Loud sleds, we are our own worst enemies

Thank-you for your support

love my psi triple pipes with the stinger exauhst
nice and loud
The Enviro-nazis love you. It makes their job so much easier.
Maybe you should get a grant from them to buy a new sled and put straight pipes on it to ride in the wilderness.
That way you can all get stiffies.

Is there any wonder why we a losing ground?

Pretty frustrating. I (and I know others) try my best to be a good emisary for the sport, but it would seem that we are out numbered. B

Loud Sleds Save Lives

When im playing in the trees all my buddies can hear where i am if i were to get stuck and people can hear you earlier so they can get out of your way (cross country skiers).

Actually my loud pipes on the rmk have been put to a positive use twice that I remember...

I was on a tight twisty trail after dark... I came around a corner, I wasn't going fast, but a couple with there dog and kid heard me coming so they stepped off the trail, just incase I didn't see them.

Of course as soon as I saw them I pulled as far off the trailer as I could a little bit away from them and stopped.. it idles fairly quiet, the only reason I didn't turn it off was to give them some light from my headlight to get by me. A similar thing happened during the day and I actually turned off my sled.. and I wait for them to get a decent distance away from the back of the sled before I fire it up or take off.. so I don't spray them.

Around here it's not so much the noise as it is the attitude.. if you have a loud sled, but are considerate, aka go slowly out of a busy area or pull out of the way for non-motorized users, giving them right of way they seem to be happy.. where as if you have a quiet sled and force them off the trail.. then they get cranky.

If a sled is only ridden in the woods, and noone is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Think about it. That's some deep s#!t right there.

Well somebody has to be there to start/ride it :P So yes.

The answer to the tree version of that question is If a tree falles in the forest it still makes the vibrations our ears interpret as sound thus if nothing is around to make the intepretation.. then no.. no noise, but vibrations yes. :P

Very well put Mafesto and Jeff C.... It's to bad we have so many close minded arragont people...

As Mafesto said, "I'm ashamed to be a snowmobiler, when I know I am grouped in with you retards!"

The problem is alot of people don't get pipes or cans for what they are meant for, weight reduction and HP gains, they get them for loudness.... THen they have to show everyone within a 5 mile radius how "Cool" they are:confused::confused:

It flat out disgusts me that we are even having an argument like this. Some of the replies on the other post (Ollie Linked it), are just rediculous:mad::(.... Some of those guys make Forest Gump look like Einstein.:confused:

EXACTLY!
If it doesn't add any value other than loud, it serves no purpose.
If you feel the emotional need to stand out, wear a pink riding outfit with pretty frillies. Trust me, you will be noticed.

That is a good point. We don't need to get the enviro-nazis on our side or appease them, it is the forest service and the land managers that we need to appeal to. Showing that sledders are conscious of the audible impact on others should gain some respect (hopefully) from them.

I think the biggest problem we face is that most of the time they are one in the same. The same biologists/envrio-nazis who push for land closures and sound restrictions are the ones walking around in the green hats. We have no voice or say in land management. We need some legislature that creates a panel or board from both sides of the fence who decide democraticly the uses of the land. Put an end to the dictatorship we are all subject to presently. All of these sled groups (who I support unconditionaly) are battling new laws and closures as they are thrown in our face. We need to quit playing defense and get in on some offence. Maybe get in on the planning before it gets that far.

Not all that long ago you could ride dirt bikes and ATvs any where ever you wanted in Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray. Not now. The greenies made a fuss and now life has forever changed for the worse.
What you have to "gain" is not losing any more.
It is not due to my "allowing" it, it is due to too many riders with a "screw them" attitude.

That is an ongoing battle. Lake City is now going to allow ATVs and dirt bikes in town again. Tell me again how it is getting worse not better;) Silverton, Ouray and Telluride will follow eventually, well maybe not T-ride so soon, they are pretty obstinant but we will get Silverton back on board shortly. Ouray may have laws against such things but being a motel owner in that town I can tell you for certain that those rules are not very stricly enforced. You have to do something really stupid to get pinched.

There are some in the USFS with an adgenda, no bones about it. on the other hand, the real decision makers in both the Uncompahgre and San Juan forests have been working WITH us as of late. To the point of bringing us into the loop early on rather than too late. Its tough to get on offense. I propose we do so as well. Giving in to all the whining and crying doesn't work. Fighting back, standing our ground and being involved IS working, at least where I am.

OuraySledder,

While our philosophies & approach may differ, you definately are helping the cause!:beer;

I will quit arguing if everyone on here with loud pipes agrees to AT LEAST join a local snowmobile club. (better yet, join BRC or SAWS)

That's certainly easy enough, isn't it?

If that is the case I hope Montana can get to where you guys are at soon. Right now the "Aging Hippie Liberal Douche" population is in the process of taking over our state. All of our snowmobiling, dirt biking, fishing, and hunting rights are under fire at once.

quit whining about it. if you cant handle diversity, then stay in your home and watch re-runs. do you really think because you ride a quiet sled that it makes you a better rider? sounds like it to me. maybe you should trade in your sled for a touring bike and go hang out at the local star bucks, because you sound just like the greenies.

I love this. After decades of constant abuse, illegal closures, dirty tactics, and outright lies the greenies (AKA the forest service) gives us back a couple of bread crumbs and we are supposed to think that they are coming around.
Are we to believe they suddenly felt compelled to deal fairly and honestly? Most reversals are the work of hard work on the part of local clubs, national organizations like SAWS and BRC and the threat of legal action. Not some sense of fair play. And most definitly NOT the result of some acts of civil disobedience. Reversals of closures, are so rare as to hardly be worthy of mention. Every week in every state there are new areas under fire. The tactic is to wear us down on multiple fronts. When they do back down on some front, they just increase the pressure on another. Maybe it is TEMPORARILY getting better in YOUR neck of the woods but it is still all out war most every where else. Try riding the White Rim trail in MOAB without proper registration and insurance on your dirt bike. Hard to be farther out in the desert, BUT the odds are you will be stopped and ticketed. WHY? Because the Greenies whine louder, longer and with WAY more financial clout. The Clinton administration signed the biggest single federal land grab in U.S. history. And yet we are supposed to breath a collective sigh of relief because in your area "those rules are not strictly enforced"? Enforced or not they still exist!
Tell me again how this is getting better.

I replaced the 15 lb. battery with a 5 lb. one because it was an easy swap that saved some real weight. For the same reason, I took that ridiculous suitcase out of my sled and replaced it with a nice light, but louder can. I think there would be way less cans if the oem units weren't so large and heavy.

Diversity is riding with guys on XPs and Yamaha 4-strokes. Nothing to do with obnoxiously loud sleds. The attitude seems to be that a loud sled is somehow faster, more powerful and therefore superior to a quiet one. Show me some dyno proof that a loud sled is substantially more powerful.
