2011/12 Big Horns North/South snow conditions

snow conditions

We have been out here since monday. We are finding small areas to hit powder. Most areas are rock hard and wind blown. Snow is okay not great by any means. Around three feet in ravines and trees. Most areas of powder have been completely molested.

Was just there a couple days ago, heading back to bear tomorrow. The snow was good when we were there, but don't expect not to hit any rocks or stumps. My sled has 400 miles on it and after the trip to the horns it looks like it has a season of riding on it. Gotta pay to play! Bent some stuff, but nothing major, finally got my skid plate in from cat!

Heading West

as you can see from the picture the snow sucks.........Stay home. Your welcome.

Beefspots - I see you're from the area. We'll be coming out Saturday. Any chance you might want to show some MN guys around?

It is great to see that Wyoming has snow even if it is better in the trees. Where I live in Montana(Great Falls) and ride(Lincoln/Seeley Lake) there is little or no snow. Sled has taken one ride around the yard in Lincoln. Anyway, I stayed at Bear Lodge in 05 when we had a snowless winter and had a great time but thinking about Arrowhead this time. How is the snow near Arrowhead vs Bear Lodge area and how is Arrowhead Lodge generally speaking? Thanks

Arrowhead is quiet & the lodge has great burgers. Everyone seems to take off and head to Bear to tear it up. You are only a few miles away from Bear and Elk View. Snow was good around the lodge over New Years. Since Joe took over as the manager, the place is running like a top.

Arrowhead is nice and quiet. The last couple of trips we have just not unloaded at the lodges and trailer down to the granite pass parking lot, to cut out a bunch of trail riding. The snow is always deeper away from the lodges, whether you go west or south.

How is base coming along? Last time we were up it was very inconsistent but hopefully now with the added snow, wind, and warmer weather it is building up a bit? Been watching the snotels as always and it's been doing some settling.

Baldy is showing up to 4" on Thursday. Every little bit helps!

Northern BH base

It was stiff'n up in spots but in others still pretty sketchy (12/31/11)........I'll welcome the warm weather to settle things If we get a good storm after it will be great and safe of land mines (for the most part).

How many miles on you new 600 steph? Do you like it? oops sorry Im off topic asking you that......I'll understand if you don't answer me. LOL

Lol, if we can't chat a bit this forum would be really dead and boring. Thanks for the info on the base.

Can't remember the miles but think it was a bit over 1.7 hours... :face-icon-small-blu Had a great time just did a lot of talking and looking at what was under the cornices, etc. I spent most of my time tipping my sled back over, lol.

Overall I really liked it, the chassis is going to be really fun once I get more seat time. The engine and power were confidence inspiring to me, very smooth and consistent. Brant wasn't impressed with the power (as I predicted) but he too thought it was just right for me. Have some parts to put on and adjustments to make, but with all this mud haven't wanted to pull it off the sled deck into the shed to work on it.

Hopefully nothing stupid happens (the pump for our well burned up last week so we spent our days off getting that fixed) and we are able to ride next week.

I agree on the warm weather, need to get a base setup. It kind of scares me that is in the 50's down here though. My horses are standing the shade and sweating. Cross your fingers for snow after this!

Its shapping up to be a nice year for sledding if it would just snow. We havent had a good base in years. Hopefully it just gets cold and snows again before what we have is gone. BUT im still waiting on parts so it can wait to snow hard and heavy next weekend.

Steph, you need to get more time and miles on your sled and it'll wake up. We are riding Saturday for sure, don't care what conditions are, been a lame year so far.

Steph, how does it compare to your M7? Power and Handling wise??

RYan

Power- that best comparison would be a side by side one. The pro's power is a lot smoother, no hiccups on the bottom end, just pulls it smooth all the way through. I can't really say if it is more power or not, it is in the same range though.

Handling- Granted the m7 is still a very fun sled, light and flickable. But the pro takes responsiveness to a new level in powder. No wrestling, no hanging onto a sidehill by the skin of my teeth. I actually had a hard time adjusting to not being so drastic in my body language.

I didn't take on real tight lines through the trees due to the fact that I was still figuring out what makes her tick. Watching Brant pull a really sweet do or die sidehill through a patch of trees really had me chomping at the bit. He is going to be really hard to keep up with this year, but at least I have the sled to do it on..... next time.... :face-icon-small-hap

Don't forget your snow dances! But has it been warm this week or what? It was t shirt weather the last two days out on the powder river!

This coming from someone whos from gillette. Snow is decent after this last storm from what ive seen and been told. Guide service anywhere in the Horns is going to suck. Pay a local in the form of beer and be shown a better time.

HERE, HERE!!!

We'll show you the time of your life for a 12 pack!!!

Hey Guys,

We have a group leaving for the big horns tonight, just wondering if anyone knows of a map that might label some of the places. this will be our first trip out to there and are trying to find some good places to ride.

Just like to study up on the area a little.

Hope for some snow tonight and there after..

Thanks
