Kurt's Polaris Gear Down Kit?

I grew up riding trails in MN and now live in the mountains. I have a 14 pro 163 with the Kurt's gear down kit. I love it in the mountains and would highly recommend it. That being said, it is not good for trail riding - even at elevation. In MN / Michigan I would leave the stock gearing in it.
Have u reclutched? To match ur gearing....

Why it is not good trail riding?

We didn't see any difference on the top speed ! Stock gearing vs Gear down kit at 2.41 at 3000'

There is no sacrifice on the trail at my elevation even with 2.41 gearing.

They will have one more available. I called TKI this morning. Left a voicemail. Tom called me back about 30 minutes later. Talked to him for about 20 minutes.
I asked him questions and he asked me some about clutching.
Decided on a gearing for my sled and rider weight.
He told me if I wanted a different gearing he would trade me sprockets if I paid shipping. Well that was a no brainer.
Explained to him the run around I was getting with another company. (I did not mention any names)
Told me he had a just received parts back from anodizing but he had several sets ready to go if I wanted it now.
He printed the shipping label while I was on the phone and assured me they would ship today.

I'm sure Curt's gear down kit is a good investment......I am in no way bad mouthing the product. Just disappointed by the customer service.
I am willing to spend the extra money to get an equally as good product as promised.

Thanks for all the info. I ordered from TKI today myself. I decided to go with the 2.33. I have a stock 2015 155 with a whole 17 miles on it due to lack of snow. Dang Washington weather! I typically ride between 3500-7000'. What gearing did you choose and what sled, elevation, etc?

2014 800 Pro 163 Stock. Some clutch work.
Usually 6 - 9000 feet.
Went with the 2.33 gearing.
Will try blue pink primary spring. Then adjust 68g mtx weights for rpm.
Changed black secondary spring for black purple already.
Stock helix is 56/46-36 I believe. Have to look . will change helix to adjust back shift after I see how lower gearing works with stock helix.

Ordered a TKI gear down Wednesday morning.
Guess what UPS delivered tonight.
BAM! That's customer service!

I have been working with TKI for quite some time - and tried both the 2.25 and the 2.43 on a 2014 163 pro
Biggest dfference is in the trees- where the 2.4 was more snapper and better on low end.
For high marking and boondocking the 2.25 woud generate the needed track speed-keeping backshift on step where the 2.4 fell short a bit trenching more causing you to steer with your feet as the skis were skward.

Did some secondary clutching changes and not a really big difference from stock (the sled is pretty good stock)

Trying different secondary springs now to analyze the difference- but the stock secondary continues to provide good side load- and heat generation has been reduce significantly....
Might be a save your money for most - running stock secondary set-up- as when gearing down focus should be in the secondary.. IMHO

It really nice having quick delivery of an item isn't it! I love it when that happens!! It's one of the great perks of ordering products made not only just in the USA. But just a state away!!

Ordered 2.33 gearing on Thursday. Hoping it ships on Monday.
You must have it installed by now and testing today?
Will be waiting for you review!!
Washington snow conditions really suck right now:face-icon-small-fro

Finally got sled repaired and gear down installed. Short rip in the field behind the house.
Hitting 8300 easily. Might need to put more weight in the clutch. Have to get it on the hill in some deep snow and then find out.

8300 is pretty spot on at the house.

My suggestion is take your weights with you but don't put them in until you take a couple pulls on a hill at elevation. Watch your revs and track speed. You should find that your tach is lower on the mountain than in the field behind the house.

Heck, I don't mind hitting 8450 on the trail. Usually on the hill, it settles at 8300.

That's the plan.

Kudos to Kurts Polaris

If you have followed this thread you know that KP makes a pretty good gear down kit.
They did however have some issues with the delivery.
I voiced my concerns and stated the facts of what happened to me.

I received a call today fro Kurts Polaris. Very apologetic for what happened and understood my frustrations. They didn't try to side step the issues I had and listened to what I had to say.
They explained what happened with the delay on my order but didn't excuse themselves from the mistake.
Promised to promptly credit me back for my return and wanted to know if there was anything else they could do to make it right.

That is all I wanted and if they are willing to own a mistake and fix it that's all you can ask.
I won't have any problems giving them business in the future if they are willing to go to those lengths to keep their customers happy.

Good on you guys. Thank you

I am running 2.28 at 2200 and 6-8500.

It seems to be the magic number for multi purpose and not a 3".

I havent made it to the mountains with it yet but many run this ratio and like it.

I have no issues with it at home either.

what top speed numbers you seeing at home? i would like to be still king of the lake against my friends 2013 m8 hahaha

That's GREAT to hear. They are good guys.

2.41 is my ideal gearing on this chassis with my 3" paddles.
I ride from 5000-8000 feet.

2.25 would be GREAT for your lower elevations at home, but you'll have to clutch for it.

You NEED to re-clutch if you re-gear in order to maximize the new upshift and characteristics created by more power to the track.

Anyone should understand that on sleds that clutching is done to create desired performance at the specific gearing. New gearing will be optimal with clutching changes.
Just as with engine mods, pipe, head, porting, etc. You need to clutch to adjust and achieve optimal performance.

Gearing down will likely see higher revs. You'll have to clutch it out if they rev too high.
Gearing down will likely see you reaching peak revs faster and you'll hold it easier. If you don't then your upshift and backshift will not be optimal with the springs that you were using for that OTHER gearing.
Ok... headin to da UP on Friday. Crossing my fingers that the 2.33 gear kit I ordered shows up tmrw.

I know ill have to do some adjusting in the secondary, and have ordered a different helix among other things. For this weekend tho, running the stock setup and thinking that the black purple secondary spring should work pretty good...? I usually run the stock black one at this elevation (1000-1500 ft) but with the gear down I'm thinking the black purple should stiffen up the secondary enough to keep rpm in check? Or should I bring along a pile of other ones to try as well? U guys who've tuned ur secondary clutch, how much stiffer of a spring are you running? I will eventually be running the TRS setup methinks, but not this weekend.

Let me know how this works for you. That is where I primarily ride and would like to see how it works. I don't intend on making and secondary changes immediately when i get the kit but will down the road if i need to.

Currently i am running a 110/290 primary spring and MDS adjustable weights with the hex bolt and washer in the tip and drilled bolt and washer in center. This set up is performing well but seems to be just under my desired peak RPM. Will be removing the washer in center for second trip to see how that helps.

I would like some more low end and responsiveness in the trees along with more affordable replacement belts/cooler belt temps which is my desire to pick up the gear down kit in the off season

take a look at my post on the previous page.
I read it like 8 times lol. But u didnt post helix specs and its unclear if that spring really is a black purple (i suspect it is). Also ur running MDS weights, which r good weights for very specific riding styles. Real snappy down low, not so much on the big end. I know, I have a set. I wonder if one of u guys woulda kept pulling away (in the race) if u were using 10-70 Polaris weights....

Maybe Ill try a few combos with the MDS for kicks n grins. They r awesome for the UP, lotta belt grip and they always stay engaged so ur not coasting down hills.... maybe load the tip all the way so I can maintain some shiftout at higher track speeds.

I honestly dont know yet as i havent had enough decent snow to really wind it out. Next time out i will try.

Previously, my max mph was 87. I have adjusted my speedometer accordingly for the ratio change so it will display the proper corrected speed.

I will post what i find.
