2009/10 Togwotee snow conditions

Was out today with a small group of locals. Very little new snow as far as I can tell since early January. The base seems inconsistant. In places its a thin layer under a bit of powder that will giver way to feet of sugar snow that sucks machines to the ground. Yet we were able to find a number of hilsides and gullies that held good base and gave hours of challenging enjoyment. I think we would all agree another coulple feet out of a warm wet system would go a long way to fill in the riding and set up for some powder flurries. I however would not discourage anyone looking to make a trip up because just outside of the beaten down meadows and straitaways that we saw tons of people riding we sat wondering why everyone was passing by the oppertunity to ride the untouched snow we were tearing up all day long. By the way all though I dont ride with guides do to the experience the friends I ride with have of the area It is true that the guys who make a living searching out the best snow all year long can most deffinately get you there and its worth every dime.

We just rode Togwotee Jan 8-16. We found untouched 4' snow everyday. The sky was clear and we only had one cloudy day. The crowds were non-existant and the service was excellent! Our group has ridden there annually for 10 years. If you don't know the area, hire a guide to find the powder. If your guide can't challenge you the first day then switch! The snow is there! Don't be fooled by the web-cam photo of the parking lot!!!

Not much. It was still snowing when I left today. Hope it builds a little, had the snow give way out from under me and dove into a creek and broke a ski just north of brooks lake. Suck! Anyone got some IQ takeoffs for cheep maybe maybe?????

Thank you all who steered us towards togwotee. Spent the last 7 days in tog it was great 4-5' snow in most spots on the shaded side. We found a ton of untouched snow that kept us more then busy for the week.

So what's the deal I heard Towgatee is getting hit with a lot of snow this WKD? Is that true you guys getting snow??

The snow uptop is decent. The base is really firming up and this storm has dropped a fairamount the last few days. Still lacking compared to good years but condition improved dramatically this week. Snow was still coming down strong as we left the mountain today. Weather looks like it could continue for the following week at least untill tues or wed. Anyways this will make your snomobile trip worth the drive for sure. Have fun guys.:face-icon-small-ton:beer;

Snowed pretty much all day thursday,friday in Jackson not much up top UNTIL today about 4-5 inches in parking lot more up top I am told. Pretty much white out conditions in GTNP all day SAT. Possibly more SAT night and SUNDAY.
Will have to go see tommorow !!!!

We just got back from Togwotee last night and the snow was at the lowest amount I have ever seen out there in the last 13 years I have been going there, but we found good riding everyday. There is small pockets of untouched snow because there is not alot of people there. You just have to look at places you might not normally ride. We did not have a guide and found good riding, but some fresh snow is much needed.

Togwotee Pass, Jan. 24th - 2010

Yes Carter, You were stuck... But so were Chris and I... For everyone saying that we have no snow out here... Here's looking at you!!!
Even though I live here in Jackson and am very good friends with Carter... I have nothing to gain by saying this, But... If you are coming out here to ride deep powder, don't hesitate to get a guide!!

Thank you all for the togwotee reports, we spent 7 days riding there last week after hearing some reports I was a little worried on how it would be.... We pretty much had 7 days of fresh untracked snow, awesome to say the least. 3-4 feet pow in most backcountry areas maybe a 5 feet in shaded windblown spots. And a couple pics Thanks
