2013/14 Snowy Range snow conditions

We saw snowbike tracks all over out there! They ventured climbs/areas that we werent going to.

Went up today- Super cold and windy but snowed most of the day

10-24" in most of the spots we hit, I was surprised by the lack of snowmobiles I was even able to make the first tracks up and out of the baby climb to the west of the lake marie hill...

we tapped a few things but no damage and found good conditions for the first week of December!!

btw- we (group of 5) werent playing it 'early season' safe! whats a few a arms when ur already buying jet fuel haha

Another report from 12-8-13

Rode out of Green Rock on Sunday. It was brutally cold, with temperatures at the truck around 0F and wind chills easily in the -20F to -30F range. The weather was sunny in the morning but by 12-1pm snow began to fall and it got colder because of the clouds. We wussed out around 1pm, started around 9am, only went about 20 miles.

Road is covered out of the parking lot now up the hill. Still some thin spots where it is wind blown but definitely passable. We rode around toward Brooklyn Lake and the snow was great in the trees. Seemed like 2-3 feet on the ground in some spots. In open areas (meadows, hills) there are still some landmines but if you're careful it's not a big deal. Some areas had a great base but we still found some areas of willows with no bottom to it. Well on our way to a great season of riding up there. Still some blow holes in creek beds and around the edge of lakes. Be aware of that. Two pictures below, from near the Libby Lake Campground.

I was recently forwarded an email from Biodiversity Conservation Alliance(BCA). This is the wilderness group in Laramie Wyoming. They are trying to gain support for the new winter travel plan in the Snowy's. They are pulling videos from areas that are not filmed in the Snowy's to convince people that we are topping trees and destroying the back country. Please everyone write the forest service tell the what fun you have riding the Snowy range and explain that if anymore restrictions are place in the Snowy's you will be force to find new areas to ride. You know that wallets are affected the forest service will have to listen. To contact to the forest service please follow the link provided. Lets make our letters out number the opposing side.

If you would like a copy of the email I am more than happy to provide it for you. Please send me an email Kyle@sledthreads.biz and I will forward it.

Holy crap that guy put Steven Marlenee's (member here on SW) vid link up on that PDF

So a couple snowmobiles hurt a couple trees a year. Who fvcking cares? Have you seen how many trees (live ones without beetle kill) have been knocked down by the logging companies on 101 as it exists the Forest toward Elk Mtn??? Tons... More mass of trees cut down there this fall/winter than all snowmobilers in the history of man kind combined. I see the same thing happening this year up on Cam Pass too. Tons of logging operations.

It's just a screwed up agenda. Makes you wonder where all the common sense ran off to.

I bet the tree huggers don't mind the few that knocked down to make their home. Something has to be done in this country to stop this nonsense! Some people must have nothing better to do than make up crap to ruin other peoples day.

Just talked to a Colorado DOW guy. He said that the most effective person at applying pressure is the Governor's office.

I think we should also request (insist) that any new 'special orders' not be issued without first allowing public comment/meeting on any proposals. I'm going to also try to get a commitment that they allow public comments before implementing any new 'special rules'.
A nice way to get some attention is to have Wyoming residents contact their Senators and Representatives to request that the Forest Service not cram these new rules 'down our throats' without listening to the public. We demand that the Forest Service at least listen to the public before issuing these 'special orders'.
Contact info for Wyoming politicians are as follows;
Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) http://www.barrasso.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=ContactUs.ContactForm

Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) http://www.enzi.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact?p=e-mail-senator-enzi

Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) http://lummis.house.gov/contact/

It's not that they don't have anything better to do. They have figured out a way to get paid to do it. Last year their operating budget(2012) was $237,068.74. Their income for 2012 was $254,868.91.

The funding was given to them in the form of Grants, individual contributions, special events and miscellaneous.

Deleted my vid from youtube that was on there as well…that wasn't even a good crash either! lol. Thanks for the heads up XFIRE.

It's funny how these groups get all butt hurt about snowmobilers in the mountains "ruining trees". But it's okay to go up and cut down a tree for Christmas. It's also okay to use a snowmobile to take you back up the hill when back country skiing.

It's only okay if you where Patagonia and are on skis. There is plenty of area for all of us. Maybe snowmobilers should start a petition to keep them out of the mountains. This issue gets really old and all I can say is respect the land boys and girls. Don't leave trash from your lunch and if someone in your group does pick it up and let them know why you did.
