Golden conditions

I always take 20L to go to silent but I love burning gas... You park at the 17km mark on the FSR, and then you sled another 45ish to get into Silent.

It is snowing HARD right now in Golden, and looks like snow for the next 5 days. Not sure if this system is as heavy as it looks right now, but lets keep those fingers crossed!

Holy crap I just got home from hockey at about 10:30 and all of a sudden it started snowing like crazy, in the last 45 minutes about an inch of snow has accumulated on my car. It is super windy, snowing sideways but still puking. With about 15cm's of really light snow in the middle of the week and tonnes of wind yesterday and today followed by this new snow I'd be really careful of wind loaded slopes. If there's a cornice up above you, especially a new one, that's the wind loaded slope that you are riding on. Be safe, but boo yah some more snow! Sweet!

Rode Quartz yesterday, was ok, about 10cms in the parking lot, places with twice that in the alpine due to wind transport. Was able to cut free a lot of soft wind slabs on small slopes, careful of the big wind loaded slopes as they will go easyily also.

Sounds like it's a gamble, some days guys get through and return with no tickets etc, other days guys get turned around and/or ticketed. Haven't been yet myself to say hands down what's up, but these are the stories around town.

Hows Quartz right now???

Hey guys what are the conditions like at Quartz right now we will be in town next weekend and the wife wants to go sledding, I think thats where i,ll take her.

We were there a week ago and it was fairly rode out. We found some nice untracked in the trees/creek beds. It was very windy/hard up top so we had to stay low. There wasn't any new snow to speak of this past week but there's a skiff or two in the forecast for next weekend. Still probably your best bet for a ride next weekend though.

Just want to thank who ever found my chain and cable lock and hung it on the silent pass / Mcmurdo Cabin sign. I was in a rush to catch a heli ride when I lost them off the back of my sled, didn't have time to go back and look for them. It was great to find it when I came back out.

Rode Gorman today, well, through Gorman, headed into East Quartz and found some pretty good snow to play in, down in the trees it was really good, deep but still really good traction. Vis was poor so we stuck to the trees, had a good day. On the way out the light was a bit better and we were able to jib around on some of the wind drifts and kickers that East Quartz is so good for, some of those are shaping up really well and the landings were all deep enough and soft. Played in the bottom of Lang on the way out and it was similar, really good snow although not too much of it - 10cm's fresh in the past few days that has been wind transported to 20-30cm's in places. Same thing, played in the trees and hit a few wind lips on the way out when the light permited. No substantial snow in the forecast for next week but I had a great day, still worth riding and still waaaay better than work.

Was out there last weekend. Ive been riding golden over 10 years and have never seen so little snow this time of year. Got into some untracked stuff. Top is hard with 3ft of rotten snow underneith.

Thanks for the bad news portgrinder! At least it is only another 1.5 hrs to revy, but rules out the 1 day marathon runs. The snow just stops east of the rogers pass this year.

Our group was up at Quartz on Sunday, there was not much to talk about(as far as fresh snow is concerned), we did find some untracked area's, had some fun, trail was groomed to perfection, they need more snow, soon.
the well set-up snow allowed us to climb stuff on our stock xp's that was impossible a few weeks ago, the sun was also out, sorry about the crappy photo's

Talked to a few locals.

The reason for the road closure "seems" to be more about Forestry limiting their liability and cost than the actual integrity of the road.

Last year the number of rigs going up the hope road was unprecedented. More than a few idiots, a few went over the bank. Edit: Alot of people were treating it as a "pull your 4 place enclosed in with a 2wd half ton" sort of area. I saw my fair share of stuipidity last year for sure.

With the mill winding down, theres not much need for logs, hence logging roads. So what does Forestry have?... A HUGE liability in that road with no offsetting asset to go with it. Direct cost to keep that road open with no chance of money coming in. Wouldn't take a bean-counter long to figure that one out???

One would think that the road would be kept open for generating tourism dollars. It does a heck of a job of that both summer and winter. Problem would be that then 2 different divisions of gov't would have to actually talk to each other....odd?

So the poor Chatter guys are caught in the middle it seems. Good guys. Hope it all gets figured out.

Sounds like this sort of thing has been a common trend lately, this is just a much higher profile one. ie: bridges being removed etc..

Kicking Horse has received 17cm's of snow at their upper weather station, 2060 meters or 6760 feet. I shoveled about 5 cm's off my driveway this afternoon. Environment canada is call for 5-10 more overnight tonight at valley bottom, 3x as much at Kicking Horse and as is normal even more than that out of the Columbia Valley, Quartz etc. should see 30-45 cm's out of this storm cycle. Lets hope the wind stays still for a change. Other problem being everything out there is so firm, wind blown and sun glazed this new snow isn't going to want to stay put very well.
