2011/12 Big Horns North/South snow conditions

We rode on Tuesday, it has been a while since I have been in charge of the ride, but I did pretty good for not riding the Horns for several years. We found some over the hood powder, had a few almost sticks, and of course drank a few drinks in Bear. The snow is setting up good the temps have been unreal and a tad on the pathetic side for warm....in the 30-40's. As far as riding and finding untouched areas the locals can usually find the honey holes, to find these you either need to hook up with a local or a guide usually. Like I said the snow is decent and with the lack of snow everywhere I am not complaining on what we have found. We will be riding for the next 2 weekends up there Steph look me up!!!

I have been out the northerns 2 times and had to look for good snow. I don't have a problem looking for but if I head out this next week can I still find it?

What ever you guys do!!!! DON'T go to the South Side, there is no snow, we came back with probably over 500 dollars worth of carnage!!!! The snow was deep in places, but absolutely no base!!!

Ouch, sorry to hear about your luck! Suppose to be heading up tomorrow, hopefully it's not terrible.

grand

was grand central station up at bear today holy moly! i dont think i have ever seen that many people there at one time! even though i saw so many at the lodge i only ran into two guys riding, when i stopped once i could hear a sled in the distance. kind of suprising seeing them all in one place and none out riding?
the snow is pretty bad though, straight sugar where ever i was, and all my favorite spots were tracked up. all the hills are solid all the valleys are baseless. the trees might be good if not previously tracked but good luck.
really crappy vid

Also wondering how snow is up there. Looks like snow on Tuesday, so hopefully it gets pounded. We are leaving from Bismarck, ND, thursday, gonna ride over the weekend. Couple of first time mountain riders are coming with, so maybe it will be decent enough for them to get a taste of mountain riding. Any updates would be great. Thanks.

I would say your gonna hit it perfect!! The snow is super hard right now making a great base, but like you said they are supposed to get snow this week!! You should be riding in great snow!!

Here is the forecast for High Country

I pray to all that is good in this world that they get that much snow and that the new forecast of a lot of snow for mid-January through february stays true. I wanna ride in some pow so bad I even dreamed about it last night! I'm desperate!

Theres a group of us coming out weds night gonna be there tell saturday afternoon. Im pretty familiar with the area we ususaly come out once or twice a year. Just curious where everyone has been finding the best snow to ride in? Would appreciate any help on here we can get being it will be our first trip out this year and would like to get some new pros broke in.

Well we will be staying at elkview so hopefully someone there can point us in the right direction. Since nobody on here has any light to shed on the topic. We have a good group of partiers if anyone wants to come over and join!

We are heading out tomorrow morning from Iowa. Riding Thursday through Saturday. Calling for 6-10 inches tonight through tomorrow morning so it should be pretty decent for this year. Staying at Elk View.

red grade road parking lot

Anyone try red grade road south of sheridan? I realize its not gonna be great the first few miles but wondering if it was possible to get up it. Were staying in sheridan and we are there to ride sleds not in the pickup, so just checking my options. Thanks

I think most people have been finding the best snow to the south and west of bear lodge.

Yes you can ride red grade road, there is a parking lot right as the road turns to gravel, but last I heard snow up there was scarce and I have been up there in the summer a lot and there are a lot of landmines up there!

Those of you guys going up this week let us know how the storm that is happening right now panned out.

red grade parking lot

The way the snow is this year I would trailer to granite pass and unload and go west more gas to burn in the prime snow areas imo.
