packin' a gun while riding

Yes, for many of the reasons listed on here. The wife and were greeted by 4 or 5 wolves in Petersville about 5-6 years back. I'm sure there are other AK riders on here that have encountered wolves at Pville. They didn't bother us, more curious than anything. Since then I've carried. You never know what you'll encounter that deep in the wilderness. Just makes sense to me. Never once removed from the holster while out riding though.

Wow.

I'm sure I'll get flamed and i don't really care, this is ridiculous. Totally bizarre to me, the thought of carrying a gun around with me while sledding has never once crossed my mind, not once.

All I see is a bunch of REALLY lame rationalizations for wanting to carry a gun. The ONLY reason I buy as being honest and legit out of all the ones presented is "it's fun to shoot shiz". The rest are total BS.

Flame away...

P.S. I'm a gun owner and avid shooter/hunter.

I always pack because you never know when you'll run into a pack of wolves. If your from spokane,I was the the one they made such a big deal about smoking a few wolves by lookout pass.

So watching your wife get stabbed in the chest by a x-country skier (this did happen) with a razor sharp ski pole doesent warrent a bullit in the head?

Or getting all of your stuff riped off and your by some dumb hippy doesnt warrent a bullit through the moter of their subey?

We have more issuues than wlof and couger hunting here in the US and it's only going to get worse. I'm going to choose protection as part of my survival kit.

i wonder how many people are going to think back to this thread if they are ever stuck on the mountain for a night, thinking to themselves i wish i woulda brought my pistol. personaly i have a gun to use, not to sit in a safe and be pretty. anyone else here take theres fly fishin with them? ive seen a couple bears out while fishin and im always glad that i have my sidearm with me... but then again some of you guys might be pro bear wrestlers :cool: :beer;

I've never packed my pistol, but after reading this I think I might want to. If I was stranded (had a close call last winter) I would wish I had it.

Everyone carries a beacon, but how many times have you actually used it?

Come to think of it snowmobiling is the only time I don't carry a gun when in the mountains.

Who cares anyway if people want to carry a gun? It's their right, well Americans anyway.

I'd like to hear more about that...
Packing a pistol is definitely not necessary, nor for everyone. If I'm not riding with someone who packs, I'll be packing... you just never know. Like someone else said I've never needed a pistol while out playing in the snow, but I've never needed my beacon either and I still take it with me each ride...

Guys.. I know it’s easy to talk big..and may seem funny...
And personally I support your right to carry a gun if you feel it is necessary.
I however, would NEVER post anything as stupid as suggesting to shoot someone because they have different views than us.
It is posts like that that end up on the lefties websites that show us as drooling idiots. You endanger both snowmobiler rights as well as gun owner rights at the same time!!

I have two points I want to make.

1. Think before you post!!
2. SPELLCHECK

Bash me if you feel the need. :)

3. Look it over again when sober.
4. Repeat steps 1and 2.

Always carry ... sledding is no exception. Had to purchase a lightweight handgun to keep the pack weight acceptable though ;)

Exactly...I always carry....there are idiots like the one you described everywhere! ....including miles into back country on sleds. I bought a sweet conceal shirt....it is a real tight undershirt (like under armour), but it has a holster built into it....it sits where a gun would on a shoulder holster. It's perfect for sledding.

...and Waxy I think you are naive. I work in law enforcement and I have actually come across felons I have arrested while sledding. I did not have my handgun with me and I WILL NEVER be caught in that situation AGAIN!!!!! What if you are done sledding for the day and you get back to your rig and some clowns are breaking into your rig? You gonna say peace be unto my friends and go your way? hahaha

If you don't feel the need to pack... Don't. Simple as that. I have been in a few uncomfortable situations that easily could have gotten out of hand. Granted these were on dirt bikes, but the same could easily happen on the snow. When I started bringing my Wife and Kids along into the backcountry is when I felt the need to have a little "protection" along with us. Kind of like the American Express Card now, I don't leave home without it.

You Gots to be fricken kid'n me!

Packing a gun while riding???????
I just love to pack more pounds sled. It makes it soooo fast
I did see a big f'n snow hare at the snowies last weekend. I bet that would have been choice in my hotdogger!! You bring the gun and I will bring the seasoning!
Silly kids??

On the 1 in 100,000,000 chance this was to happen to you, and the same odds that you were actually prepared at the exact instant before it happened to react, you might be glad you had it. The rest of the time, you're either wasting your time or going to prison.

Or getting all of your stuff riped off and your by some dumb hippy doesnt warrent a bullit through the moter of their subey?

My point exactly, again, you'd have to be there at the exact right time to prevent it, if not, you're just shooting at a random "subey"...hope you enjoy prison.

But hey, whatever you need to tell yourself...

Naive? Spare me. I'm sure there's felons everywhere, hell, I might have been BS'ing with them at the bottom of a hill on any given day. Unless they're committing a felony against me, how would I know, and what am I going to do about it? You tell me, what should a person do about?

What is the non-law enforcement person going to do, confront a potentially armed felon and make a citizen's arrest?

If I come down the hill and some clown is breaking into my rig, I call the cops, take down any info I can to help them out, and then call to their attention that they're breaking into my rig. Most likely they make like trees and leave, worst case scenario they're like some of the gun happy sledders out there and I'm staring down a gun, I'm not sure how having my own gun makes that situation any better, but to each his own I guess...

I'm really surprised that a law enforcement officer would come on a public forum and suggest that the public take the law into their own hands...

I agree. It's your right to pack, so have at it. I think it's ridiculous, so I don't. To each his own.

I'd question how those situations might have ended differently if everyone involved was armed...

Wow, the liberals are out! If you don't think you should carry a gun while riding then why do you even bother posting on this thread? I will put it this way......If anything horrible ever happened in my life that I could have prevented if I were packin but didn't, I would regret it for the rest of my life. I would have to live with the guilt the rest of my life and I would not be prepared to do that. I always carry and with the F N thieves running around, it's safer to take the gun with you rather than leave it in your truck to get stolen anyway. What if you get car jacked on the way up or down the hill or you are in the parking lot and witness a Domestic Violence situation and the guy or gal has a gun, lots of you would just watch and then run. Yes there is one in a million chance that something would ever happen to you but I sure as heck will be prepared if it does. So good on you if you carry.

As the saying goes, when seconds count, Law Enforcement is minutes away. On a sled, you could be hours if not days away from assistance. Times have changed. There are bad guys out there, and they look for those that are ill-prepared to deal with their violence. The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. 10 years ago, I had absolutely no thoughts regarding carrying a weapon while riding. Last year, there were two times that I was very nervous because I didn't have a weapon. Neither time involved wild animals.

Your choice. Well, at least in the US. Legally carry or not. But at least recognize that the world is a very different place, and it is catching up to us too. Situational awareness may be more important than being able to defend yourself or your loved ones.
