price to pay to ride in wyoming

Commercial stickers are now $75 per sled. Most rental places have closed shop around the Snowies. Not much profit in rentals unless you have connections when buying parts and sleds and still you have to keep your sleds busy the whole season or it's not worth it. I don't have a problem paying more for normal increases in operating costs but don't like paying for poor management and theft.

Agree, but it is Time to move on, the theft has been delt with and there is new management. Let's give them a chance!

So why such a big increase for commercial? I'm sure Albany and Snowy Range Rentals won't be too happy.

And again, what about economic impact for the towns surrounding the Snowies?

We dont pay state income tax here. You can increase it buy $100 and I would be ok. Just remember you need mangement. Even if they arent good you can change that. Just keep your heads up and we will winl Why does everyone worrie about $10 when they spend $1000 to get here? Just dont drink for a night.

Agreed pretty sure we can all handle the 40 bucks to play in our own state... From what I seen last year the rental business is doing pretty good, I seen pick up loads of people with no sleds that all rented in the bighorns.

That goes without saying, that all the rental places in the state are not happy.
It was the legislative committee that did the big price increase. WSSA and the state trails proposed a 25$ increase from 75 to 100. That's is one that will hurt the little guys, but may not the others. My guess is the committee looked at it like they are making money on the trail systems, let them carry more of the load.

There is a great article in the WSSA Wrangler by Kim Rapp that outlines all of it. If you get a chance have a look at it in the latest issue.

Dont feel sorry for the rental shops. They make a KILLING on rental sleds. They charge 200-250 a day to rent a mountain sled and those sleds get less then 50 miles a day put on them. Here is the link to the ski-doo / polaris dealer in Cooke City http://www.cookecityexxon.com/showcaseproductlist.htm

These sleds have 1500-2000+ miles on them, all are 2012's and they are a DEALER! they paid cost for them and are still asking 8000-9200 for these sleds. So, do a little math here. 2,000 miles / 50 miles a day = 40 days of rental x 225.00 per day ==== 9,000 !!!!!! They still have 20 sleds for sale from last winter, On those 20 sleds alone they made 180,000.00 PLUS add in all the money they got out of people for damage to these sleds.

So YES!!!! they can pay more for trail passes for them. Eric

Agreed there is money to be made in renting sleds if the winters are good. The fee for commercial sleds can be covered in less then one rental.

I come and ride in Wyoming at least once a year for a 3day weekend or so, would like to come more but we all know how that goes. While I am sure I can afford the cost increase it does suck. I also go and ride in Idaho and Montana and one big concern I have is once one state raises the fees all the others follow suite. So for me to ride in all three states plus the state I am from it is getting to be a very large bill that just a few years ago I did not have to pay. To ride in all these states it costs about $140 or so, raise up Wyoming to 55 and it goes to $170. Some of my kids are getting close to being able to ride with me and then I think this will be a problem. For me to have to pay this for one sled is not a big deal, times that by 2 or 4 sleds and yes this will not allow me to come to the state of Wyoming with my family, 2 sleds = $340, 4 sleds = $680 OUCH. I really enjoy spending time with my family but with fuel and the price of all the little things it seems to be getting out of hand.

Another thing that I wonder about is when it is said that grooming will keep the trails open? I would like to know if this is indeed true. I believe that once they decide to close an area it will be closed. And even if they did say well it has a groomed trail so we need to keep it open, they would just tell you to stay on the trail or face a fine. So yes the groomed trail would be open but the fun off trail riding would be closed. Just look at how many areas have been closed that had nice roads and trail systems for summer time use, those roads seemed to not help keep them open. I am not saying we should stop grooming I just don't know if it would keep the area open the way we may think it will. Also I am very much against having more fish cops come around and give you a hard time. It just takes the fun out of it. I have had better experiences with the cops in Wyoming but the ones in Utah are a joke and I would hate Wyoming to get to that point. It really is something to have a great day of riding only to be stopped at a check point and harassed by 10 fish cops for just nit picky things and this does happen in Utah. So to say you want more enforcement? Be careful what you ask for. I will say I do love your state!!!:thumb::thumb:

And before I get attacked by all you guys who travel a lot longer distance then me I know you pay way more to come and enjoy our great western states. And I can not cut out drinking as I already choose to not do that. I just hate seeing things go up so much in cost that I can not enjoy the fun things i did with my family when I was a kid.

That's a tough one to call...
I know of one area int he northern part of the state that there is a push to make it wilderness. From what I have been told the trail system is in the way of that happening. Not saying it will or won't happen, just saying that the trail system is one of the obstacles in the way of that happening. It is along the same lines that if we remove a trail from the map, we never will get it back due to all the new rules and regulations. Without the trail, it is that much easier to say off limits.

WyoRMK, Res is $40 and Non-Res is $55? Tell the State they should give $5 of every non-res and commercial sticker to S&R. :face-icon-small-win
So, is the state gas tax match going to go up to meet the new sticker cost or will it stay the same?

Actually the $1 from the tags and hunting license does make a difference, so please keep adding the $1. :face-icon-small-coo

I am sure we don't want to mess with the state gas tax equation. The highway department is already eye every penny they think they can get their hands on. Opening that can of worms may cost us more.
From what I understand the only think that controls the amount the program gets if the number of tags sold, it does not depend on the price of the tag!

With so much money to be made in the rental business I can't believe everybody isn't renting sleds. I wonder why so many people quit doing it when they are making so much money?

Thats all you got to say about it Chris? I hope your tonge isnt bleeding from biting it so hard!

Maybe if you didnt try renting out non-current worn out junk and offered it to more then just the customers staying in your cabins you would have made money at it? Just a thought. Eric

The mountain could use another rental place I'm sure you could make tons of money. Please come and show me how it's done I'm sure you could do much better than I ever did please I crave knowledge. It's easy to talk about all the things you think you can do on the net but until you can put your money where you mouth is it doesn't mean a whole lot!

I have been reading posts on here about prices going up but really what have any of us bought that has to do with rec last year that has not gone up in price this year
I am from the midwest and visit as much as i can to wyo to enjoy sledding along with my group of usually 6 and we all will spend 500 to 600 a trip each time a piece would not trade it for anything i guess what i saying is if the price was 100 for the year to ride out there i would pay that anything i can do to keep the trails open and groomed
I bet i can speak for alot of people when i say im tired of things going up in price!!!!

what price are we willing to pay for sled tags in our riding areas?$30?$40?$50?$60?$70?$80?$90?$100?

I'll pay more for a permit but it's hard to put a number on it. My little experience comes from riding in the Snowy Range for the last few years. Here is my 2 cents at flatlander value.
My group came from out of state to Centennial 6 times in 2012 and pumped money directly into the local economy for lodging, fuel, breakfast, supper, etc...........you're welcome to those who don't like snowmobilers. Most of the people I've encountered are very friendly! We're passionate about the sport and I will continue to come for the beauty of Wyoming and pay for a trail permit on these conditions:
1) Don't let the sport die. I think we will look silly worrying about another $10-30 for a permit if the riding areas ever get shut down completely. I think of it as a privilege that can be taken away by the right government officials and rulings someday.
2) Reduce the costs that are the reason for the permit increase. Easier to say than do but something has to give. Groom the main traffic trails/trailheads frequently and the other trails less frequently to save fuel, time, inputs. If grooming is the expensive part, just focus on the spots that really need it and focus on better marking in the other areas. Posting maps at intersections and trailheads is very helpful for noobs.

What happens if grooming and marking ever goes away completely? Possibly more S&R missions? I don't know but we are riding in the mountains after all. Mother nature is a tough gal. People just have to get smarter with safety and education before going out. Just don't let the riding areas get shut down! To me that means keep the trail systems open and relevant to the argument.

I have a feeling that you can't be taught much. Just ask you!

newmy always has something to say about something he's never done and about someone he's never met. I have no doubt newmy and srx could make every business in the Snowies run like a top if they chose after all their own businesses are probably booming. Don't let me discourage you from buying a business here and show me how right you are.
