Chute Climbing in Revy

How about some pics then, or a video of the snowpack test, and an explanation of it before the chute pics?? It comes across to me as reckless to see pics with no evidence of preparedness.

I am not gonna say "WOW", and "COOL" because of my above statement, although the 1200 doo is nice.

Whooohoooo I use to have cred!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Who ever said this "only on Snowest......" is so right......... lol

I don't have creditability................ I'm just a girl who preaches to the choir. I don't claim to be an AVY expert. I started a thread asking HOW I COULD HELP! I am also seeking out more knowledge. I admit I've made (costly) mistakes. I don't claim that I'll never make them again........ BUT, I do want to help to get others more aware. :)

I worried about these guys (I know them and I knew what they were up to!)all weekend. But was happy to hear that they had a group discussion BEFORE they left the parking lot that NO climbing was to be done until an ON THE HILL and at THE CLIMB assessment was made and AGREED upon by the group. Would I rather they hadn't climbed those chutes this past weekend, yes. But I feel better with them in those tight chutes that are steep and DO clean themselves out more often than if they had been climbing say Sugar (super?) Bowl.

And I made that post knowing someone would call me to the table on it. That's ok. The pics still look like WAY to much fun. (AVY conditions aside)

:beer;:beer;

Sorry Brandy,

I should really not react so quickly. My apologies. The shots are awesome. What irritates me is the deaths and the timing of the shots. Everybody pleading for those to not get on the hills.

I know these guys are pro's. Did assessments etc. (Is that a fracture line in one of the shots?) These chutes regularly slide and clean themselves out (?) were considered moderately safe.

They do this and that is their right, I am not saying they should not do what they want. I have skied chutes like that when I was younger without the knowledge that these guys have.

Hopefully we will not be saying (again)that we have another tragedy, these guys were experienced and took all the precautions, very sad.

I love the pics, don't get me wrong. I think they are amazing. Again, I apologize.

In light of all the avy deaths, the "preachers" are just trying to get avy awareness and education to be more "common knowledge". nothing more, nothing less. It's the uneducated riders that scare the s*** out of me.

with that being said, Papa Veedy does not want to film a fellow rider taking his/her last breath!! that is not his goal on the mountain. I'm sure they took all precautions and decided as a group that the chutes were pretty safe that day. I know some of the riders in the group and they are very prepared, and if they made the call that it was not safe enough to ride the chutes, we wouldn't be looking at these sweet pics. These guys know how to be safe.

It's the group/guy that rides into the bullpen and does the 2 second avy test(look at hill, hit the fun flipper) or less that is going to die or kill someone else.
These are the riders that we "preachers" are trying to reach!! If this is "you" please get some training and gear!!

to Veddy: keep up the good work, your films are excellent, the pics rock. hope you continue to keep the boys safe! allready can't wait to see the next boost, possibly "behind enemy lines" as the title?

I was going to go up with the boys on sat and decided to stay off and take my kids out skiing. When i talked to them and heard what they were climbing I was like what the fu^k are you doing, then I was thinkin man I wish I was there! haha real torn but I know they evaluated the hill before climbing and made a decsion to go ahead at these hills after a conversation and evaluation. Rite decsion...... mabey. I do agree these hills slide all the time and are alot less likley to slide because of a sled trigger.

I bet if there was only four guys out of the group riding that day they would have stayed away from them chutes. Just a thought.

Oh and mabey I'm just jelous I wasent there!! lmao Great pics and I know it was a wicked time.

Props to Brandy and ALL the rest of us who have been preaching and trying to get the word out.
Look at the results...
Some folks post some way wicked chute pix and a great deal of folks are calling them on the Avy aspect of what they were doing.
In ANY other year has that happened...NO WAY.

So in fact the word IS getting out and we can all feel good about that.

"They" did some tests and dug some pits and determined that the risk was "Moderate".

This is where I will point out that the highest percentage of Avy related deaths occur during "Moderate" conditions.

I knew this thread was gunna get allot of attention, I almost didnt even post the pics. I cannot stress enouph though that this is the smartest, most serious, most profesional group of riders ive had the pleasure to ride with. before anyone makes claims of us being recless they must see the level profesionalism brought to the table. We all have families and some of us are bringing wives and children on a regular basis. We cant assume that other mountains in bc have the same snowpack that revelstoke does.

The intention is to show some good pics to everyone and certainly not to say anything about our current avy situations! Veedy I promise is the last person to film something he thinks is reckless. If we were climbing snowloaded climbs than he would have turned his camara off and told us were dummies, hes always the first to say if he doesnt like a situation and everyone in our group listens to all points of view. You must actually be there for experience before you critisize.

Thanks for posting those pic's TB. They are amazing! Such a nice change from the doom and gloom posting of recent. One bad thing of those photos is that blue T-DOO..... I want one!

So explain to a stupid flatlander like myself what you did to verify that the conditions were safe? I havent seen any explanation on this thread of what took place to determine that conditions were safe. The only thing that has been mentioned is a discussion?

The pics are great thanks for posting... but with all the deaths I would like to learn something. Like what took place to determine attempting these climbs were OK.... please enlighten us.

The entire hill under these chutes had slid the weekend before. It was about a 30-36 inch slab pretty much to the rocks...so at this point we determined that the hill should not slide again, and even if it did, there was almost no snow on it. The snow in the chutes was minimal, we looked down them from the top and there were small trees and rock bumps in the snow that we have never seen before. Even if these chutes did slide, there wouldn't be enough snow come out to even reach the bottom of the hill because these chutes are probably millions of years old and have been sliding shale rock out of them for years and are somewhat crowned below the mouth of the chutes. This creates an effect where the snow disperses over the face of the hill below the chute. The most dangerous aspect of climbing these chutes on that day was crashing in them by hitting a rock, tree, or simply rolling the sled over on ourselves. I don't regret our decision, and I would do it again tomorrow, but there is no way we were going near the big open faces.
Consider yourself enlightend.

I ride with this group on a regular basis, and must say it is a privilege to do so!! The group takes the back country very serious, as it is something we all intend on doing for many years to come. 2 weeks prior to the pics being posted we all road together and not one hill was looked at by anyone. It was made clear before we left the parking lot the risk were much to high. And believe me pulling chutes in 3 feet of pow is much nicer than scaling the bare rocks.

Never the less we assest our conditions last weekend and made a group decision to rip sh** up!!!!.... We did it!! All safe and sound with no injuries or wrecked equipment.
Well... nothing major LOL

The risk is always there so take precautions, have a game plan, stick to it, execute it as we did last weekend!!!

Be safe have fun!!

Who ever is the chicken sh&* that cant sign a negative rep... I may be a looser but at least at the end of the day, I will be an ALIVE looser that goes home to see his family, friends, and continues on with my very successful life....

Narrow chutes are inherently less prone to avalanche. The concave shape of a chute provides compressive support to the snow pack. Where as the opposite, a convex slope or roll over (ie turbo) creates creep tension. A slab can build up elastic energy from creeping downhill and all it takes is a small trigger to initiate a slide. You can compare this to cutting an elastic band with a knife. Limp rubber band - harder to slice, stretch it out and just touching the knife to it will cut it easily.

To add, the chutes these guys were climbing, I'm guessing, are excess of 40 degrees. Avi's become more rare on extremely steep terrain because most of the snow sloughs off before it has a chance form into dangerous slabs.

Dudes were keen on getting out and sending some big stuff, they picked a relatively safer spot. The key word there is RELATIVELY. Glad it worked out for you, cool photos.

whinners

After thinking about this thread for a while it seems to me that these same people whinning about climbing these chutes are the same people who walk right by the fools drinking and smoking dope at the cabin or eles where on the hill and say nothing, this people only put them selfs at risk not the entire mountain of people, not to mention that the risk of being killed on the way to revy is a much higher risk, and how many of these same people are the ones having some beers on the drive out there on the ROAD, it seems to me that people are not willing to be responsible for there actions and would like every one eles look out for them (hense the government bail outs) people are to worried about everyone eles and not relizing that there far grader dangers that they accept everyday, every time ALL of us go to the mountains to ride we have the option to go any where we wish, we teach our kids to just say no to drugs but yet don't expect grown aldults to make there own descions upon where to and not to ride and face the repreconssions.

any way completly my own opinion have a nice day
