Chute Climbing in Revy

We were the ones pulling the chutes in the lower Bullpen. We evaluated the situation and made a decision. The entire hill had slid the weekend before, the slopes were not wind loaded, and have not seen the sun this year. The hill had a minimal snow layer on it, the chutes had minimal snow in them, and the avy rating had been reduced to moderate. We knew before we left the parking lot that no one in the group was to touch Sugar bowl or Turbo. It was also discussed that nobody hit a hill until it was evaluated and we all decided it was safe. We never touched a hill that had a funnel effect or a drainage area below a large face.
What is happening this year with the avys is unbelievably sad, and in most cases could probably have been avoided with good decision making and education.
As far as I'm concerned, the chutes are the safest hills to climb if the drainage spans the hill, if the chute collects at the bottom then stay off, plain and simple.
Question our decision making if you like, but making a smart and educated decision is better than sitting at home. We had 3 days of sun, great snow, and great friends to ride with. How was your weekend????

My weekend in Revy was Epic! Totaly agree with Neil. the chutes on Boulder are safe right now, you would not catch me on big vert slopes like sugar bowl or turbo but all the lower bullpen chutes were safe. very limited snow in them. the chutes clean themselves on a regular basis. bc avalance flew into keystone over the weekend and dug tests. results were moderate.

Sounds like the boys did a good hazard assessment prior to climbing and drove by and steered clear of many other hills. :beer;

Awesome pictures Laird, ...wicked pulls up some of the most challenging chutes, ...definately only for the PRO's.

It was a great weekend.

Zach...., there is no doubt that our sport, (and of course, many loved ones), have suffered dearly with all of this season's loss's due to Avalanches, but rest assured that "these guys" are trained, equipped, experienced and very knowledgable. I will not bother getting into the details on this thread. I believe the pictures were posted for the enjoyment of fellow enthusiasts, ..at a time when we could all use some cheering up.

Nice pictures. As a flatlander, it was pretty neat to see you guys pulling this stuff. There was a trio of us sitting on the South side of Sugar bowl watching, one of us has a HP3 Nytro. I'm by no means a Avy expert, but conditions looked decent before anyon jumps too hard on these guys. Some of the guys who were climbing in Sugar Bowl were at a much larger risk..considering they were climbing right on the edges of the slide area and then across the cornice above it. :face-icon-small-sho

I was there as well with some friends and was pokin at a few smaller chutes in the BullPen on my Nytro. I stayed out of the areas that looked bad. The areas tha looked suspect were mainly rock faces where typical large slides could develop, not the same scenario in those chutes. Sugar Bowl did slide where I have seen it before. I saw no evidence or symptamatic issues showing a possible slide could happen in the regular climbing areas there or I wouldn't have ran anything in the BullPen area.
However, that's not to say I wasn't in a Heightened sense of awareness the whole time. And when I got stuck in some deep snow on the top of what I consider a relatively easy climb, I was nervous digging and turning my sled until I got to pit depth and surveyed the snow conditions.

Nice photos. Exactly what I was thinkin.. Coyotegirl.....http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123283&highlight=coyotegirl

Ummm ,you can help by encouraging the young kids out there to strive to do this with responsibility. What I assume is not shown is the avalanche discussion assessment, risks, EMT's etc. Sponsors will not pay for people to do extreme sports and die. Not really good.

If you are serious about what you believe in, go all the way. You just took all of your creditability away. BTW, anybody else that preaches avalanche safety and said, WOW thats cool, is in the same boat.....

Great Photos, Thanks for sharing.:D

Now,
Ummmm, Hello, You can preach avy safety and still appreciate what these extreme riders do.

All most people are "preaching" about is to get others to learn about snow conditions, what causes slides and how to avoid them. The basic idea is to encourage people to learn as much about Avys as they feel nessary to better manage the risk everybody faces in the mountains...The purpose isn't intended to be all knowing and dictate what others do in their lives. These are all experienced riders who must decide for themselves when to climb or not to climb, I still have the right to think that it looks amazing, don't I ?

BTW...
Brandy didn't loose all her creditability, she just lost it from YOU!

looked sweet, wish we could have met up with u sat and not just sunday.
U didnt leave us much to ride, just a couple small ones on the way to monster.
and for the avy awarness. we spent a hour at both the top and bottom of the chute assessing the risks. turned out good.

Just curious on what assessments were done....did you guys dig a pit?

Whooohoooo I use to have cred!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Who ever said this "only on Snowest......" is so right......... lol

I don't have creditability................ I'm just a girl who preaches to the choir. I don't claim to be an AVY expert. I started a thread asking HOW I COULD HELP! I am also seeking out more knowledge. I admit I've made (costly) mistakes. I don't claim that I'll never make them again........ BUT, I do want to help to get others more aware. :)

I worried about these guys (I know them and I knew what they were up to!)all weekend. But was happy to hear that they had a group discussion BEFORE they left the parking lot that NO climbing was to be done until an ON THE HILL and at THE CLIMB assessment was made and AGREED upon by the group. Would I rather they hadn't climbed those chutes this past weekend, yes. But I feel better with them in those tight chutes that are steep and DO clean themselves out more often than if they had been climbing say Sugar (super?) Bowl.

And I made that post knowing someone would call me to the table on it. That's ok. The pics still look like WAY to much fun. (AVY conditions aside)

:beer;:beer;

i'm sure the next time these guys plan on going sledding they will confront all of you on the avy. risk weather or not its safe. yes the risk is high but not every flake of snow is going to slide off the rocks.

and if they want to go climb a chute that is their choice not yours, if your scared of the avy risk go ride in Saskatchewan.

awesome pics guys, wish i had a pair big enough to poke up those chutes.

Gotta love S.W. on the same page people are posting about the high avy danger and to stay off the hills, you can get a thread about pulling chutes.

Exactly what I was thinking, you have multiple threads of people giving other people chit for climbing, people practically screaming to "stay off the hills" then click on this thread and some of the same people are saying "sweet pics or great climb."

the steep hills you usually dont have to worry bout sliding they slide on there own, not like the half a$$ mellow hills that arent steep enough to go by them selves so your on it when they go, much more dangerous and any one with avalanche knowledge will tell you the same.

sorry guys but there seems to be a level of hypocrosy in this thread that is beyond belief. 16 dead now. How many years has it been since that many were killed in avalanches before the end of january? Think I'll continue to stay home.
I know that you guys are good riders and all but I think maybe you should take another look at you pics. There are two of them that show a fracture in the snow at the top of the funnel on the one chute. If I were to see that you bet your *** I'm not going near it. Doesn't matter if its only a few inches deep. 6" of snow slides 10 feet, now you've got the weight of another sled on the hill, could easily cause a slide even on a stable hill in my opinion. If its worth it to you then think about your wives, girlfriends, kids. Maybe even your grandma if you have to! Too many dead guys...

Oh, I know that these guys do assessment, calculated risks with knowledge. I like the pics, way cool.

It's just that with all of the deaths, we are back to climbing chutes that clean themselves out on a regular basis.

Hey the pros are out there doing this, must be safe. I guess that I am not so worried about SW'ers, but the people/kids that strive to be like these guys that do not have the knowledge.

We saw this in the extereme skiing years back, kids launching cliffs to imitate there idols. Compressed spines, crippled because of no knowledge.

The films, Sleahead magazines etc only show the "shot". I know the prep for these assements is not glorious.
