hospital today. Moved wrong and slightly opened up the stiches at the bottom of the incision. . . . . Well let me tell you the mess that made, there was stuff everywhere. Luckily I was in the bathroom washing up. So down to emerg we go. Some kid was playin with his parents in the waiting room and they still took him before they would look at me. HELLO!!! STUFF IS LEAKING OUTTA MY BACK!!! "sit down and wait your turn, can't you see this boy has the sniffles?" Ahh free health care, long waits to see your family doctor (if you even have one). Just makes the Emergency room a Slight Inconvienience Room. Sorry just had to rant. Think I'm done for today.

Mike
