packin' a gun while riding

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
So was this post about 1.-packing while sledding, or was it about 2.- defending yourself in general, or was about 3.-our beloved 2nd Amendment? Most likely it's all the above. If it is about #1 then I consider a firearm an essential part of any survival pack when in the woods, trails, or backcountry. I tend to be a little concerned about those who are shooting into tress. Unless they are 100% marksmen or it's a really big tree, that piece of lead will have to stop somewhere. Hopefully not in me or anyone else. By the way, I have yet to be attacked or accosted by renegade sledders but I was prepared I guess.

As for #2, Our right to defend our lives and the lives of our families is self evident and I couldn't agree more with Ted Nugent. I've loved Ted and his music for 35+ years now but I don't kidd myself. Ted is kind of out there. Ted is a hardcore rightwinger. I find myself alot closer to that side than the other but I still take him with a grain. It's guys like Ted that keep gun control advocates and politicians honest so I am thankful for him.

When it comes to defending myself or family against any threat, I wouldn't hesitate for a millisecond. Better judged by 12 than carried by 6(or maybe 8 in my case).

That being said, #3 - The 2nd Amendment should have been the first amendment because we can't defend any of the other amendments without it. Please remember that the original purpose of the Bill of Rights was to protect us from threats within, not from outside. Let me leave you with some thoughts sent to me by friends over the years concerning the 2nd. Thanks for reading my two cents.

Gun facts:

1. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.

2. A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

4. Gun control is not about guns; it's about control.

6. If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words.

7. "Free" men do not ask permission to bear arms.

8. If you don't know your rights you don't have any.

9. Those who trade liberty for security have neither.

10. The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights reserved.

11. What part of "shall not be infringed" do you not understand?

12. The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.

13. 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.

14. Guns only have two enemies: rust and politicians.

15. Know guns, know peace, know safety. No guns, no peace, no safety.

16. You don't shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive.

17. 911 - government sponsored Dial-a-Prayer.

18. Assault is a behavior, not a device.

19. Criminals love gun control -- it makes their jobs safer.

20. If guns cause crime, then matches cause arson.

21. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.

22. You only have the rights you are willing to fight for.

23. Enforce the "gun control laws" we ALREADY have, don't make more.

24. When you remove the people's right to bear arms, you create slaves.

25. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

26. "A government of the people, by the people, for the people..."

and finally-

THE 2ND AMENDMENT

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. (Waiting for attack)

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either... The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'

6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'

7. An unloaded gun is just a really expensive club.

8. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!
But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

Rochdog2112, an Excellent post.
Many valid points & comments to live by. No matter how it's worded there will be those that still don't get it. All that needs to be understood is that it is are right as Americans (at least for now).
Liberal be careful what you wish for!

Hey Togwotee9

Thanks for the kind words folks. By the way, Togwotee9, I just wanted to second your nomination of treekiller(the name says it all). I'll bet the voting was unanimous. What you said cracked me up! By the way, I ride an 08 M8 and I'm not very good yet so I'm easy to catch and I'll take that beer. Thanks.
P.S. I'll buy you a couple for that whole treekiller thing. If anyone should have gottren bad rep, it was him.

Nice post rockdog2112!

rockdog2112 ... I hope you don't mind but I copied your post and saved it as a word document ... that is one of the finest posts I've seen on SW! You sir, are a wise man and the beers are on me if we ever meet :beer;:beer;:beer;

You are welcomed to any part of it. I can only take credit for the top part which is my opinion that I have never had much problem expressing. Like I said in the post, many of those items were sent to me by friends and I saved for just a moment like this. A lot of guys a lot smarter than me came up with them but thank you.

You guys down south are lucky.

Hundreds of people get attacked every year by animals while sledding.

No-No... thousands.
It's true, I read it in the paper every day.
And psychos on the trail, yep. See em every ride up. take your gun because you will get shot if you don't...

and if someone tries to steal your sled,, ya shoot em... you won't be charged, he is the one who wasn't prepared for a gun fight, so it is his problem.

The only problem with a lot of people who own guns is, they don't know the laws pertaining to being a responsible gun owner. maybe it is from watching their favorite hero on television, I dunno.

I am glad in a way to live up here, our wildlife is usually frightened of humans. and everyone I meet up in the backcountry are friendly.

How are you packing it? Just bought an XD .40. My wife was going to let my kids get me a holster for Christmas but not sure which one to get. Any ideas for MX Mt. riding and snowmobiling?

Hay Sawyer, we have had wolf spottings now too. That's always fun with kids at the cabin.

sponges wrapped in bacon can help in this department! Just lay a few out in there general area.

Marcuso, I thought that your post was great and made some great points also. I don't think that all Americans or American sledders are hell bent on carrying a gun. I would guess that most don't.
I believe that it comes down to protecting a right that many have died fighting for here in the USA. A foundational cornerstone that many other countries have benefitted from and still do. You are right, it all comes down to being responsible. All rights come with great responsibility to be used correctly. EVERYBODY I have met in the back country is friendly- so far. I hope it stays that way. If it does not, I'm very glad that I have the right to protect myself if need be and I will. I dont't know the Canadian constitution but I know ours and I hope you have the same rights as us.

I"m into more the old school ( rat patrol ) mount a telascoping 50 cal. on the back tunel with my wife at the trigger! ( out of my way critters) lol.. thats a visual ...i do a derenger style 25 cal just if i spend the night i could have rabbit for dinner

that would be a cool sled for show at the next snow show ! two up gone wild!

I'd like to see somoene shoot a rabbit with a .25 cal pistol with an inch long barrel

you'd be better off stripping some wire somewhere and rigging up snares.

I've still yet to see a valid scenario for survival with a personal defence style weapon..

not that I give two chits about you carrying such, just talking about the survival aspects.

My flare gun weights oz's not lbs, and I gaurantee it'll attract more attention than a pistol.

So my emptying my mag into a criminal makes me crazy....it was a comment taking way too literal brainiacs! I would much rather be "crazy" than complacent and ignorant. No I would not empty my mag unless it warranted it...meaning a meth head would not stop. I will always shoot two to the body and one to he head if I am facing a deadly threat...that is how I am trained to stop a deadly force. If it takes more because they won't stop then YES I will empty my mag if necessary....what, do you want me to stop someone by shooting them in the knee cap?!!! haha ...and WTF are you talking about shooting someone for taking property or shooting someone in the back....do you have ADHD? When did I ever bring that up!? Typical....people with your types of arguments consistently put words into others mouths or transpose some BS. No I would never shoot someone in the back UNLESS I knew that person would kill....meaning a terrorist, serial killer, or someone running with a important piece to a weapon of mass destruction (military training and common sense).

If I am insane and a "real winner" because I am passionate about this topic than thanks for the compliment! You can send this to my department as someone did 5 years ago when I posted on here that I thought some felon ***itive was a POS I was in pursuit of... guess what he was high on meth and almost killed a 5 year old boy in the back seat....none of us knew that poor little guy was in there. If I knew he was in there I would have used lethal force as soon as he hit my parked car and the pursuit began!

I owe no apologies to you or anyone. BYOB....who the hell said I would shoot someone for breaking in my truck...bad guys typically have weapons is my point...and in MANY circumstances they USE them!!! Got it....do I need to do sign language? I don't need to justify being old school. I am a hard hitter (not abusive for your translation, because I know your ignorance will run with that one) and that is how I will always be...if law enforcement doesn't like my type anymore than I am gone. Until then I am willing to do violence on others behaves to let them sleep peacefully at night....not saying I am a good man as my quote says below. I am just a man that believes passionately. ...and if I score crazy on a psych test now!?CHEERS! :beer;:beer;

...and yes the likely hood of meeting a bad guy that poses a deadly threat in the mountains is very slim....but it is a possibilty anywhere and anytime! I could give you several real life examples, however have you ever seen Cliffhanger or Deliverance!? haha

I didn't say that you would shoot someone for breaking into a truck, nor did I imply it. There were some posts in the early pages about shooting at a vehicle to disable it and/or stop the thief. I am not cutting you down personally, just making a general point to things said earlier. And no, you don't need to do sign language, but I can see how you talk to people who have a difference of opinion.... classy. And I am not ignorant either, I have been around as well, I have seen things, and I just choose to handle things differently. To each their own but their are a lot of people who lean to your side on here that were able to respond with a little respect, not be a macho, condescending pr1ck...

Marcuso ... I personally, speaking only for myself, have no intention of using my pistol for any critter on the trail or "psycho" on the trail. The only time it'd ever come into play is for a life-threatening or survival situation, as a last resort. As a legal concealed carry citizen, I actually make a real effort to not let it be known that I carry ... it makes many uncomfortable and that is certainly not my intent. I carry while sledding for the same reason I carry anywhere else ... "better to have and not need than vice-versa"; same as any other survival tool I take with on the mountain. Not all of us "crazy, gun-toting, war-mongering, Rambo watching, shoot first-ask questions later" Americans are so eager to blast away at a moments notice ... I would be content knowing I never had to use my weapon against another.

x 2. That about sums it up.

I appreciate your sarcasm Marcuso...its been years since we have had a discussion huh!? I know everyone cannot live in your utopian world up there and most sledders cannot access your riding areas like they can here. I live an hour and a half away from one of the most popular sledding destinations in the country of the US, if not the most popular....Island Park. Yes, unfortunately criminals/violent individuals are also up there...I would much rather be be prepared than have the attitude you have. Yes, most people I meet while sledding are friendly....however not all...including those not on sleds.

I was riding with a buddy a few years ago and I passed 2 cross country skiers...they were flipping me off. I went on for a while and then noticed my buddy wasn't coming. I went back and one of the skiers had hit my buddy with his ski pole. There was a confrontation between the two....no I didn't shoot the guy brainiacs (meaning those that have commented that I would just shoot someone for committing a crime). However, I arrested him right there and my buddy went back to get the local authorities. I guess for those on here that want to live in their fantasy worlds that nothing bad can ever happen to them...go ahead. No one will break in your home, no one will ever try to harm a friend or a loved one. No one you come across while enjoying your hobbies will be a threat to you, your family, or your loved ones.

I don't know how many complacent victims I have come across when investigating a crime! One included a home invasion in a very small community. The offenders tied the father and the two kids up and raped the wife. They didn't have any doors locked, they didn't have any weapons they could easily access, and the father said to me that he never thought this could happen to them.

Two law enforcement officers were killed in Idaho in the backcountry by a crazy man. Do you recall that case? hmm Claude Dallas? Myself and two buddies rode up on a mountain man (with a cabin and dogs) waving a rifle in the air a few years back. I was packing and no I didn't shoot him brainiacs....I didn't even confront him at the time. I did go back with other officers and confront him. He was definitely given a warning.

I have seen fist fights in the mountains while riding. Glad these idiots didn't pull any guns out....but if they had? Another riding buddy will tell you about 4arrests I made one our way to sled. Granted most people wouldn't know a wanted criminal ....and if they did they should get the hell out of there and call authorites! But these guys had AK-47's and lots of methamphetamine in their truck. Bad guys are everywhere....not just in inner cities Marcuso....not just in prisons. Yes, the chances of running into one in the backcountry are greatly reduced....but the chance is always there. Like I said I ran into a felon I arrested years prior without a firearm because I had the attitude you do. Never again will I be in that situation like I explained. I arrested this felon for aggravated assault too! Meaning he stabbed his brother 20 times in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ....and yes Marcuso this guy is actually a likeable friendly guy. Would you or an average JOE ever know he had that kind of past? NO! I guarantee if you met him you would say the same thing as you stated above...."He was very friendly guy." What, do you think people go around broadcasting their criminal intent and waving guns around? Most of them are friendly upfront until they can get their victim in a vulnerable circumstance.

I know people are very unaware of the crime that goes on around them. Crime is fairly prevalent anywhere you go...yes even in Edmonton. I see a lot of violent meth heads in this area that do construction contracting. They make decent money and they like to buy sleds and tweak them...I see them in the mountains at times. Yes, they would probably be friendly to you Marcuso if you didn't accidentally do something to them to piss them off.

I could give you numerous instances where people have been victims of violence in the mountains or remote places.

I hear the same old complacent broken record from people all the time...it's ALWAYS very interesting to hear people say I wish I could have protected my friends and family when they are violently attacked. Marcuso I hope you, your friends, and your family are never victims of a violent attack. I wish it on no one. However, the chance is always there. ....and my argument is not for people to live in fear...just be prepared...be prepared like you are with a beacon and probe. Be prepared like you are with an emergency kit when you go hunting....be prepared like you are when your vehicle has a flat tire.
