just to let you guys know, the forest service and fwp are out looking for registration's so you may want to make sure you have it on your sled as well as the decal

I met both the sled cops at the clubhouse yesterday. Both nice guys. Kevin was at the PSW club meeting last night. You need decal, registration, and a copy of your drivers license on the sled. The registration and license probably will get you a warning but the decal will get you a ticket. They travel together because one can't ticket on private ground. The decal is suppose to be on the cowling left side.

I talked to a guy this morning and he said Lincoln only got a dusting of snow as off 6 this morning. I am heading to Lincoln in the morning and will try to post snow report when I get there. Supposed to be pretty cold tomorrow but the trails are hard packed and with some new snow it should be pretty good.

I found this. Check out the last one (C). Montana State Law.

23-2-631. Operation on public roads, streets, and highways. (1) A person may not operate a snowmobile upon a controlled-access highway or facility at any time. Snowmobile operation is permitted on the roadway or shoulder of any public road or highway, state highway, county road, or city street located within the boundaries of any municipality only in the event that:
(a) the street, road, or highway is drifted or covered by snow to the extent that travel on the street, road, or highway by other motor vehicles is impractical or impossible;
(b) the operator has received permission or is otherwise authorized for that travel by the municipality in the case of town or city streets, the board of county commissioners for county roads, or the state highway patrol for all other highways; or
(c) operation has been authorized on municipal streets by a municipal ordinance.
(2) A snowmobile may make a direct crossing of a street or highway whenever the crossing is necessary to get to another authorized area of operation. The crossing must be made at an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the direction of traffic at a place where no obstruction prevents a quick and safe crossing. The snowmobile must make a complete stop before entering upon any part of the traffic way, and the operator shall yield the right-of-way to all oncoming traffic.
(3) A snowmobile may not be operated upon a public street or highway when permitted to do so by 23-2-601, 23-2-602, 23-2-611, 23-2-614 through 23-2-618, 23-2-621, 23-2-622, 23-2-631 through 23-2-635, and 23-2-641 through 23-2-644 unless equipped with at least one headlamp and one taillamp, which must be lighted at all times during operation, and unless equipped with a suitable braking device operable by either hand or foot.
(4) (a) Unless operation is otherwise allowed under subsection (4)(b) or (4)(c), the operator of a snowmobile who operates the snowmobile upon a public roadway, street, or highway when allowed to do so under the provisions of 23-2-601, 23-2-602, 23-2-611, 23-2-614 through 23-2-618, 23-2-621, 23-2-622, 23-2-631 through 23-2-635, and 23-2-641 through 23-2-644 must have in possession a license to drive a motor vehicle as required by the laws of the state of Montana.
(b) The operator of a snowmobile may operate the snowmobile upon a public roadway, street, or highway when allowed to do so under the provisions of 23-2-601, 23-2-602, 23-2-611, 23-2-614 through 23-2-618, 23-2-621, 23-2-622, 23-2-631 through 23-2-635, and 23-2-641 through 23-2-644 if the operator:
(i) has in possession a certificate showing the successful completion of a Montana-approved snowmobile safety education course; and
(ii) is in the physical presence and under the supervision of a person who is 18 years of age or older.
(c) An operator who crosses a street, road, or highway, who operates a snowmobile upon a street, road, or highway that is drifted or covered with snow to the extent that travel on the street, road, or highway by other motor vehicles is impractical or impossible, or who operates a snowmobile in any other areas of the state where operation is lawfully permitted is not required to apply for or possess a driver's license under the laws of the state of Montana.

Hank, the next time I go to Lincoln I will print this and go have Kevin give me there take on this. It seems pretty clear to me that someone is making policy.

Hank, I just sent an email with this info to Jim Paris president PSW and asked that he show it to Kevin and Amber of the FS. We will see what they have to say. There was a lot of discussion at the meeting about this and where the tickets were written.

I get so mad when these guys start making stuff up, I can't imagine there is a Federal Statue either, they usually do a "Forest Order" that states something like "all motorized use on the national forest must comply with all aplicible state and local laws" then they write you for a violation of a forest order. I am going to continue to look into this stuff though, I hate crow sandwiches!!

Re: tickets.
Hank that is the one I found (23-2-631) that you DON’T have to have a drivers license. (ATVs, yes) Sounds to me just like some more sh!t to harass us with. It would also seem to me that a "copy" of reg and drivers license could be illegal according to other MCA.

I talked with a Game Warden friend in Seeley and he said the only thing you must have is the DECAL.
“ 23-2-616. Registration and registration decal -- application and issuance -- use of certain fees. (1) Except for a snowmobile registered under 23-2-621, a snowmobile may not be operated on public lands by any person unless it has been registered and a registration decal is displayed in a conspicuous place on the left side of the cowl.”

He said the guy in Lincoln is new and he is flexing his wings. Apparently there has been some problems with inappropriate registration and stolen sleds, etc. and the state is loosing revenue. Too bad. If someone asks to see your reg, you can tell him, nicely of course, to p!ss off. Or be even nicer and say it’s not required to have it. If they try to write a ticket (or warning) make them write down the statute supposedly violated.

Fuzz, If you read the first section it appears to require you to have your D/L on you when you are allowed to drive on or along road or street that is used my motor vehicles, so like in West Yellowstone you would need it. Do they allow any travel on streets in Lincoln maybe that is the issue. I always am real nice to guys that have ticket books. They can usually find something to jot down if you wee-wee them off!!! I usually have a copy of my registration in my handle bar bag.

You can drive on any street in Lincoln (I think) except HWY 200 that runs right thru town. You can cross it and ride on the side of the road. But we weren't in town. We were at the clubhouse up Sucker Creek Rd.

went up into copper creek area yesterday. not at all impressive :( the snow was harder that concrete and all the major bowls had come down within the past two weeks. would make for a great ride with two feet of fresh stuff

New snow!!!!!!!!

Lincoln has new snow!!!!!!!!!!!! Talked to a guy who rode Martin's today and he ran into 8" to 2 feet of new snow. The town of Lincoln got 6" or more and lots of blowing and drifting. My buddy said it was great riding on the new powder with the solid base. Go anywhere you want now!!!!

Got up here to the cabin yesterday to plow it out. 8 inches of real nice snow here. Instead of plowing the road I used a snowblower needed the exercise. This is some great snow riding should be excellent. Like a dummy I didn't bring my sled but might go home and get her.

I was in town today and Team thunderstruck was at the Bootlegger. My guess is they were filming in the Bowls. There was a ton of sleds out today. I really messed up not bringing mine.
