why was the poo blowing up from 08-10?

i have burned mine down three times but love the sled still. the dealer has been great in helping solve any problems and ive always been able to at least get out. no complaints abut polaris here and my dad is antsy to pick up his pro!

What elevation do you ride at and what dealer are you using?

It's great to hear that there are dealors that actually set the machines up, since the machines don't even come in crates anymore and are pretty much turn key, just cut off the shrink rap. You don't get any gas, cover, belt or even gear. I miss the good old days, but still charged a set up fee. Money the root of all evil. Tri-City I applaud you, keep up all the good work. Here's a question are there any 800s that are running programmers from the start that had any engine problems?

My understanding is there where some because they had a bad batch of pistons that where failing so didn't matter what you had or where doing they failed regardless. That was what the first recall took care of. Then they were have additional problems that when they recalled all of them and updated them to 2010 specs.

You are battling a few problems with these sleds. Internally, you have piston to cylinder clearance that is out of whack from the factory. The pistons are too small and don't meet specification. Basically your motor is wore out before you ever start it.
The problem here is that under warranty you will continue to get your motor fixed with the same out of specification Polaris parts. You would need to switch to a Wiseco piston to bring them to spec. This would void your warranty, but would likely give you a trouble free sled.
Externally you are battling a very lean mid range fuel map. Not a problem with the WOT crowd, but if you spend any time in this area it builds heat fast. Now couple that with Polaris keeping your exhaust valves closed it retains the heat in and around the exhaust port. All of these that I have seen blown have been scored on the exhaust side. Now just add a Power commander and void the warranty again and you can fix the problem and have a reliable sled.
There have also been some voltage regulator issues. These fail and the voltage takes out the ECU which puts the sled into a lean state which often takes out the motor as well. You should at least relocate the capacitor from on top of the regulator so it can cool. There is a thread on that too. Some have suggested that it is just a grounding issue.

Is the capacitor the thing wrapped in the black rubber bag thing under the console/headlight?

The capacitor is located under the spare belt cover above the clutches and is mounted on top of the voltage regulator. Has two wires coming out of it, red and brown.

Just as Lognomore stated. Black box with 2 mounting tabs. Located above the voltage regulator. Tends to trap the heat from the voltage regulator. I mounted mine above the shock tower.
