People tend to be less defensive and therefore less emotional when instead of point out differences in beliefs right away, you point out similarities. Just starting from a different angle, but then end point is always the same.. do get people to clearly define there views and reasons for them.
I would post a picture of conversing with you... but we all know what a box of rocks looks like.
