packin' a gun while riding

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
I don't care if you all pack while riding, as long as you do it legally and responsibly.

I don't feel the need to pack, so I don't. Its a personal choice and I wouldn't force my personal opinion on anyone else.

If you like to "shoot chiz up" while riding I ask you think about it before you shoot that big tree. It'll have metal in it and get culled at the mill causing the owner and loggers to loose money on it.

I don't mind getting flamed in a post, but if you are going to give me bad rep have the BALLS to leave your name!!!

if you gave me bad rep, please reread my previous post then reply.. and use SPELLCHECK!:)

Any of you guys ever heard of the 21 foot rule? Basically the 21-Foot Rule, when accurately stated, says that in the time it takes the average officer to recognize a threat, draw his sidearm and fire 2 rounds at center mass, an average subject charging at the officer with an edged weapon can cover a distance of 21 feet. Thus, when dealing with an edged-weapon wielder at anything less than 21 feet you need to have your gun out and ready to shoot before he starts rushing you or else you risk being set upon and injured or killed before you can draw your sidearm and effectively defeat the attack.

Now these are trained law enforcement officers taking that long to unholster a weapon and shoot a bad guy. Not a regular guy out sledding who has to dig for a weapon with gloves on under a few layers of clothing to defend themselves. Many LEO's say that 30 feet is a more resonable distance. I would assume a bear or mountain lion could close the gap even faster than your run of the mill bad guy. Using deadly force against an animal is one thing, but using deadly force against a human is another. Some of the situations guys have talked about would cause them lots of prison time if they shot someone.

Bring all the firearms you want with you. It really doesn't matter to me.

That 21 foot rule is total BS, so many varibles. It may be 21 for one person and 40 foot for another person or maybe zero feet for some officers. just because the assailant is upon you doesn't mean its over ;) "hey I ran 21 foot and cut your arm before you shot me dead, I WIN!!!"

your post does have many valid pionts though, my brother is a SEAR officer in the air force, he doesn't pack that SW .460 to keep the bears off himself as he figures he wouldn't have time in the Alaska bush to draw and defend himself, he packs it to shoot a bear that is attacking someone else.

a lot of people seem to be stating the fact of actually shooting SOMETHING... when there is no real need. for instance the moose on the trail that a lot of people have stated seeing, firing a round 20 feet away into the ground is going to make the moose run for its life even though it is in no real danger. deadly or even wounding force is not needed, heck some animals will run when you chamber a round :D

Naive? Spare me. I'm sure there's felons everywhere, hell, I might have been BS'ing with them at the bottom of a hill on any given day. Unless they're committing a felony against me, how would I know, and what am I going to do about it? You tell me, what should a person do about?

What is the non-law enforcement person going to do, confront a potentially armed felon and make a citizen's arrest?

If I come down the hill and some clown is breaking into my rig, I call the cops, take down any info I can to help them out, and then call to their attention that they're breaking into my rig. Most likely they make like trees and leave, worst case scenario they're like some of the gun happy sledders out there and I'm staring down a gun, I'm not sure how having my own gun makes that situation any better, but to each his own I guess...

I'm really surprised that a law enforcement officer would come on a public forum and suggest that the public take the law into their own hands...

Waxy

Well I guess that is the vast difference between you and I! I prefer armed law abiding citizen's out there....it deters crime! I wish the mother in Boston was armed when she was carjacked....and that POS felon was dead instead of her as Ted Nugent puts it! I didn't suggest you take the law into your own hands. What do you think some criminal is gonna do when you catch him burglarizing your rig? Ya he is gonna let you sit there and watch him!!! haha I guarantee he would make a move on you. Hopefully you would get away on your sled in time. Yes, I prefer a civilian kill an armed criminal in a life threatening situation. When my sons are hold enough they will know what to do if someone breaks in our house! My significant other knows what to do.

You aren't sure how having your own gun would make that situation better? WOW! If my life or my family's lives are threatened by a lunatic with a firearm or any weapon that could kill...I pull the trigger my friend...law enforcement officer or citizen! You don't happen to be an Obama supporter? Are you one of those that wants to give home burglars more rights...let more people out on probation or parole?

I didn't suggest you stop a felony in progress...yes call the police, but like I said if my family or I become threatened with death I am emptying my magazine into someone or several people! Clear enough for you?

...and yes as a law enforcement officer I encourage law abiding citizen's to protect themselves against great bodily harm with a firearm! Clear enough again? ....and yes you are much more naive than I EVER imagined! ....wait let me add ignorant too. .....and I could careless if you go down to your local shooting club and drink tea as you shoot skeet or get your high paid guide to get you an elk.

Here ya go, Ted Nugent says it best!

I really feel bad for you. It seems like your cynicism comes from dealing with the worst of humanity on a daily basis. While you have encountered violent situations the reality is that many people will never encounter anything requiring the use of a firearm.

You need to be careful of your comments and what you suggest to others to do.

For example, "emptying a magazine." Prosecutors and Juries take into consideration how many shots you fired. As well you cannot shoot someone in the back, because imminent threat of danger does not exist when someone is running away from you.

With the exception of Texas, which distorted the premise of self defense to ridiculous, you cannot shoot and kill someone because they are taking your property and you will go to jail for a long time.

By the way, did you ever take the psych test for LE? Wondering how you scored at the time you entered LE. Wonder how you would score now.

Anyone can legally carry and I don't care, but they need to be careful about what you think that entitles you to do with it. I have seen total wusses grow a pair when packing. They need the fiearm to give them courage and that is a dangerous combo.

Is powder slut a cop?!?

Sounds like a real winner to me... haha empty a magazine into someone hey?

You're using your gun as protection, not as a murder weapon.
If someone was in our house ganking my stuff and threatened me, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot if I HAD a gun handy, but there's a line between self defence and attempted murder("EMPTYING a clip into someone")

laws are different here in Canada I guess... maybe other's dont see the point in busting into our igloo's, WHICH WE ALL LIVE IN.

I feel so comfortable knowing there's guys out there riding with a gun somewhere on them... other than a bear a cougar, blah blah blah, what's the need?

"hey, WE were highmaking here! KAPOOOWWWWW (or kapoowww times 8 in powder sluts case, but its ok, he's only protecting himself)

This thread is getting nuts.

People mentioned about confrontations and dangerous situations when riding when they wished they had a gun... So instead of being rational adults and talking out an issue or taking the high road and just drive away on your sled, you are gonna put your gun in someones face, or shoot them over a dispute?

And many have mentioned coming down to the parking lot and finding thieves stealing your rig and shooting them and or the truck to disable it. So you are gonna murder a thief for stealing your rig which insurance will cover anyway? A guy deserves to die for stealing a truck? I am all for paying the price for the crime you commit, but that is excessive.... Even in radical muslim countries they only cut off your hands. Call the cops, call your insurance company, go buy new ****.

And as for the big bad wildlife encounters, most times if you come across something, dangerous or not, you can just drive that same snowmobile you came there on to a different spot where the rabid pack of wolves is not near. I have never seen a newspaper article about, bears, cougars, wolves, yeti, etc, attacking someone on a moving snowmobile... I can just picture the conversation "I came around a corner and there was a pack of angry wolves." "Wow, what did you do?" " I had no choice but to pull out my gun and shoot them, I felt threatened." "Couldn't you just drive away since the sled was running?" "Well, ummm, uhhh, did I mention I had a gun...."

Most of these situations you guys mention do not require a gun, no matter how you want to justify it. Pulling a gun just escalates a situation 99% of the time.

And to make another point, when there is a thief and or thieves stealing someones rig in a parking lot, I am worried about my safety because of the guy unloading a handgun at a moving vehicle in a parking lot than a truck driving away.. Me and my families safety is at risk cause of the guy shooting in a public area. Hopefully you don't shoot me when I come over to tell you that you killed my kid with a stray bullet trying to stop a petty thief!

You guys want us to carry guns...........We get arrested for not covering offroad lights or not having enough tiedowns on our sleds I could only imagine if I had a colt 1911 strapped to my riser.

my dad made a holster for a guys harley last year. it went on the loop bar that protects your feet ( i cant remember the name for it) im sure if you got him some money and a pattern he could make ya one that would be pretty much snow proof

BYOB
I feel ya on the collateral damage part of the post but as far as your muslim comment your missing by a mile. If we actually chopped a hand off for stealing then we wouldn't have so many criminals to worry about. But as long as Liberal panty waste our allowed to breed in this country then there will always be enough of them vote stupid azz people into office that for some reason seem to think it would be to mean and might hurt the thieven bastages feelings if we actually punished them for their crimes. So as for me and mine we will protect ourselves in away that I know will work.

Last thing I would ever want to do is be put in a situation in which I was forced to protect myself with lethal force. But if it comes down to me and mine or the wankers who mean us harm well then I choose me.

As far as he goes why should I care. He willingly engaged in an act of violence against another person.
I can almost here it now at his trial (assuming he lived through it) ( I was only gonna scare him he had no right to shoot me, I mean he only caught me jackin his **** he worked his azz off for).
I look at it like if he's stupid enough to go at someone he doesn't know in a situation like a robbery in this country. Then he deserved the lead poisioning he got. Besides if he is that stupid I'm glad he bought it, atleast he won't be breeding any of his stupidness anymore. Now in Canada maybe he has a better chance of not taken two in chest, but then again he has an excuse for being stupid (to many safety meetings).

I remember reading a post about some guys helping out a random person who was messing around, and ripped his leg apart.
30 random people came up to do anything they could... Why can't all riders be like this?

How can it get THAT heated in the hills, that pieces need to be pulled out to show dominance?
WHY AREN'T PIPES, NITROUS, AND A TURBO DOMINANCE?!?!?

Stuff's is WAY different south of the boarder apparently:beer;

So my emptying my mag into a criminal makes me crazy....it was a comment taking way too literal brainiacs! I would much rather be "crazy" than complacent and ignorant. No I would not empty my mag unless it warranted it...meaning a meth head would not stop. I will always shoot two to the body and one to he head if I am facing a deadly threat...that is how I am trained to stop a deadly force. If it takes more because they won't stop then YES I will empty my mag if necessary....what, do you want me to stop someone by shooting them in the knee cap?!!! haha ...and WTF are you talking about shooting someone for taking property or shooting someone in the back....do you have ADHD? When did I ever bring that up!? Typical....people with your types of arguments consistently put words into others mouths or transpose some BS. No I would never shoot someone in the back UNLESS I knew that person would kill....meaning a terrorist, serial killer, or someone running with a important piece to a weapon of mass destruction (military training and common sense).

If I am insane and a "real winner" because I am passionate about this topic than thanks for the compliment! You can send this to my department as someone did 5 years ago when I posted on here that I thought some felon ***itive was a POS I was in pursuit of... guess what he was high on meth and almost killed a 5 year old boy in the back seat....none of us knew that poor little guy was in there. If I knew he was in there I would have used lethal force as soon as he hit my parked car and the pursuit began!

I owe no apologies to you or anyone. BYOB....who the hell said I would shoot someone for breaking in my truck...bad guys typically have weapons is my point...and in MANY circumstances they USE them!!! Got it....do I need to do sign language? I don't need to justify being old school. I am a hard hitter (not abusive for your translation, because I know your ignorance will run with that one) and that is how I will always be...if law enforcement doesn't like my type anymore than I am gone. Until then I am willing to do violence on others behaves to let them sleep peacefully at night....not saying I am a good man as my quote says below. I am just a man that believes passionately. ...and if I score crazy on a psych test now!?CHEERS! :beer;:beer;

...and yes the likely hood of meeting a bad guy that poses a deadly threat in the mountains is very slim....but it is a possibilty anywhere and anytime! I could give you several real life examples, however have you ever seen Cliffhanger or Deliverance!? haha

I guess i must be old school myself , i tend to agree with Mountian-Powder-Slut. I wonder why our friends north of the border dont like the idea of armed people in the back country. I like the idea of being able to protect myself . Not that i will ever need it , but if i do i will be very happy i was prepared.

I just got a new S&W M&P .45 , i really like to put rounds through it . I never like to be without it . Target practice is a good thing , i love to prefect my aim. I try to carry a few extra clips with me . The 45 is just to much fun to shoot.:D

I will not be a victim

I carry (legally) and have had training and am an excellent shot. Noone
knows when or where you might be in a situation beyond your control.
My dad was a cop for a lot of years and I learned a lot from him. I would
only pull the trigger if I felt my life or a loved ones life was truely in dire
straights. Other than those situations, you will go to jail..........
(yah, I know there may be others who disagree.) and you can GFY.

Thank you BROTHERS! Cheers Duvall and Dano! Good to know my kind of guys are still out there! ...and men with the balls to say something and not give a sh*t about being politically correct! ....and obviously I don't give a rats a$$ about being politically correct! Piss off liberals! This song is dedicated to you!! Especially to you Waxy, Mtbarr, and Knizer...or should I say Kaiser!

Yes, for many of the reasons listed on here. The wife and were greeted by 4 or 5 wolves in Petersville about 5-6 years back. I'm sure there are other AK riders on here that have encountered wolves at Pville. They didn't bother us, more curious than anything. Since then I've carried. You never know what you'll encounter that deep in the wilderness. Just makes sense to me. Never once removed from the holster while out riding though.

Did you at least run one over?....

If i lived in Alaska i probably wouldn't do that. Where i live....Lets just say you ain't going to find the carcass on the side of the trail but im doing my best to keep their population down while they slaughter our elk and hunting seasons(while MANY families suffer)
