Loud sleds, we are our own worst enemies

quit whining about it. if you cant handle diversity, then stay in your home and watch re-runs. do you really think because you ride a quiet sled that it makes you a better rider? sounds like it to me. maybe you should trade in your sled for a touring bike and go hang out at the local star bucks, because you sound just like the greenies.

Diversity??
What does "I run the loudest pipes I can get just so I can think I am Cool" have to do with diversity??

Define, quiet sled?

I don't have a problem with pipes that DO SOMETHING.
Does it make the sled run better?
Does it give the sled more HP?

Loud, for the sake of loud is just obnoxious. If you think the noise thing is just a bunch of old people whining, as has been stated, look at smoking.

20 years ago you could smoke everywhere. People sat back and laughed when they were told it is going to be banned. They laughed when they were told to be polite. Now there are places that are trying to make it illigal to smoke in your homes. So if you think that loud for the sake of loud is your right. You can sit back and watch your rights go away.

oh and loud doesn't make you a better rider either. It just makes you the focus of laughter.
How many forest service meetings have you gone to trying to save a riding area?

Do you belong to any riding clubs?
Do you belong to BRC?
What have you done to try and save riding areas?
Are you even familiar with what is really going on?

You can sit back and cry about it's your right and such, but I hate to break it to ya. Politicians don't care about what you want. If they did, we wouldn't have any wilderness areas. The whole, won't happen here or I will ride anyway arguement really doesn't matter. Politicians don't care.

Well somebody has to be there to start/ride it :P So yes.

The answer to the tree version of that question is If a tree falles in the forest it still makes the vibrations our ears interpret as sound thus if nothing is around to make the intepretation.. then no.. no noise, but vibrations yes. :P
Actually sound, light, heat, etc are descripters of physical phenomenons that exist whether they are perceived or not.
Using your logic the light from the far side of the sun does not exist because we can't see it.

Diversity is riding with guys on XPs and Yamaha 4-strokes. Nothing to do with obnoxiously loud sleds. The attitude seems to be that a loud sled is somehow faster, more powerful and therefore superior to a quiet one. Show me some dyno proof that a loud sled is substantially more powerful.

go look at a factory mod verses a stock 600. they dont put pipes on them to make them sound cool. all i am trying to say is people just need to back off each other and quit telling others that what they like is wrong. i see things every day that i may think are dumb but it may be the coolest thing to that person or whatever the reason is, its their reason. you dont see people with pipes bashing people without pipes. so quit making fun of people and people will quit taking stabs back at you

I replaced the 15 lb. battery with a 5 lb. one because it was an easy swap that saved some real weight. For the same reason, I took that ridiculous suitcase out of my sled and replaced it with a nice light, but louder can. I think there would be way less cans if the oem units weren't so large and heavy.

"louder" isn't the problem.
You can get an aftermarket can that will shave the same weight and not be much lounder than stock. There are more and more makers of aftermarket pipes and cans that are activily working on making their products sound as close to stock as possible.

The problem starts when weight, hp and performance aren't what you are looking for.

I love this. After decades of constant abuse, illegal closures, dirty tactics, and outright lies the greenies (AKA the forest service) gives us back a couple of bread crumbs and we are supposed to think that they are coming around.
Are we to believe they suddenly felt compelled to deal fairly and honestly? Most reversals are the work of hard work on the part of local clubs, national organizations like SAWS and BRC and the threat of legal action. Not some sense of fair play. And most definitly NOT the result of some acts of civil disobedience. Reversals of closures, are so rare as to hardly be worthy of mention. Every week in every state there are new areas under fire. The tactic is to wear us down on multiple fronts. When they do back down on some front, they just increase the pressure on another. Maybe it is TEMPORARILY getting better in YOUR neck of the woods but it is still all out war most every where else. Try riding the White Rim trail in MOAB without proper registration and insurance on your dirt bike. Hard to be farther out in the desert, BUT the odds are you will be stopped and ticketed. WHY? Because the Greenies whine louder, longer and with WAY more financial clout. The Clinton administration signed the biggest single federal land grab in U.S. history. And yet we are supposed to breath a collective sigh of relief because in your area "those rules are not strictly enforced"? Enforced or not they still exist!
Tell me again how this is getting better.

Your defeatist attitude is really offensive. Heaven forbid I contradict it with some progress. The point is, it can be done. Get off your dead a$$ and help us instead of preaching this negative BS. Getting ATV's back into Lake City did take work, no threats, just work. The county and city governments made the decision. Not allowing unlicensed motorized vehicles in town had nothing to do with the USFS. The same is true in Silverton, it is the county level government we are working with. There is definately an aging hippie population fighting it but common sense and commerce WILL win out. One little battle at a time is OK with me. If fixing it all in one fell swoop is your goal, yep, we're screwed. As a business owner in Ouray I also lobby there and try to get other business owners involved. It helps these little tourist towns survive. It takes time and common sense talk but it isn't too difficult to see who spends the money in these towns. The guys with Jeeps, ATV's and dirtbikes keep them alive. That requires tolerance and common sense rules.

I am just really frustrated by your idea of what will work. Reminds me of minorities voting democrat. They promise to fix it with the same old tactics. Never works, most of those promised fixes never get them. You seem to want to follow old school "take away the argument" concessions. History shows it doesn't work. I have demonstrated, with tangible results, a positive movement using a different method and you want to balk. PLEASE stay in Steamboat, I don't get up that way. Heaven forbid we mention getting something back, or honestly discuss how we got there. Stick your head back in the snow dude, your attitude disgusts me.

No one is saying don't put a pipe or can on your sled. I've got an HPS on mine. The problem is that too many morons want "the loudest can for a D8"..etc. Not for peak HP gains, just for the sound. Piping a race sled is one thing, straight pipes on your day sled is quite another.
As far as many of us are concerned, idiots with very loud sleds are just as much a threat to our sport as the enviro-nazis. I won't back off on either.

There is no simple, single fix that will open public land back up to the public, but I can tell you one thing that won't work. Doing nothing.

OuraySledder is right. Everyone needs to get involved. Join local and regional clubs and orginizations. Go to the meetings, make the phone calls.

My point that I was trying to make is actually pretty simple.
If you want people to respect you and your rights, you need to show a little respect. Sound levels are something we can do something about. I won't quit riding, but if I need to ride a quiter sled to take one of the greenies primary weapons away, I will do it.

This is and has been one of the most fought about issues we have.
As long as the FS and the enviro-zealots use it against us, it isn't going away.

so what is it you are wanting to hear . it seems like anything anyone says you shoot down. what do you want out of this?

What got me going on this whole thing (wow did this whole thing explode), was simple.

The question was asked. What is the loudest can for my sled?
Not, what's the best can?
Not, what is the lightest can?
It was what is the loudest can.

Loud for the sake of loud was what set me off.

It has nothing to do with thinking it is dumb, it's about annoying/irritating others. Like it or not, EVERY single person is a part of the Public. Bottom line, the majority of folks in every walk of life don't like excessive noise.

Ouray - Steamboat,

Hey Guys, step back, take a deep breath and please do me a favor..........

Join me in picturing Ollie in a bright pink one piece riding suit. Maybe with pink fur around the hood! (sipping a Diet Dr. Pepper)

Come on now, no matter how puckered up you've gotten with each other, that picture is damn funny!

When you have both calmed down, consider this. It's ok for both of you to believe in a cause. (which you both obviously do) and it's also ok for you to disagree on the best way to fix what's wrong with the cause. (which you both obviously do)

The important thing here is working on the problem. So many people on here are just riding and saying screw it, someone else can fight my battles. Some of us do best to fight in a constructive method, some of us are best at being a good example to riders and non-riders, some are best at trying to band riders together, some are great at getting info out to the masses, some are best at knocking sense into idiots.

If those of you on this thread didn't care about the sport you would be like the bomb throwers "I like my loud pipes - F off" and then would be gone, instead of passionately explaining your beliefs.

So, I salute you, and thank you for your efforts, and bid you a good evening. I'm going to go try NOT to dream about a pink furry Ollie !!

Peace, Bagger

That is just a nasty picture.
6' 2" pink bunny. You have a better chance of making em sick than makin em laugh.
Did see a guy come waking into albany lodge wearing a pink Tu-tu once.
Asked him if he lost a bet. He didn't answer.

its about telling others how to live. a person who rides with pipes can still be respectful of others. i dont ride it at night if i have to go around others (like at a gas station) i pick the shortest route so i dont have to make excessive noise. and i wasnt talking about loud sleds being dumb i was talking about opinions being annoying/irritating to others.

I can see you are a real ambassador for the sport. I hope all your HARD work was a little more articulate that this tripe. Over the past 30 years I have hundreds of hours spent in meetings with federal, state and local agencies, clubs and dozens more working on S&R.
If I was a defeatist I would have quit the fight 20 years ago. You tout some small measure of acquiescense by one town and hold it up as a beacon for positive change. A true change would be the removal of the laws, not the lax enforcement. BIG DEAL. Forgive me for being less than awestruck. They can just as easily change their minds with the next election. If it was all about money they would be logging and strip mining your area until it looked like Leadville.
Better read your history books again. The removal of any VALID argument has reversed many laws. The Federal government does not give a hoot about revenues from ATVs and Dirt Bikers.
I am one of those aging hippies and I can tell you it is not us that are the problems. It is the idealistic teens and young adults that want to "save the planet" that will be the end of us. If we all don't band together and work in a constructive manner to preserve what we have.
Sorry to dissapoint you but I spend a fair amount of time riding in your area every year. I have for over twenty years. But feel free to steer clear of Steamboat if that makes you feel better.

i guess you are holier than thou. i am not saying that loud for the sake of being loud isnt bothersome, this is stupid and pointless and i am not sure why i am even trying to see both sides of it . all i know is that people with such opinions that have been stated held people decide to get the loudest pipe/can they can find to feel like they get back at people like those of you taking stabs at people for riding a loud sled . your post is not going to save the world in fact i think it sets things back and drives a stake between people who should band together for the sport they love . its too bad

Not everyone with a loud sled is an idiot. There are many people with loud sleds that are courteous to other users. It is the posers that race back and forth in the parking areas, blast up busy trails at Mach 2 and generally piss-off everyone within earshot. Guys that can't let their skills speak for them.
I still think a yamaha triple with pipes is a sweet sound, but not at full throttle at the trailhead.
If I had a buck for every time I inadvertantly upset someone I could buy my new Dragon and pipe it.
