Sledding and Alcohol?

ridehard1212 and wheel line (or whatever your name is).... I am not a tough guy. however i hate drinking I watched my step dad die in front of my eyes because of drinking as well as one of my best friends.... so yea if I see a guy totally trashed putting myself or my friends/family at risk I have no problem losing his keys in the powder for him....... there is a time and a place for drinking in excess of a couple beers. Out on the trails isnt the place and I have no problem with stopping it any way I feel I want to stop it. If I get punched for it so be it. Chances are while the drunk guys are busy trying to stumble around and punch me I just saved someones elses life because those idiots were tryin to hit me back rather than plowing someone at 70mph.......

Mule:
So I've read that you deal with this for a living. Maybe in a stressful panic situation a beer or two might calm a person down and enable them to do the right thing in a calmer manner. You're an expert. lets hear it.

I don't buy it. Being calm and able to deal with an emergency isn't something that you'll gain by drinking. I haven't seen an EMT/Firefighter/dispatcher/bomb tech/what-have-you taking a swig of alcohol to "calm down" in an emergency situation; and there's a reason for that. E-prep is more than just having the right equipment; having the knowledge to use the equipment and the attitude to block the "panic" that comes with being put in a situation like that. Talk to anyone in em-comm/disaster communication, that's probably the best example I can think of.

Also, for the record. I don't deal with offenders, judges, courts, lawyers, magistrates, or POs. The products I design and work with measures and logs the traces of ethanol that makes its way through the bloodstream, into the water, and out the skin in the form of insensible perspiration. The fundamental principle is how alcohol is introduced into and removed from the human body. Absorbtion, elimination, widmark formula, molarity, density.... that's the properties I'm most familiar with. Mental effects such as what receptors the ethanol affects in the brain via the bloodstream I'm not very familiar nor concerned with, as that has negligible effect on our product.

I usually start the day off with an 8ball of coke, then after about 20 minutes I snort a hefty line of crank, go steal some tools, tires, some useless crap like window signs, Obama/biden lawn signs (burn em to keep warm) and whatever else I can get my hands on to sell enough for more fixes and gas money for the sleds, (which is usually alot since I average about a 3 day straight runner of stealing stuff) Hell I even steal other peoples sleds then crash those so it doesnt matter and just when I think im starting to come down off that nice wide eyed high I shoot a nice full siringe of heroin and its off to the races for mattymac (once agin!) WHOO HOOOOO!!!!!!
you sir are my hero the forum should have been over after that comment haha

i usually find that smoking a little meth right before a trip helps me reach my full potential. i love wrecking hard and not even remembering it! usually about half way through the day i come down off my meth trip so i pop an oxy or 2. those keep you messed up. sometimes thats not enough and i go to a new level. i take some codine and cherry robitussin mixed with juice. that will really mess you up. but usually you still see straight after that so i eat some mushrooms. they make you see happy things. well of course this isnt enough so i take the G.H.B. pill that i was gonna use on that random girl at the bar last night and i pop that. it usually knocks you out for a while.....but then you wake up again so its time for something better. by this time i usually want to start thinking again so il inject a decent amount of heroin and throw on a morphine patch. that really makes all your problems go away! about that time you realize your handgun "petey the pistol" is saying "if you squeeze me i make bad people go away". thats how i have fun on my snowmachine trips!

It depends on who I'm with. If I'm with the FIL we will almost always have 1 or two "slushies" (shot of whiskey with some snow mixed in) as a toast to the day then quit till we get home. Those are usually the casual, mostly trail burning rides. If I'm riding with my buddies, we are always too busy making fun of each other and hitting each others kill switches to worry about a toast.

I wouldn't tolerate someone who packs a flask or beer with them. When I ride, I depend on the people riding with me to be able to respond to an emergency with a clear head. I know that they can depend on me for that. I carry nothing but the essentials for survival in my pack and I don't have a lot of room left.

What important tools for survival get left out so somebody can pack alcohol for their ride?

I am not sure, but I would make a safe guess to say that if an individual hurt himself in the backcountry and required S&R to save him. He could possibly be in quite a bit of trouble, legally. I know that if you get caught drinking while operating a boat you are in big trouble. And I think that is a Federal charge, since it is on Federally controlled lands/water. You just have to ask yourself, "Is it really worth whatever consequences may happen to me"?

Yep, you're right; penalties on the water are much stiffer. The word Drunk is being abused on this thread. I don't think you're in big trouble anywhere for having "a" drink.

Well, it remainder fairly civil this year. Just remember that its the internet guys, don't harbour any bad feelings to anyone as they are just opinions.

I'm with the majority on this one, don't mind if guys have a beer or two (max), no biggie to me. I don't sled with heavy drinkers though, inevitably something happens, and like MS8P kid said, I just don't want that reputation association.

For myself, alcohol seems to dehydrate me too much, I would rather have water in my backpack to keep me hydrated as I always seem to be thirsty when sledding.

Typically we ride a good all day ride, coming back to the trailer we always seem to be running later than we wanted and usually we are on the throttle pretty good. Riding the mod sled I always seem to need my "A" game but especially at the end of the day when I am tired and doing upwards of 70 mph at dusk with no headlight, I need to have all my reflexes with me.
To me, the risks outweigh the rewards of drinking. Everyone is different though and this is not me being self-righteous, just my personal preference. I don't judge others, I just avoid riding with them if their actions make me uncomfortable.

me, i hardly stop long enough to wolf down a sandwich when sledding, to much fresh to chew. i do ride with other guys that drink and smoke weed, their choice. but when guys can hardly walk let alone ride thier sled it can be a little iffy. now after a day of sledding, thats a differant story.:beer;

Ditto!:beer;

My take on things:

1) A couple of beers or talking to Herb does not make you a drunk or a hazard.

2) If you are loaded on the hill then it is generally agreed upon you are an idiot.

It seems that many people can't tell the difference between use and abuse on this thread.

I believe if you believe that:

"I don't judge others who drink, but I am convinced if you do your either insecure or inmature."

then:

a) You can't spell
b) You have a sense of self-righteous superiority that probably drives your friends to drink.

go pick up the latest issue of SnowGoer and flip to page 34.. an article called Mixed Drink...check out what this guy has to say about the whole drinking and sledding thing:beer;:beer;

haha!! yeah.. you're welcome... this guy just says how on some trail signs show which places sever alcohol and how 80% of snowmobile accidents have alcohol involved.. i'm not gonna lie, i damn near lost a family member because of this.. if it wasn't for his brother using his gloves to clog the blood that was gushing out of his neck he wouldn't be here right now.. it's a serious deal but it also didn't help that a farmer had his electric fence 50 ft too far into the ditch.. but all because he blew over the limit the farmer wasn't liable.. bull**** if you ask me

like I said, this tell me a lot about you!!!:rolleyes:
An opinion is like A holes, everyone has one!!;)
I'll take self-rightousness over inmature or insecure any day. We all got have some negative attributes.[/QUOTE]

I ride with regularly with a group of about 10. We all believe that drinking is fine when you're off the sleds for the evening. We go back to the sno-park, have snacks and drinks. Then into our campers/motorhomes for a good night sleep and then back on the sleds in the morning.:)
