Loud sleds, we are our own worst enemies

Here's my take on it. I ride mostly at Priest Lake Idaho. We have been fighting for years to keep the area open due to the Caribou. It looks like we may have 1 more year of riding the north end of the lake. Some may argue that is some of the best riding in the country. They monitor us up their non stop. Helicopters, planes whatever. Why give these idiots more of a reason. Loud crap was cool in the 98-2000 mod days but no more. One of our major trail heads at Priest is at the end of an airfield. When we take off in the morning to head to the hills guess what, theres 10 loud sleds doing speed runs up the strip. Same type of guys every time. I'll stop now cause I can go on for days. Any respectable backcontry rider knows the type I'm talking about.

Face it. Dumb people will ALWAYS be around. Whenever a guy is STUPID enough to type something like, and I quote AkREV151: 'Have you even thought, for just one second, that half these guys run loud sleds just to piss off anal pricks like yourself? '

Somebody needs a new attitude, and need to grow the F¤)¤)CK up....

Here is what I posted on that thread:

Yellowstone to Yukon

Snowlands Online form to fill out if snowmobiles detracted from someone's experience.
Report excessive noise, impacts to wildlife, damage to public property, safety concerns or motorized trespass into areas designated as Wilderness or closed to motorized vehicles. If your recreation experience was adversely impacted, that is “user conflict.” You need not be run over! You need not have even seen a snowmobile. Damage to Nordic-trails or finding snowmobile tracks in the Wilderness can be conflict.

Winter Wildlands These folks have some big money behind them, and are all about "solitude". Coming soon to a place near you (if they aren't already there)

I could post lots more, but what's the point. Some of you won't get it until your favorite riding area is under attack.

And I agree with Ollie......Loud Sucks! I LMAO every time I hear someone with an annoyingly loud sled. Makes me think that they want it loud so people will think they are big and bad (Poser), when in reality, the noise is just that, noise. Loud doesn't make you a better rider, nor make anyone think you are a good rider. Let your riding speak for itself.

When you annoy other snowmobilers with your LOUD sled, let alone other outdoor recreationists, maybe you should really think about it.

thinking about it, this is just like the loudest guy at the bar. He's the one that yells and scream the most, nobody likes him, he get's beat up, don't know shiet about sex, has a small wiener (but always yells about how big it is).

Probably the same guy that needs the loudest sled to make up for...well..you know... :beer;:D

Like that retard with that AC up there a few weeks ago, Napoleon syndrome plays that card has to have the loudest sled to make up for the little winkie. Plus he was the high mark on A cup hill. And he felt bad as we laughed because he tried to walk up the glides on his ramp and almost ate the side of his trailer.

Do you think if we could get some of that harmonic exhaust to play Bob Marley or that dead guy, pun intended the greenies would like us more?

i rode my a friends king kat one day, It was so freakin loud i had a headache all day. I run SLP only on my stuff

Montana has the 96 decibel law now

Wow you are such a hypocrite. Vids never do any justice, but anyway that was not a skill video. I was just being helpful in showing that I think the hps is too loud. Lets see some of your vids.

Somebody get me a bigger stick. I am having trouble reaching this beehive:D

Yes, I have a Yoshi and it is louder than stock. However, that is not the reason I chose it and I did not actively go searching for the loudest product I could find or create a video to show how loud it was. I have several videos for your viewing at adultfriendfinder.com:rolleyes:

I wish people would use their brains about this subject...

I wish people wouldn't take the right to sled on public lands for granted and realize that we as outdoor enthusiasts are under a microscope from people who think we don't need to be able to access our public lands the way we see fit.

I think as far as super-loud pipes are concerned, it's a matter of being considerate. Face it, you get 4 or 5 sleds in a group even just cruising along it's gonna be loud enough as it is, and while I pretty much can't stand the hippies *****ing about this, I do see a point in the loathing of super loud pipes on sleds ...

I just wish people would wake up and realize that stuff likes this is what gets areas shut off to us.

Catwomen.
As you can see from the responces by the childeren, they are totally clueless and don't care. They have the IQ of a 5 year old and the riding ability to match, unfortunetly, they have an ego the size of texas. That is why they need the "look at me" exhaust.

Am I the only one that thinks this site is turning into amsnow.

I doesn't have to be loud to sound good. There are numerous companies doing there part to help the sport. Although louder than stock, SLP and Skinz silencers are certainly quieter than alot I've heard. I just love the skinz ultra Q between 55-6500 rpm constant throttle. So quiet it only sounds like a fan. I don't know anyone in our group that likes loud. If its annoying to the rider, it has to be annoying to those around you.
In the middle of the forest or not, you can be heard. The sound of a loud pipe can carry over a vast area. What if your riding area boarders a ski area? I'm pretty sure they don't want to hear your sled over the next ridge.
There was a kid in our store last night bragging how loud his dirtbike is. All I could think was "jees, what an idiot". Then they wonder why they have to drive an hour and a half to get anywhere to ride???

Couldn't agree more Ollie...... I remember back in the day when you could actually get usefull info about mods, gain HP, reduce weight while maintaining integrity, ect..... Now, it's what is the loudest chit out there... My balls are bigger than urs, blah blah blah...... I am starting to understand why other sites are popping up and being selective on who they let in......

I've never been to amsnow, but this is the trend on every site I belong to other then a very select few that are very discriminating about their user base. Not to mention the mods on those few sites act swiftly and with an iron fist once something has been deemed to violate the rules.

As far as the noise goes, I sometimes feel that my SLP pipe/can combo on the 660 is too loud. You've heard it for yourself Ollie, what is your opinion on it?

I have a race pipe on my XR650R dirtbike, but it was built as a race bike with racing in mind. Now that racing will probably never happen I'm trying to find a quiet insert for said race pipe.

And on the Harley note:

Harley Davidson, the most effecient way to turn gasoline into noise without the benefit of horsepower.

How many people here used to put baseball cards on their bikes to make it sound cool? How have attempted to put so many on that you can hardly pedal? And how many people like the sound a race car or a mod sled makes? Granted a race track is one thing but maybe some people need to go through a buy the loud can and then realise it's not all it's cracked up to be and their next sled they go back to a quiet can. And some people stay with the loud pipe for racing. I don't know how many people would look at me and my cousin for his loud pipes on his race sleds and scoff the pipes even with the sponsor stickers on the sled. But when we'd pull off some side area and start climbing through the trees practicing for course runs then they could see why we would get every scrap of hp out of them for the improved and mod class when a tenth of a second seperates 1st to 15th place finishes. We were in the black hills once and a guy from MN and his group stopped over as we pulled up for a rest and asked us why we need to have such loud pipes blah blah blah. Despite the Tri City, Ford and amsoil and # stickers on the sled. Cousin fired his up and took off up through a steep hillside covered with trees that looked like you could barly walk up let alone get a sled up it. Wasn't a straight shot neither having to weave up and over logs and cut around trees. I heard the guy curse in amazement and then he understood after I explained that all 3 sleds in our group were his race sleds. Then he understood after talking to him for awhile. Granted some people are out there wanting nothing more than the faste cc sled they can build and hats off to them too. It's what makes our sport, Just might want to keep those loud sleds tucked away at night if riding near houses is all.

loud sleds are not for everyone!!

You have to admit it appeals to some but not all. I would rather sound stock, but you just can't get the performance (depends on sled) that the aftermarket co's can deliver. I myself have a NPP pipe w/ can LOUD!! On an M-7 , I was suprised by the db's. I know it is annoying. I wear ear plugs. what does that tell ya.

I have a 3 year old who now is stuck on her Kitty Cat!! My buddies make me ride in back. also because of the A-20. You do have the younger gen that thinks loud is fast. put a can on and you can automatically out run your buddy. The aftermarket industry see's an great money maker there. Can't blame em.

Until we get the perfomance and weight to match, it seems we are stuck with loud or stock. I have been around HPS, Thing (stealth) and they both do a decent job on select sleds, but not on mine. Soon it will all come around, just look at they old days when the stinger came right out of the hood.

Be patient. And for the annoying one's be curtious...
