packin' a gun while riding

We had issues with the area we went into with a deranged moose in the one canyon the trail goes through, it cornered a few skiers up against a tree. moose is big critters, im not gonna mess with em.

there are a lot of larger animals that come out around us, especially in the spring, and once my buddies dad went the other way at a T in the trail and went maybe a quarter mile on the trail, turned up into a little cut to turn around, got stuck, we traced our tracks though our play areas TONS..... no way of finding him, it was an hour before he got unstuck, radios would help, but hey, they dont always work either. im sure throwing another few pounds on the sled never hurt anybody.....

i do sorta go by the rule, better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it, maybe it never goes anywhere, and just sits in the pack, but when something bad happens, hate to be wishing.

I never packed a gun because i thought it was excess weight and compliantly unneeded.

Until... I was riding about 12 miles into the back country alone looking for two of my a$$ hole friends (they left early and turned around and went home and didn't tell me) so i rode around for a few hours looking for them and then my 900 started to bog so i was messing with the TPS and a few other things. Swapped belts, chained plugs, i even pored some gas out onto the ground and put fresh gas from my gas can in thinking i had bad gas.

It seemed to stop so i found a good hill and i was going to put a high mark on it but the sled kept going so i punched out the top and bailed off a cornice and came back down. On the way down i went over a little bump and gave her the onion to stand it on end coming down hill. It got right about at a 45 degrees wheelie and the engine shut off. This of course catapulted me over the bars and then the sled ran me over.

The sled piled into a group of trees splitting a 3" tree in half. Well i was SOL and 10 miles from the truck so i started off walking. On the way home i heard trees crashing not far away and i crossed 3 sets of different bear tracks. I was rescued by my friend when my dad called him up chewing his *** because i was supposed to be at work at 4 and it was 7. On the way back (only about 2 miles now) we seen huge sow grizzly tracks walking towards me and only 1000 yards down the trail.

Having a gun could save your life.

You can-

make it impossible for some one to steal your sled
signal people if you are hurt
hunt for food
break ice for water
shoot tree huggers
start avalanches
mark signs

Good wholesome family fun :D Ohh btw, in Montana you can carry a gun under your jacket if weather is permitting. And they can't search your pack so no worries there.

So I will be carrying a Touris stainless steal 1911

I was just told by Spring Snow hero, that tree huggers don't make good trophy mounts so I assume they are lousy eating...so they must be varmints??? Does that mean no limits?

all the time i got a 12 gauge pump action on me... this is how i enforce the turbo girls to go climb a hill instead of sitting at the bottom saying what there sled can do.

Now there is a valid reason:D !! Nothing worse than posers...lol

As well I can see if you were out in the bush and not in a riding area, then it could be useful on the rare occasion.

But I still don't see what the point is of people that pack one up a mountain other than to motivate the turbo gals.

Good discussion both ways though.

Guns

I have always packed at least one weapon with me in the woods. On my dirt bike,ATV,pick-up,sled...etc. Either to bag some game.Or to put something down. I hate to see any animal suffer....unless it deserves to:eek:
After the Duncan murder case near my hometown.I pack all the time.If only I could have stopped that sick FUC& from harming those kids..it would have been worth a stint in DeerLodge.

Springfield XD .40 compact with a 4"
Do you know who stocks them in town? (Galco holsters)
Those XDm's are sweet. Have you seen the video of it.

We've run across bears and drunks. I ride MX and Sleds mostly with my wife in the back country and I like the idea of being protected. And if I do get stranded I will be eating something for sure.

i ordered mine online im not sure what site my brother did it for me but if i remember correctly the gun range in west valley of redwood road carries them.

Interesting comments. Personally, I don't want the added weight when I ride but I can see where a handgun could come in handy as could a helicopter at times but that too would be a pain to haul around.

I own somewhere around 50 guns including some very illegal military type weapons but when I go sledding I don't carry a gun. I may live to regret that however. Everything is a risk to some degree.

I am glad however that I discovered that so many riders do carry, I will be sure not to piss anyone off from now on. :D

Maybe. Maybe always...

But I still don't see what the point is of people that pack one up a mountain other than to motivate the turbo gals.

Good discussion both ways though.

^^ It's because chit does happen; you never know when, where or who; and you have lost nothing by being prepared, but you might lose it all for not being prepared.

:beer;

I would take a gun if I wanted to, I guess. I ride in the Clearwater Mountains and I have never felt threatened by anything other than my own foolishness for trying that hill or getting buried too deep. You normally don't see much of anything, animal or human if you plan your trip right. I personally think a Bic lighter improves your chance of survival far more than any handgun.;) I also try to be nice to the people I do meet, keeps them from wanting to shoot me, I think.

Pack a Glock 23 in a shoulder holster with two extra mags on the other side. Balances out the weight. Don't even notice it. Why? Because I can, and you just never know...
Winter I am mainly concerned about Cougers looking at my kids as a tasty snack. Carry more for the two legged type when I'm in the middle of nowhere during the summer months. Alot more of them around. I'm usually packing whenever I leave the house, especially when the kids are with me. I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

I much prefer open carry myself. I really enjoy hunting and shooting sports, but:
Anyone asking "why pack pistols concealed in the first place" isn't clearly aware of the civil right and duty we in the US are afforded, It ain't about hunting, folks! We as, armed citizens, provide the first line of defense to all threats public and private. As another sledder mentioned, if we had been there: virginia tech, columbine, that McDonalds in the 80s, with lawfully concealed arms, when the shooter started firing. Going Postal isn't joke, right? A brave citizen can stop, with force of arms, dangerous, aggressive, harmful, felonious acts by any actor, be he four legged or two. A few well placed shots from the Concealed Carrying citizen at a flanking angle with a safe backstop and the shooting spree murder rampage stops in its tracks. Stopped, maybe DRT. Some of us choose to take that resonsibility seriously. It could happen anywhere, any time, to anyone, or do you know better and want to guarantee everyones safety?

If you are still asking yourself why you would/should/could carry when legal: It may be the lives of your very loved ones around you, that are saved by your ability to forcefully stop bad actors. Like pest control on the farm, nothing personal, nobody wants to get killed, right? How many gophers were stopped due to vigilant farmers and their .22s? And so could violent actors be stopped. When the risk out weights the reward, the game changes.

Unless, that is, you don't want to(or legally can't) take true responsibility for yourself, loved ones, neighbors, coworkers, etc. Many people don't have the stomach for that kind of responsibility. They are more then happy to "let the police handle it"... Sadly, Police are glorified reporters to the court, merely telling the grisly story afterwards.

Either accept the responsibility, or let those that do so on our behalf, do so quietly and safely. Concealed carry means just that, Out of sight out of mind. Be prepared.

PFfff, carry a gun, who ever herd of such stuff?

SHHH dummy that isn't a cig lighter in my pocket!

I'll edit the typos later

If you can't kill a bear with 7-9 .45 bullets, you have issues. A .45 has about the same knock down as a 44 special. I KNOW i can kill a bear with a 45. My buddy shot a 3 year old black bear with a .22 and killed it. I shot one of my mule deer this year with my .17 HMR. Don't get me wrong, my bear gun is a semiautomatic 300 win mag shooting a 220 grain boat tail but you can't lug that around with you all day.

I always laugh when you hear about groups shot at 7 yards. We target shoot with pistols at 30-40 yards. At 10 i don't even aim lol. I have been shooting weapons since I was 5 years old.

If we as AMERICANS do not stop the government from banning guns we won’t be America. If we didn’t have our guns we wouldn’t by AMERICA, we would be colonies to England still. Protect our gun rights and while you’re at it protect our land rights too.

one of the better bear guides in alaska has taken a brownie under duress with a colt gold cup in 10mm. there is not much between the 45acp, 40s&w and 10mm. one thing is for sure not many things like to be shot in the cranial ocular region, and just about nothing lives after one going there. I would not hunt with my 45acp, but I have with my 45super;) (for those not in the know, same gun, different bullet). and it works like a charm.

Packin

Always pack. Once you have had a serious confrontation with a SCUM BAG you never forget. They tend to rear their ugly heads these days in the strangest unlikely places.
