Loud sleds, we are our own worst enemies

I have a 03 ProX with I think stock exhaust and I have a 97 Rmk with SLP twins.. Both 700's.. the SLP are friggin Loud... sound good, but loud...

One neighbour sais her windows rattle when I fire it up...

I try to put away from home as slow as possible, so I don't annoy too many people... but It's kinda nice that when I get out on the local trails the wife can stick her head out the window and tell where I am.

I'm riding the pro X more and more, not becuase it's quiet, but cause it's more fun.

And due to noise, I'm kinda glad I took the ProX instead of the Rmk on the rally today.

Frankly.. I could careless about the noise.. when I'm out having fun I barely notice it...

I love my loud can on my 800 rev, and i love my loud true dual exhaust on my 6.0 gmc, I especially love pissing people off with them too haha.

Twins dont have to be loud.... unless the owner has to have them loud.

It's possible decrease the sound pressure levels of twins without having them bark at you.

Some areas need quiet sleds.... especially around non sledders... other areas, it would be OK if you sled was powered by a German buzz-bomb.

I should add my RMK came with the pipes on it... no can either.. just pipes into mini can's like 3" in diameter and maybe 4" long.. then dumps out the bottom of the sled.

I just haven't done anything about it...

Wow, I remember just a few years ago this site was great for getting info, help and other good things, now its turning into a serious waste of my time.

Heres a thought, WTF happened to using, wait for it, hold on... SKILL? You know, using your own abilities to get you around rather than gaining 1.5hp and losing 10lbs from a chunk of metal. I dunno about you guys, but I like a challenge when I ride, makes it more fun for me and I find I improve every time I go out. The sleds of today really only need some clutching and suspension tweaks and they'll take a person damn near anywhere. I'll admit, I bought into the whole lighweight can deal and quite honestly, I can't tell a fuggin' difference on my sled other than its got a different exhaust note. I bought an SLP because they claim its fairly quiet and it is for the most part. Looking back on it, I should've saved my money and used it for gas and oil.

As far as the "young whippersnapper" type comments go. I'm 18, and I do take a slight offense to that. Try and realize that not all of us run around with our head up our a$$ and act like we know everything.

Rant over, this place has got more ups and downs than a new brides panties...

Heh ya.. I kinda agree.. I really don't think I would notice anything if I shaved evern 50lbs off my sled... if I shaved 100lbs off me and 50lbs off my sled... maybe :P But I do some hills, mostly trails, bush, river running.... I kept my SLPs due to advise from here when a local mechanic was telling me I should go to a stock exhaust with a BRP can....

I like the sound of a loud exhaust on anything piston powered too.

I don't like giving people who don't like the sound of a loud exhaust reason to galvanize a movement against me and my winter powersport.

Who has more rights, the sledder or the skier? The sledder or the hiker? Sledder 1 or sledder 2?

Well, like they said in Animal Farm, All animals are created equal, some are more equal than others. Those animials have better lawyers... and better lobbies... and more money...

I understand the "nobody is going to tell ME what to do!" perspective

But

Look at it this way if you can...

You and your buddies are sitiing in your home, whatching that new Panasonic 52" flatscreen with the Superbowl on..

Your nextdoor neighbor is a fan of street racing... he has a killer 700 HP Turbo Supra with a 5" open exhast and decides to start "tuning" his ride from kickoff thru the end of the 3rd quarter...

Are you going to go ask him to keep it quiet or just let him drown out the game with the brap of his sweet ride? What does that make you think of all of the lowered "tuner cars" out there?

Does that mean he should not be able to run his Supra? Probably not... but not if it ruins your Superbowl game or a dinner with your family, maybe he should be a bit more carfull about ruining your day.

Some turbo sleds out there I've seen have a silencer between the turbine and the outlet. I've seen some quiet twin pipe setups out there too....

Think about that barker can before you go ripping around others....sledders and hippies alike.... is my only point

Maybe someone in Colorado who has better knowledge can verify this but wasn't there a section of Vail Pass that was closed to sleds because the people on the chair lift in the Blue Sky Basin of the Vail ski area could hear them and complained to the right people.

i didn't know that noise hurt the environment.

Maybe i don't like the swish swish sound of cross country skis

Maybe i don't like the sound of a chainsaw cutting down trees for a ski run

Maybe i don't like the sound of a D8 cat clearing ground for a ski lodge

Maybe I don't like the sound of 300 cars idling in a ski hill parking lot

Maybe I don't like the sound of my neighbors lawnmower

But it doesn't matter, all sleds do is kill all living things in thier path according to the greenies. So my loud sled when i'm 70 miles from the nearest living person is really hurting a lot

I'm pretty sure everything I've hit with my sled i've killed.. cept myself :P and the grass covered by snow.. but umm yeah.. maybe I should stop running over things...

Who cares how loud my sled is, if you don't like it, don't ride with me. Personally I bought my mbrp race can to drop weight, the race can specifically because it sounds wicked. Yeah, it's loud. Deal with it.

Wow some of you guys sure seem strongly about the loud pipes situation.Im my opinion
to each is own I really dont think that this is an issue in the back country as much as its in a resedential area.

Where the hell do you ride? Cooke City is being targeted as is Beartooth Pass because greenies are claiming loud sleds disturb pregnant grizzlies in their dens.

"MBRP is always nice and loud on the poos. Sno stuff is pretty loud too. Gotta love loud pipes and listening to all the trail hoppers whine about the noise " waaah youll close our groomed trail, wahhh, seriously..STFU Cans are about weight loss and sound. If you buy a can to add real hp youre an idiot.

If you guys want quiet, get a set of cross country skis.

On edit...that was a funny fing video, sled sounds great...love the narrator, hahahahaaa!!"

idiot post of the year nomination....

I ride every were and all I know for sure is that I will mod my sled the way I want to ride it.Loud or quiet it doesnt matter somebody some were will find something to bich about our machines. So why dont we all start riding our sleds this weekend and tell stories about that instead of crysacking about what loud pipes everybody might have on there sleds. And as far as the guy giving the example about the supra give me a brake. Most of our crew was riding super bowl sunday and dont think I have ever seen a guy that mods his sled sit and rock the throttle for 3 hours long.Come on people lets get our feet back on the snow and dump this soap opera POST.

All I Can Say Is ..."wow"!!!!!

I've read through many of the posts on here, and it amazes me how ignorant many of you really are!

There is absolutely no doubt that excessively loud sleds hurt all of us as a group.
Yet, so many of you are so selfish that you are willing to allow us as a group to be weakened, just so you can listen to your own "braaap, braap, braaap".

You folks are the poster children for the stereotype of arrogant, selfish less than intelligent snowmobilers.

There is certainly a difference between the guy who puts on a mild can & sneeks away from the lodge & you dolts who gotta make sure everyone within 2 miles is aware that you are now riding your sled!
"Blah, blah, blah, I'll make as much noise as I want to, blah, blah, blah."
What are you.... like 5 years old?

I sat here trying to type this in a non-offensive manner, & decided, SCREW IT!
If this offends you then GOOD! YOU are the problem!
I am ashamed to be a snowmobiler when I know I am grouped in with you retards!

The industry could invent a electric snowmobile that levitated across the snow and the enviromentalists would still want to shut it down. It has nothing to do with the environment. The greenies are just greedy and unwilling to share.

It just takes one person to screw it up for everyone else. Yes I like the sound of the piped/canned sleds. I am almost 60 but the one stupid idiot in the parking lot and he is there, is going to cost us all a lot of riding areas in the future. When they crack down which is going to happen if we do not organize and police ourselves, we will all be riding 4 stroke quiet sleds, on trails with guides to supervise us if we ride at all. Yes, I have seen the sport evolve greatly over my 45 years of riding sleds and the hand writing is on the wall.....read it!!!!!!

I currently own both 2 stroke and 4 stroke sleds and each has it's place. When around others you need to squeak like a mouse and if nobody is around you can roar like a lion but don't get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time as it is going to cost us all in the end.
