Ride Report 11/30/13
Rode out of Green Rock on Saturday 11/30. Getting up to the hill is brutal. There is no snow on the highway in the parking area and only 1 track (very bumpy) in the ditch to get up the hill. We were already there so decided to give it a go and we were able to find some hills and areas with 2-3 feet of snow. The problem is, the main trail (WY-130) is paved and there are very few places where there is enough snow to ride on it (your carbides dig right down to the pavement) so you have to ride a 1 lane track in the ditch some spots.
Even once we got higher the snow was marginal in some places, with buried objects a real concern. We survived without any damage by being careful, but they need more snow. We came across some areas with open water as well.
The snowpack is setting up to be a great base for covering obstacles, however the age of the snowpack has created a base that will be VERY dangerous for avalanche conditions with all the new snow in the forecast. Be very aware when heading out in the next week of the weak snowpack under the new snow. There will likely be a very real threat of avalanches.
We only put on about 25 miles, and rode from 9am-1pm. In my opinion, it's not worth going until they get more snow.
