why was the poo blowing up from 08-10?
And have they solved it or will it still be a problem?

I would like to reply to this but snowest would delete like some of my other post. Leave it to little r&d and low sled sales.

1: The "700 pistons" which they put in the 800 cylinders rattling around untill the cylinder skirts fall off, (not actually 700 pistons, just very, very small)
2: The EPA-laboratory compliant, but not reality compliant, fuel and ignition mapping forcing the 600cc class powered 800 to run at WOT for minutes at a time so the rider wont have to explain why he cant follow the pace of the utility sleds......

To answer the question at hand...Most of the problems were due to a lean mid-range. This was because of EPA regulations, and polaris had to make the mid-range too lean. So if you were a trail cruiser or a guy that cruised at half throttle, and didn't vary throttle position, you burned down. Alot of guys used the powercommander and fixed this issue. The 2010update will help. This is what I know, I'm sure there is more info out there from the polaris guru's.

ya same here the people who i rode with that rode full throttle most the day and who didnt stay in the midrange had no issues at all the people that cruised the trails and rode the mid range were the ones that had problems. yes the power commander helped great and the 10 update i think they got it figured out for 2011 tho. i hope

2011....yeah they figured out how to keep them together but make even less power than last years dog! BTW, i am pro Polaris, but am going to let my snowcheck go back until I see more.

motor

From what I have seen the original piston is a single ring piston. One of the purposes of the rings are to distribute heat, but with only one ring only have of the heat can be dissipated, making more heat enter the piston making it expand. Even tho the clearances were large they were not large enough for the piston, resulting in scuffing the front of the piston on the stroke upward. Putting the two ring piston back in and with the new dome to keep heat from entering the piston I bet there will be no problems with the up date or the new motor.

Many people have put on tons of miles with ZERO issues. We had 5 Dragons/Assaults in my family (3 Dragon 800's, 1 Dragon 700 and 1 Assault 800). Not ONE of them had any issue with blowing up. Lots of miles, lots of hard riding. I am convinced it is a dealer setup issue.

Find a good dealer.

I heard it was midrange mapping...and keeping the electronics cooler as well.

Those have both changed for 2011...hopefully for Polaris it's the fix. Time will tell.

engine problems

The reason the problem showed up more at lower elevation is because there's "more" air at lower elevation, which results in higher compression, which results in more heat. The only thing my 08 D8 ever burned up riding in the mountains was the voltage regulator and ECU (luckily, covered by free extended warranty).

It happen up high also!

I was one of the unlucky ones. I had 500 miles on my sled 2008 dragon 800 and it decided to go boom! Here is the story always ran awesome with zero problems. Went for a ride towards the end of winter. Trail starts at about 8000. Temp was about 20 degrees F. Pulled the sleds out of the trailer and let them run to warm up while we got dressed. Sled was warm at about 125f and ready to ride. Started up the trail and and it ran fine for about 1000 feet. Just going easy on it and all of a sudden it wouldn't run. Had to give it almost full throttle to keep it running. Stop and it died. Tried pulling it and it would start then bog and die. Noticed metal coming out the exhaust and it smell like fuel really bad. Looked under the sled and fuel was leaking like crazy. Figured it was toasted and towed it back to the trailer. Rider over! Got home and looked and noticed a hole on the underside of the case where fuel was leaking. Took it to Polaris dealer to see what they said. He pulled it apart and showed me one of the skirts on my piston broke off. It was shoved through the bottom of the case. It took out almost everything on my motor. Fuel injectors, reeds, cranks, rods, case, head, cylinder. It was 3900.00 to repair but it was still under warranty. Wew! New engine and ran great until the voltage reg went out and took out the ecu. Since then it has ran good. I was told they got a bad batch of pistons causing them to break in two. The dealer showed me my pistons and the wash look great. I asked him if anyone else has had the problem and he point to a line of dragons waiting for parts to repair their motors. The other piston looked good also and no signs of a lean condition. The piston was just missing a part of it the size of a quarter. Rode it for 500 miles with no problems then I got another new top end when they recalled it to update to 2010 specs. Still like my sled and I am happy with it even though I have had to tow it a few times. (2)

A lot of it was dealer setup issue. On my 2009 assault the oil pump was never ajusted. It wasnt even getting oil till 6000 rpms. Also if the tps isnt right on it will affect your fuel delivery.Bad electronics was another issue.I have 2010 assault that was setup right and gone threw by someone that knows what there doing and it rips.

I would have to disagree with you. My sled was from Tri-City which is pretty up on "setting up" sleds. Mine blew up because my piston failed along with numerous others sleds from Tri-City. If it were a dealer problem then all of those same sleds that were repaired by Tri-City would still be having the same problems. Speaking with Tri-City since the update they have not had one sled with the same problem.

Well.. out here in the northeast,, you don't want to go riding with someone on a polaris efi sled,,, you end up towing them home.

just got another 08 in the shop, lean burndown, just like the others..
this ones on its 4th rebuild with 844 miles on her.
dealers ( more than one ) have been trying all that polaris has to repair this issue..

You can't blame it on EPA regs,, THE OEM knows what will cost them to lose customers and what will not..By blaming the epa it takes the focus off poor design and puts on the poiticians..badd deal..

there was a time young fellows when Polaris was THE sled,, but that was 22 years ago....

its a bummer for sure but at least with a tuner THE END USER can fix the manufactures pigheadedness..

Interesting topic.... the 8's can't meet emissions, they are lean in the mid range out of the box. 2011 fix is lower compression = 146hp. The motor will hold together but cat and doo 800's @ 160hp many poo snowcheckers might be dissappointed with the power. The lightweight chassis will help and if the motor don't blow up it might be a good trade off. It is do or die year for polaris IMO.
I have 2 -700 dragons and would like to upgrade to the 8's. I hope all the problems are in the past.

i have burned mine down three times but love the sled still. the dealer has been great in helping solve any problems and ive always been able to at least get out. no complaints abut polaris here and my dad is antsy to pick up his pro!
