Ride Report 1/17/21
Out of Cloverland, they plowed to the parking lot (but it is a rough ride getting to it... hill is slick!!!!)
Snow blew in and the trails need to be groomed. Snow is hard as concrete and the long track sleds were on the verge of overheating and the hyfax was hot... won't ride again until there is a new snow. Five feet of snow at the marker.
At our house these dang things are like rabbits and keep multiplying!!! (my sled on the left.. Janet's on the right)
lessons continue...Kolbie is actually getting pretty good on hillclimbing and boondocking... but on the Expert she is spending more time on the snowmobile... not laying next to it... (I ended up on the XP as the girls went hillclimbing on the Experts)... anyone interested in a 2015 Summit X 165... Mac's Cycle is selling it
We went a little further south and enjoyed the poker run in Joseph, OR. Snow was pretty decent there in the higher elevations. None of that hard wet stuff we had locally. 10 of us down there and an Arctic Cat rider that would make CB.8 proud getting out of tree wells and off of steep banks. Beautiful bluebird day.
Mike coming over to me at lunch break and telling me it's time to check out some more country.
One of the stops.
Kolby shredding a hill.
Great view of the Council mountains area and McCall mountains in the background.
Road and snow park are plowed. Most trails are groomed. Almost five feet at the Misery marker, maybe 3-4 inches of new on top of concrete... burgers were great at Misery!
No riding for me this week. I decided 2 week ago that I would teach myself to weld aluminum. So the first thing you need to do that is to spend some money on a Tig welder. Oxarc was more than happy to take my money. 15 hours of youtube videos and some very unsuccessful practice I decide last weekend that I would build a bin to hold my oil in the trailer.
It turned out okay. So this week I practiced some more on some 2 x .125 inch wide bar cut into one inch chunks. I could get a butt weld that looked ok but I could not do a fillet weld for the life of me.
With Bill being down this year I am really looking to see some new country this year. I hate pulling my 25 trailer when I it is just me but I hated my old sled deck because I couldn’t pull the big trailer without taking it off.
So yesterday at I went to lewiston with the wife. I made a deal with her, I would do light remodels on the two bathrooms and I got to build a sled deck. So a trip to Home Depot and to Gateway Materials and I was off last night on two projects.
By the way did I mention that I have never completed a successful fillet weld which is about 70% of the welds needed for a sled deck. Well I have to tell you determination and 1100 dollars worth of aluminum is a great motivator. Needless to say the first fillet weld got a “D-“and may have go ground out and rewelded later. After that things got better. Mass and the gas pedal is your friend with aluminum. I am not stacking dimes yet but I have made some pretty welds and even don’t get anxious about fillet welds anymore. Needless to say I ran out of Argon tonight but got a good start on the deck and have to install the new vanity in the the one bathroom and it is done.
Ride Report 1/28/21
Kid and daughter rode out of Cloverland, got stuck getting into the snow park... they reported concrete until about 5800 feet of elevation then the concrete was covered by 4-6 inches of powder...
2-3 feet of new snow and mostly untracked today. Cloudy, sunny, foggy, and snowing heavily when we came in. The Cat made a cameo appearance today in trenches, upside down, in a tree, oh that was me. Don't tell Bill what it went through today. Adventure continues tomorrow.
1/31/21 Ride Report out of Cloverland
No where near the new snow like at Halfway, OR, but there was maybe 4-6 inches of powder on top of the five feet of concrete. Blue skies until the storm blew in... burgers were great at Misery.. trails are groomed. Granny allowed the brat to ride her Expert.
some untracked areas...
she wanted to learn to boon-dock... with mixed results...
Notice she has learned to communicate she needs help with hand signals...
Three days of the town full of snowmobilers and the SnoPark packed full we could still run untracked groomed trails before the storm to untracked areas with great views. The low clouds we had been encountering opened up to let us see the country one day.
The tight and steep technical canyon started taking its toll on us.
Time to get back to CB.8 powder land so we can ride with him as he dreams about where we were riding.
Ride Report 2/6/21
Cloverland. It is slick as **** going up the hill into the parking lot but we did it towing a coveered trailer without chains. Trails are groomed. A lot of trees are down on the Potlatch Road. Maybe 4-5 inches of new powder above 5800 feet, no change at the marker, still at 5 feet
Well I guess it is time to hit the hill again tomorrow. Been working hard on the deck and got my first COVID shot Tuesday. Still need to put the finishing touches on the ramp.
Had 6-8 inches of new snow during the week. Got a little warm and some rain made a crust along the highway but got better up higher. Had the 4th annual kids ride today at Tollgate. Had about 15 kids from 6-18 ride out to Bone Springs on Saturday.
Here was the group at the clubhouse for the start of the day.
Made it to Bone Springs warming shelter for lunch.
Then back to through clubhouse for t-shirts and awards.
Today was a snowbike day. Five bikes and 5 different kits. Wandered around through the trees for a few hours. Wore out the snowmobilers trying to ride along. Hopefully new snow comes.
Next Saturday plan to hit the vintage races in Sumpter with Plumnuts. Then later the next week trying to get the Arctic Cat dealer to go with us to Utah to check out the powder and maybe some setup tips for CB.8 so he can come ride with us.
Snow pretty much all day, but still not enough... fun day with CB8, one of his daughters, Mrs. PN, and Kolbie..
Riding with CB8 is always interesting...
cool he rode it out without help
a little carving... still need more snow
One of CB8's girls... fun when the kids come along... she rides well!
near disaster (but no pictures) climbing something steep and pulled the kill switch on an Expert... caught the sled before it got too far... and with CB 8's help got it turned around and down the hill for another run
Good snow, cold, and high avalanche danger makes us go do something that is safe and not get more than 1/8 mile from the trailer where we can warm up. Of course knowing that the Arctic Cat can't climb the deep snow you will probably be safe too.
My buddy's son wants to ride Dayton, this weekend. You rode with him a year ago at Pomeroy on the bucket run.
Just back from the Sumpter snow oval (oh crap the drive down on Friday night was a challenge!)... anyway turned the granddaughter loose and she did very well... one first and two seconds (in stock 440 classes)... she drove pretty aggressive all day!
She had the inside line and kept it in the final lap for a second place finish!
she is in second in the fourth turn and gets by in the straight away and won this class
rough track but she hung on... then helped load and unload the trailer and had a list of things she is doing to the sled in the morning..
special thanks to 541 Racing for the help on the sled
