It happened much quicker than that. It was pretty messed up. All of the long time users were so bitter that they started going back and deleting all of their old posts that had useful information in them. The mods eventually had to lock everyone out of deleting old posts.

I've been around here since the old, old forum. Got a ton of great info, shared my school of hard knocks advice and met some awesome people who have become lifelong friends.

Here's the problems I see:

I understand there's some cost involved to Harris and Snowest and can appreciate that fact. The issue is, there's hundreds of other free forums out there that are this size or larger and make a go of it on advertising. Making it a pay site is going to drive away people, that showed up here in the first place, the same way most of us did. Those driven away people, are taking away the NUMBER ONE commodity that this forum needs. That's individual knowledge. Sure, some don't offer much and are here to just jack around, but you'll get that on any forum and they can be ignored. Don't drive away that possible knowledge with a trivial fee. Look at your advertising / ad policies instead.

The second part, was this forum was never broken to start with. For some strange reason, some Johnny-Come-Lately showed up and decided changes were needed. Were they? I didn't think so, and many will echo this as well. I'm reading all of this about a bunch of fancy features and whatnot. It's not necessary. The second part of this, is being told "oh, there's some big industry players that could be convinced to join if we go pay site." I call complete bull-crap on that. There already are some on here.

Anyway, to end my rant, don't fix what isn't broken. It's not too late to change things back. Going too far the other way could kill it altogether...

The magazine is always looking for excellent technical writers.

Could we pay our money to contribute articles to the Mag too?

Beel's pretty much nails it. And it is what I've been trying in futility to express all along maybe I didn't word it right but that's exactly what I've been trying to get across.

I find it interesting that Darrell Harris sells Harris Publishing to his two sons and since then things go in a very different direction. I guess the two boys need to pay that monthly loan payment along with their high mortgages and large car payments...gotta keep up with the Jones's ya know! hahaha

I have met a lot of good friends on here...life long friends...for example, Sunridge Sledhead, Idaho Slim, CoyoteGirl, sledchick, Idpwdagrl, SnoJo, Kevco, Mtm7, Super B, Ski-Doo Junkie, Griz....I am sure I have missed some and I apologize. I will forever be grateful for linking me with these great people. This is the ONLY reason I will consider staying on this forum....because of the great people I have met on here. If I stay it will have NOTHING to do with these so-called services you provide.

Another question...is Greg Manwaring in charge of the advertising on this site? I know he is in charge of the magazine's advertising. Gee...you might be wondering how I know so much about the inner-workings of SW...LMAO.

well the online and printed subscriptions are great and the membership fee will keep out the trolls and that does make it worth if for me but on the downside i think many of these other new features such as chat and video to be useless and not worth payin for cause many will not need or want to use these features. I come on here to find info about sledding, learn whats new and chat it up with other members about the sport. It seems like many of the new features are going to turn this forum into something like facebook. to me the idea of paying for facebook sounds absolutley retarded.

Every time SnoWest makes a change to the forums - people threaten to leave in droves and predict the demise of the site.

Personally, having tried (in futility) to moderate the influx of dill-holes on this site for a few years, I don't think it would be tragic at all to see most of the man-boys leave. It is seriously almost a full time job to babysit this joint. You cut off one of Medusa's heads and another moron grows back in its place. And there are more than a few habitual morons.

But I'm sure they'll all be back when their favorite {insert forum created because SnoWest sucks} dies due to lack of activity or implodes from douchebaggery.

I have been a member of snowest since 2002 but I was a lurker since back in 99 when things where very simple here. I have no problem paying 10 bucks for this but are there any chance I can get the rest of my post back?wtf?

I am gonna paste this here..its a remark I made to a post by Himark..
Himak...as of now..I am taking a wait and see attitude....but I would hope that harris publishing...christopher, big darrin, and all of our mods on here would hear what so many on here are saying...1..its not the money....2.. most....far more then I think snowest wants to admit...dont like the new toys or the new layout on here...3... We want mods with self control.... and fairness.........Humor those on here..do an official poll service of all members...allowing polls for everything from layout, content, modules, to acceptable and non aceptable mods...let the majority of members have a real say in this forum....If snowest really want this forum to grow..to be the best sled site on the planet....listen to what the majority of the members want.........do it just as christopher is doing the open letter...except do it as a set of polls, listing every conceivable complaint that has been brought to light recently.. one thing I think that may help is for mods to have to have 2 in agreement before a post/thread can be deleted/censored/or modified..this way no one allows either personal or business interest to affect post/threads..it would require 2 mods to disturb a thread/post other then for moving it to its proper place in the forum....some of the current toys that have been added I doubt many members even use..but it does sound like some very good ones are coming... why cant we have a subforum for the next 6 months that is nothing but polls on everything to do with snowest forum..bring out the changes, new toys , new ideas and allow members to use and experience them and vote..on what they want..at the end of the 6 months..tally the results..majority wins..the majority of the members will have spoken...and overall it should do more to bring peace and contentment then anything else will...........I dont know...just an idea.......

This is exactly what needs to happen in order for this site to have a snowballs chance in he11 of surviving.

Iif they cant make money off current advertising than eventually they are going to go SOUTH anyway you look at it...sure $10 is nothing for the info we get from this site but it just one more fee that gets imposed cause someonelse thinks its a good idea and before you know it its not $10 anymore ....ill stay and i hope the guys that really know their stuff stay.
this is a sport where guys that have spent the time on the hill to tune dont like to just give info out so to have a place were so many do give it out freely is rare now we are asking those that give the info out to pay to give it.. to me it just dosent seem like it going to take long to go bust......

As a business owner that has to pay for bandwith, I fully understand this. Servers and hosts do not work for free. Personally, no issue here with paying for the best of all options. Even 3 years is cheaper than taking my family to dinner. I paid a lot more for a lifetime membership on ty, of course I did get a hat, shirt and sweatshirt with that (lmao). Count me in, I will be glad to pay some money for the benefit of this forum.
