Wow very interesting thread. As a political history major many moons ago in university I think this debate has gone on for years and still most people miss the jist of it. Name me one case where socialism has worked for any population, anywhere, anytime. Never has a socialist govt worked in a democratic state no matter which case you want to refer to. To remove the carrot at the end of the democratic stick is totally rubbish.
The self serving lazy people who embrace socialism are not grounded in fact and are totally ignorant of history. As humans we tend to want all the benefits of affluence and are not willing to make the sacrifices needed to accomplish this. The socialists who are attempting to run this continent are only ignorant and too lazy to better their own lot in life and expect that wealth and prosperity will magically fall from the sky.
The pioneers who laid the foundation of freedom for the citizens of this continent all made sacrifices and risked everything they had to create a wonderful world without the feudal trappings of the countries of origin they emigrated from. This continent was founded on hard work and sacrifice. The socialist movement is the most hypocritical think tank in the world. Change for no other reason than change itself is always a step backwards.
People who are willing to risk personal assets and take risks to better themselves need to have a reward for their efforts. Socialism removes the motivation from people and does not account for some of the most basic instincts of any human. Also history tells us that the only 2 remedies for economic turmoil as we are in now is war or prudent fiscal management. No other logical method exists and none ever will. History can be a great teacher as we tend to want to learn the lessons of our forefathers the hard way again and again.
For the first time in many years we have a fiscally responsible govt in my country and check out the value of our currency is today and look in 3 more months. Parity will happen this year the way the govt is devaluing your $. BTW he is failing miserably at every financial hurdle.
Good luck with that socialism idea, try Hugo Chavez on that 1 and ask the average Venezuelan what they think of socialism. Rant over will check back for the usual lame excuses. My conservative bros. will prevail as they always do!
