2010/11 Snow conditions Snowy Range

I just noticed on the Snotel for the Madres that they show 12" of new snow TODAY!!
The forecast calls for another 12" by Thursday pm..
The snowies have not got the cloud cover yet but it's coming.

Temps are to dip big time.
Thurs. high 15
Fri. high -5
Sat. high 5

Avalanche danger should be at moderate to high

Watch for the wind to pick up and then the avy. danger to become extreme..
Be careful and take your time on the hills

Remember.... One at a time on the hills..

Cheers and Happy New year!!
See you on the mountains
David

22 degrees up here on the mountain right now - light snow. Sounds like it is supposed to get after it starting at 11pm.

will be there tomorrow night if the roads allow! sounds like it will be polaris country! jk, just hope to make it. if snotel shows a foot they got two, always better snow on the madres side, will be handlebar deep @ 115? by friday i bet.

Snotel is now up to 94" in the Madres!!! We may get over the 100" mark before the year is over!
That hasn't happen in the last 15 years..

I hope the roads stay open..

Can someone explain why the Madres area has so many snotel sites and the Snowies only have 5 (4 that work - and what's up with Sand Lake?)

True.. That was on April 7th The madres had 137"
As for Dec. 2009, the highest "Old Battle" recorded was 67"
Jan. highest was.. 80"
Feb. 85"
It wasn't until March that we got to the 100"
So knock on wood... This year looks to be unbelievable:face-icon-small-hap
We hit 97" at 1:00 this am.
It's settled a touch to 95" with a temp of 11.
Thats 20" from Wed. am.
So when you go over the divide I bet there is closer to 3 feet of new!!

Cause the Madres are cooler..:face-icon-small-coo

I would guess because the East side drainages from the Madres are going
to the North Platte River in which central Wyoming gets its majority of water.
The 3 lakes that are filled from the run off. Seminole, Pathfinder, and Alcova.
They need to be able to control run off at the dams. So they need to get an idea of what to expect during the run off.

With a good run off we get to keep Seminole and Pathfinder full.
In the past drought years Pathfinder has been as low as 30% capacity.
Most of the water that comes from the North Platte goes to Nebraska for agriculture.
Last year was the first time in the last 15 years that Pathfinder was actually spilling over.
This year as it looks now, it should spill again.

Hows that for an explanation?

I'd say that is a pretty good explanation!!! Sounds like it will be an awesome year out there. With all the snow out there it sure sucks living in MN and having to drive 12 hrs to have fun. Wish I could talk my wife into moving out there.

Taking a break for lunch. It has not been much of a storm so far around here - I would say 3" here at the cabin so far - hopefully it will get it into gear soon....

16 degrees out right now

We started a couple of slash piles that we piled up last summer (beetle kill) on fire to stay warm!

Snow looks great! Can't wait to get back down to that country to ride some more! Thanks for keeping us updated:beer;

It was a cold sob. Friday I think the high was -12 snow was good if you stayed in the trees. Today the guys went up and didn't even unload the wind was so bad, but they had kids with them. We enjoyed the new year in centennial and drove home this morning. Be back out friday!:face-icon-small-hap

Yep - it was a cold one. The biggest issue we had was with our goggles, we had to keep rotating them. It was also a little chilly going down the roads, so we stuck to the trees as much as we could. We got 80 miles in total between New Years Eve and New Years Day. I don't know if we'll ride much today or not.

Hmmm, handlebar deep snow, suns coming out, winds not too bad; what to do-what to do? Hell, I guess I'll go sleddin'
