Yea and it was raining at the cabin today. Plowed all damn day. Just got done. Snowed most of the night but only about an inch or two made me redo what plowing I did yesterday. The plow drifts are getting bigger. They won't move once it freezes because it thawed pretty good today.

Rode Huckleberry to the Whitetail on Saturday and about 2 feet of snow on the trail above the trail trench. One guy in our group rode from the top of Huckleberry into the small parks and he said the snow was 3 to 4 feet with no base. Rode on the lake and marked it up but that was all we dared to do off the trail.

Groomer did not do Huckleberry Saturday as expected. I hear it went down Sucker Creek towards Copper but did not do Big Mtn yesterday. Some folks rode Martin's area yesterday and it is heavily drifted.

Rained yesterday for several hours and snowing this morning. Things should start to set up. Riding near Whitetail and Monture Creek tomorrow.

A guy called me from Seeley and lots of sledders out on the West side where he lives. Rained all day there yesterday and snowing this morning.

Lincoln update Saturday Dec 27th 08 parked in copper camp bottom you can see grass in the parking lot, and i know they plow it. Only like 16 inches on bottome nothing like snotel says. only us in the parking lot at like 10 am thought that was funny but who knows. Road was great no one on it. dont dare get off the road though, no base. Got to the end of the road to start the climb up to the bowls, and forgetit it is way to wind blown to even think of it, and not even close to enuff snow , so we played on the road for the rest of the day. it was still better than sittin at home. THe wind blew hard all day and was pushing the snow around like crazy. Snotel claimed 53 inches up top at copper top but im thinking there might be like 36 or so. well that is the facts but we still had a great day.

The wife and daughter are in seeley right now , like everywhere else there is no base but the trails are fine , they did get off trail a little yesterday for a bit . It's been snowing there Since X-mas morning when they got there.

Went to Westside yesterday and was about to unload when a group came down, they couldn't even see on the trail the rain was coming down so hard, it was raining as high up as they went which they said was about 15 miles or so. They reported lots of snow and tough going with the heavy layer on top the rain created. Temperature was 36, just a few degrees cooler and the rain would have been some serious snow.... started to turn back to snow on the other side of lincoln. Raining at Copper parking lot too, snow in lot was mashed potatoes. Hopefully this will settle the snow down a little. Forcast is calling for another foot tonight.

Riding n Lincoln

Well, conditions in Lincoln IMHO have been wonderful! Here is what we did the past weekend:

Sunday - Keep Cool Lakes and Martins Mountain, about 1.5 to 2 feet powder on the lakes. Martins was 2 feet of fluffy sticky powder all over the place. It was a "sleet" when got home around 230 and was wet but temp was right about freezing and snow level was dropping.

Saturday - Huckleberry - 2 feet powder on Resevoir Lake and piles all over the place heading up to the pass

Friday - Big Mountain - 1.5 feet powder and lots of trees down, can get around them all which makes it fun but groomer is going to have to work to clean them up

On way back up today for the new years and first part of Jan, talked to few folks this morn and said it was snowing and snowed about three more inches last night.

Question

I am a newbie so this might sound stupid you you guys, but with the warm weather and RAIN, will that create a base or create an ice layer and make snow conditions dangerous like most of the rest of the state is experiencing?

Man, with conditions throughout the state right now, I am just fine staying around helena and riding the trails/roads. Unfortunatly I wont be fine with that for long.

I think you are right. I don't know a lot about this either but, think about it. Lots of powder, ice layer, more powder, steep slope and she lets go. A guy in Seeley told me today the talk about avalanches is going around Missoula and Seeley.
Don't be afraid of Lincoln. Lots of miles of great trail riding and areas where you can climb a little and get stuck f you so desire. You don't have to ride steep, potentially dangerous stuff to have a great time with friends. Come on up!!

conditions....

that is true, if you get lots of snow then it settles and snows then rains then snows like it has been it could be a avalanche condition. if it settles right the condition lessons but avalanches can happen at any time. like jim says, there are 200 plus miles of trails and roads so unless you have to be a highmarker and take a few stumps with ya right now there are tons of miles of trails to ride in lincoln area.

Riding in Lincoln

Where are some other areas to ride in Lincoln except Copper Creek? We ride the bowls but are looking for other areas to take less experienced riders and see some new country. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks and good riding to all.

We ride a lot of areas: Dalton Mountain, Huckleberry, Big Mountain off of Sucker Creek Road, McDonald Meadows, Stonewall Mtn and Martin's mtn area. There are about 240 miles of groomed trails around Lincoln. We have one of the best clubhouses in the state. It is about 2 miles North of Lincoln on Sucker Creek road. Usually open on weekends and we have maps of the area and people can offer lots of advice based on rider ability. PM me if you want my email or phone #. I am retired and around here most of the time. Not an expert rider for sure but ride a lot of miles with some great friends every year. We ride 30 to 50 miles in a day and see some great scenery and just plain have fun. My friends have been riding here for over 30 years so they know the area well.

Thanks again on the updates cabindwlr!

I was up there for Christmas and it didn't look to promising. I'll hang out in Bozeman for awhile before I make it that direction.

Keep up the good work. Even if I don't post, I check your updates frequently.

My cousin from Texas showed up today. Went down plowed his place some. Wind and snow temps like 30 so hard to plow. Went over to Buddy's place for Spaghetti dinner. The snow pack here is going to be great once everything settles. Probably the best snow I've seen in my time coming here. As long as it doesn't warm past 34 should make for good riding.
Talked to some young guys in Hardware store. Said if you get off into the powder you best keep the throttle down. I wish I had brought my sled as it should get good in a couple days.

Thanks JROD. We don't have tall stuff to ride other than the bowls that I have never seen but I really have a lot of fun making the best of what Lincoln offers. Should be an interesting winter here. A blizzard earlier tonight. Will be spending a week in Seeley starting the 6th of January doing the sled dog races and my sled is going along. Will post pics in my album throughout the winter. If you need a place to stay in Lincoln, check out the Hotel Lincoln. The new owner is a great guy and snowmobiler. Ride from the parking lot.

conditions

So has anyone been out yesterday or today? Just wondering if the warm weather or RAIN has helped setup the snow at all. thinking about coming over this weekend.

Thanks guys.

Heading home to ride the Little Belts for a couple days. Then we will come back up. Hope to ride with some locals they promissed to show me a couple honey holes. Probably stuck holes knowing me.

john we did not make it to the snotell site to many stumps and rocks still we attempted to head upto the bowls but we fell short due to lack of snow and abundance of rocks and stumps (they must have snow snowtel is claiming 70 inches) GOOD ONE
