"...someone took 2X4's and banged the underside of the roof..."

So the roof is full of dents now? And why would someone stand under that roof and hit it with a 2X4 while all that snow is buckling the building?

Yup...the roof is full of dents now. I don't know why someone would think of that method...sure it got the snow off but now it looks like crap. It's too bad.

Avalanche Course

Hey, anyone interested in the P.G. area in taking an avalanche AST 1 Class & Field session in Valemount Saturday April 18th, & Sunday April 19th? They need at least 24 students for the course to run.....
They are offering discounts for groups registering 6 or more, and have even extended the discounts to club members....so $294 PP/with discount. In light of all the avalanche fatalities this season I would think that more and more people would want to become better educated in the mountains!!
More info on this course and registration forms:

Thanks 'somefear' for posting this class. Here are some of the details.

The class in Chetwynd went well! A few of the comments:

Lori/Randy, Just a quick note to say thanks for the info/knowledge that you crammed into us! (l.o.l). The classroom & field training made it "alot" easier to break down/understand the info on the avalanche bulletins. Beacon & recovery training was great! It really stressed the importance of communication, proper utilization of the tools at your disposal, and what you can do in a relatively short time frame if working together. Warren had a great idea to get the guys that didn't come to do beacon/recovery practice, (ie: poker style format). We still got razzed for "wasting a weekend" in their minds, but I simply responded saying that I valued their lives more than the monies/time invested. They usually then are dumbfounded and ask, "what did you learn"? I then respond by saying if I were to get buried in an avalanche & you were there with your current knowledge, I would be dead! That got their attention! Glen M., March 31, 2009

During the Chetwynd field day, we completed many skills that were learned at the classroom session. Seeing the snow pack in the pit we dug was interesting. Burying the bags with the beacons was another success. I always wondered what it would feel like to probe, and find something under the snow rather than just ground. Splitting into 2 teams at the end of the day was the greatest! You now may think at this point in time that you think you know how to do everything and work it all...that all changes when you go under pressure. Being timed i think was a good thing because it makes you aware that if they were real people that time is passing.... Crystal M. March 31, 2009

Oh no problem.....if a little bit of awareness is possible it can save lives!! We are signed up officially for your class in Valemount, I'm sure hoping you get the numbers to put the class on!! You're darned rights it's worth wasting a good riding day to take it.....after all a good riding day isn't very good when you're dead. I would like to see the day when they make this course MANDATORY....just like a boating course.

This area is still one of the only open areas in that range but half is closed off so watch where you go. The burn is also open and I think everything else is closed. There was a map at the trail head to go up 4k but it has been there for years showing the closed off section.

;) I see... thought you might have been on the "wrong" side....ya know-north of vancouver and west of the center of the universe(toronto....not!)lol:D

How was it this weekend, is the trail up getting pretty bad?

We were out Saturday. Trail was still pretty good, just a little rough past the Pass Lk. turnoff towards the Burn. Everything is pretty pounded down on the hills, not much fresh snow. Conditions are still pretty good, you can practically go anywhere. Figure there is still a few weeks of riding out there!!:D

Pics of April 18th Torpy

Here's some pics from yesterday's ride. Oh.....if anyone knows who's track is left up in one of the last bowls up the Burn, can you please let them know they should pack it out!! Hate seeing chit like that left behind. Gives us all a bad name. Also saw sledders in the closed areas, either they aren't aware of the closures or are ignoring them.....

My biggest pet peeve is people that leave blown belts laying around:mad: You can pack a spare in why can't you pack chunks out? But a track, Come on guy's I have 3 feet of tunnel behind my seat that I'm sure that it would fit on. You must have brought a new one in some how why can't you take the old one out:mad:

WTF!:mad:why would anyone cut off a maverick track!?!not to mention being additionally fu-ggin retarded and leave it behind?:confused:you gotta take it all apart to change it out anyways ....:face-icon-small-dissheesh!obviously some-one with more $$ than brains:(

I think we are heading up Sat for 1 last ride, hopefully it isnt to bad going up the burn, and with the rain I hope there is a trail left.

You won't have to worry....there is still lots of snow. There is WAY more this year than last year at this time. Don't forget that when it rains here, it is snowing up at higher elevations. You should have some fresh on the weekend up top. We are planning a trip for May 9/10 weekend and probably will be heading out the following weekend too. The Burn was good, not even trenched at all, and the snow was set up so you don't have to follow the trail up, you can boondock around the stumps for fun on the way up!! The parking lot is thawed out but if you don't mind getting a little dirt on your sled, the trail will still be holding out for some time to come yet. Have fun on your ride and don't forget to post your ride here when you get back...pics would be nice too!!:D

did anyone else catch the article on the bridge improvements for the walker forest road/kakwa in the paper? maybe the snowmobile club should talk to shirly bond about the reduction of closures out in the torpy areas. if she's going to use the bridge etc as a political platform- maybe she might want to re open these areas- for use of the people who are supposed to be benifiting from the spending of the $700,000+ dollars!:confused:i just wish i had read this before her campaign people had called to ask for support:rolleyes:

Yeah, I saw the article and was a little stumped about what these politicians are trying to prove here. Isn't the Kakwa closed certain times of the year anyway? And why all the money for upgrades? So, let's see.....they close 90% of our riding areas at the Torpy and then turn around and try to make it look like they are promoting tourism (to the folks in the Robson Valley, mind you). I just don't get it....I also heard that the government is spending over a million of our tax dollars this year so they can patrol the McGregors with choppers so they can fine people that are in areas they shouldn't be in. I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes....every time we have gone out sledding at the Torpy we have seen a chopper flying low to check out what we are up to out there. And they were patrolling the Burn (which is, other than the Sande) the only OPEN area that we have. What gives? I guess all of us sledders should get together and question what the government is truly up to here. :(
