2010/11 Snow conditions Snowy Range

me and some buds are coming to the area for the first time in a week. i need tips on where to stay near laramie. where to start the ride? where to play? we normally go to cooke and we were told this area will exceed our expectations.

Parking freekin' idiots!!

Yes, the snow was incredible. Deep, deep, deep and super fun! Visablity was the typical.....terrible at times. Stay in the trees.

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE........Have some people absolutely lost their mind when it comes to parking. Yesterday, I parked at Greenrock about 7:30 am. Less than 10 rigs up there at the time and I parked my truck and trailer without incident.

In less than 20 minutes, it was a non-stop stream of rigs and giddy snowmobilers. We finished dressing and off we went. Our group had a sled clutch go down so a couple of our guys had their day end early. We followed them as they towed the dead sled out to the truck and we were back at our truck(s) around the noon hour.

When we pulled up to our truck, there was no way I could have left if I wanted to! :face-icon-small-dis Of course there were truck in front and behind me............but now there were trucks and trailers parked "double deep"!! 3 rigs in the immediate vicinity of my truck.....totally pinned in!

I know it's a popular place........sometimes you need to park down the road....maybe a mile or two....whatever it takes! I',m just appalled at the nerve, gaul and selfishness that fellow sled-heads would do that.

My rant will probably fall on all the wrong eyes because I would like to believe that the residents of Snowest are the seasoned sledders that ride hard and respectfully and would help another sledder without question. I would also like to think these "seasoned" sledders know how to park without putting another in a major inconvenience.

At the end of our day, we were able to back out because (luckily) those folks behind us came back in time to move so we could as well.

Granted just a rant and I hope someone who parked like an *** reads this and thinks twice about doing it again because I thought more that twice about pissing on your door handles! :D But I didn't!

It's supposed to warm up this week with a buttload of wind. We're headed out that way next weekend as well. Wish we would've been there this weekend. I've stayed at Albany Lodge before, definately recommend.

I hear you! It seems to be getting worse, just like parking on both sides of the highway and leaving only one lane of traffic. It's not just the out of staters, I have seen plenty of locals doing it as well. Lets just hope it does not cause other issues with in years to come.

We got up there about the same time. Could have parked up where you guys did, but seeing what has been going on all year, we parked down a ways on the other side of the road. Glad we did, had to head home about 2. There would have been no way to get a rig out of several of those spots.

On a good note, the snow was the best I've ridden all year. We brought two guys out who have never seen the mountains, or that much snow. They will be sore for several days from getting themselves unstuck.:lol:

Yup, I am amazed the way some park. See it every weekend, seriously it's not that hard, if you're not up early--park down the road. That simple!

yeah happened to us the last time we were there too. some jack wad had to park right up against us so i couldnt even get the sleds loaded cuz we load thru the front and barely had enough room to pull the truck and trailer out of the spot and load in the traffic. was the only truck that did that there too. it would have been a little different if he parked by a buddy but by someone they dont even know. and it was a local trailer too cuz i have seen it there everytime i have been there and seen it sitting in laramie all the time

We just parked in the first or second parking lot on the way up but we didn't ride up top, we took trail P (since windy and crappy up top) and that is right off that parking lot so it was perfect for us and we were the only two rigs using that parking lot and the only riders that hit all the fresh meadows and an ungroomed trail with 4-5 feet of powder.

I envy anyone going out there right now - it was EPIC snow!

You out of state riders aren't supposed to find the good places to ride lol glad you won't be out to track up my spots to often that would cramp my style

Riding update-Sunday, February 27th. Rode from Green Rock-Libby Creek-through the gap to the Widowmaker. Great snow in most places! Then rode the west side the rest of the day. 2-3 feet plus easy!!! 12-13 lbs of boost without track poaching made it 1/2 way up the Widowmaker...very deep! Amazing snow on the west side:face-icon-small-sho

Had a blast! Got a ton of snow thursday night and on through the day on friday. 5+ feet in some of the areas we were hitting. Thanks Kris for showing us around a bit on friday (sorry I had to get pulled out of a few trees). Sat. and Sun. were spent riding in and searching for untouched areas. Cant figure out how to view the vids on my digital camera, but here are a few pics. Awesome trip, wish they could all be this good!

Edit- I was going to say something about the trails, but it slipped my mind. Trails were absolute horse$hit. I dont ride the trails for the experience of trail riding, but I do have to take them to get where I want tot go. Friday and sat were the worst, but even on sunday after the groomer had gone through they were pretty bad by the end of the day. U was the worst, but N got bad too. I would not advise anyone to take the O trail. It may be better now, but on wed it was terrible. Hard and rough with big wind cutouts. The wind was blowing so hard we actually got lost for little bit in something called 7 fools. Lucky we did though cause we ended up finding these 2 old morons on phazer short tracks that were out for their 3rd ride EVER. They were lost one guy was stuck the other guy was filpped upside down. They were not getting out of there without help and they were really not prepared to spend the night.

Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range

Issued: 03/04/2011 5:50 AM by John Snook

Highlights
6-9" of new snow around Loveland and Berthoud Passes, 2-4" elsewhere in the zone. The primary avalanche concern is triggering the new snow into sluffs and small slides. These slides could be larger toward the south side of the zone. Consider the consequences should a even a small slide carry you into timber or cliff areas.
Avalanche Danger
The avalanche danger for the Loveland and Berthoud Pass areas of the Front Range zone is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) on all steep slopes near and above treeline. Below treeline, the danger is MODERATE (Level 2). For other portions of the zone that received less than 4" of snow, the danger is overall MODERATE (Level 2).

Wind loading in the Snowies could easily take these up a notch!

Road on Wednesday. It was my wires first trip for the season so we stayed close to the trails. There was plenty of powder on the east side of any tree line and with in 50 yards of it. In the trees the powder was still fantastic. They are calling for a lot of new snow in the next week. Be careful and leave information about your group with someone at home or at the lodge. The more information search and rescue has the better chance of being found.

Riding update-Saturday, March 5th. Rode out of Green Rock-Libby Creek-through the gap-Widowmaker. Weather forecast called for fairly nice day...not the case! Early morning not bad but winds and snow picked up strong throughout the day. Good snow 1-2 feet powder range in protected(no wind) areas. Headed west-southwest towards Quealy warming hut via highline area right below peaks and the snow was awesome. Minimal tracks and 2-3 foot average. Snowing very hard...2-3 inches in a 5 hour period. Came out through the gap, very tough, visibility @ 20 feet. Overall great snow and okay visibility when in the trees. Avy factor-snow is starting to break and the wind is loading up +30 degree slopes for potential danger. Wouldn't be surprised if the Widowmaker breaks loose soon. Riding tomorrow and will post afterwards! Hope this helps, snow is great but climb with caution!!!
