If you wear an "ABS Bag" or "Similar" aren't you part of the problem ?

Hey, check this out.

http://www.avalanche.org/av-reports/

In relation to the # of incidents (not the number of actual deaths), the number of sledders is lower than other incidents.

16 incidents: 5 included snowmobilers. (just over 1/4th of them)

22 deaths: 14 were snowmobileers. (just over 1/2 of them)

Clearly, if your an owner of such a bag you admit to taking the risk on potential dangerous slopes during snowmobile activity.

Steve,

I wear an ABS bag, wear a beacon, carry a probe and shovel. I check the avy sites regarding the snow conditions. I continually try and monitor the snow pack when riding\climbing. Even when taking as many precautions as possible accidents occur. We lost a riding companion years ago in an area that had never slid. It was on a day when avalanche conditions were "LOW". It was classified as a "freak" slide.

I can appreciate the concern you have for the snowmobile community. Education regarding back country sledding is paramount, especially with todays new sleds.

While I take NO OFFENSE to you "lumping" me in with the certain element that take no heed to respect Mother Nature and Her abilities to cause incredible destruction, ie. avalanches, some members may not feel the "love".

One thing is certain, it has been a thread viewed by many, and if it opens just a few eyes, that in and of itself, should redeem your not so charismatic postings. Remember, no cuddling. LOL.

If this is a shot at what happened to OT's wife, you are way out of line. It's one thing to disagree with someone, but that is extremely harsh..

No its not. Its his logic, they bought the late model safe 4wheel drive and ventured out in bad weather, isn't that part of the problem? he has no bones about saying that stuff to people on here that have lost, I'm simply mirroring his logic to a loss he can relate to.

I remember some of his threads. He also had one about how animal was a dumb a$$ for not having life insurance.(I bet CG forgot about that one)

honestly I really don't know why he is still on here now that I think of some of his past posts.

I have lost family to accidents and even suicide, so I know what its like. You don't get on a forum and start calling people stupid because they made an error in judgment.
Thats hurtful to the victims family and friends.

This has nothing to do with OT trying to wake people up to be aware of the dangers. He's just being a dick, hiding behind a cause.

Your logic is very is off base by a huge margine... Had my wife taken her car 4wheeling and attempted to climb a known avy slope i might agree. My wife died when an oncoming vehicle was speeding and lost control of there speeding vehical which was not in 4 wheel drive and crashing head on into my wifes vehicle. We drive on ice roads nearly all winter, How about You ?....How the 2 compares to a snowmobiler of skier taking the "risk" by riding in known avalanche prone area's or moderate to steep slopes is not remotely even the same....If 2 snowmobilers crashed head on while snowmobiling would that be the same as 1 snowmobiler or a group of snowmobilers risking there life riding avalanche prone slopes ?

So you knew the roads were icy and that there were other drivers on the roads. Isn't that a risk?

^^^^^
See.... this is how you come across, I could keep going but its pointless with you.
People have lost friends and family and you get on and try to prove how smart you are. And all you do is create more hurt and anger and nothing else.

Do you know the differance between Day Time & Night Time ? I suppose in your world you don't.

Do you drive your car to work or drive your snowmobile to work ?

Do you hav kids ? Do they ride a school bus to school every day ? Does the school bus have seat belts or airbags for your kid ?

Do you really want people to believe that snowmobiling in avy prone slopes that cause avalanches is the same as driving a car on the road....did you know head on car crashes happen on dry roads as well. In your world you probably believe avalanches can be caused when there is no snow at all in the hills.

Your IQ is skewed what have you been smoking today ?

Smoking, smoking who is smoking and why wasn't I invited?:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-ton

I bet the stats show driving in bad weather conditions is as risky as sledding in the back country.

You want to keep going? tough guy.

Getting your feathers ruffled, ??? Post the stat tough guy. FYI its "sledding on avalanche prone slopes"....Theres plenty of places to ride in the backcountry that are free from avalanches. Haven't you been outdoors lately ?

Jet Fuel & Diesle aren't they both the same ?

Fuel is Fuel

OT - if you posted this as a thought provoking topic, I think it is a good thing for everyone to think about. It's too bad your personal trajedy was brought into it. I'm sorry you lost your wife...I'm sure the Holiday season was not an easy one this year.

I have ridden for the last 4 years with a pack. Anything and everything I can do to improve my odds, as well as the people I ride with, I will always do. Personally, I think packs are safety gear that are a good tool to have in the box. Combined with avy training, beacon, probe, shovel, constant awareness and finally, a lot of common sense.

I do think turbo's may be heading us in a bad direction though.

The only way to not get in an avalanche is to not ride at all.

We all take risks every time we hit the back country. Has anyone ever seen an avalanche in a very non-avalancey(is this a word) type area? Of course we have, every time we think we are safe we get caught. The reason more people are getting killed is not because of no avy training, it is because there are more people in the woods, and more powerful sleds to get us there, higher and higher. Avy courses have been doing their job, and a good job at that. But the more people ride the more the mortality rates will rise, plain and simple.

Having an avy bag does not constitute riding risky'er(sp?), nor does it promote it. It is stupid, and well.....stupid to even assume that. NEVER, and I mean NEVER have I heard anyone state that they are a better rider, or a safer rider with an avy bag! What a dumb thing to say.

I think the better thing to do is not to worry about what you are doing, but rather worry about what others are doing. Who cares what you(me,we) are doing, but when there are other people that can be hurt, we need to be aware.
I look at it this way, when I get behind the wheel, I never worry about my driving, because I know how to. But the other people(texting, make up, talking on cell, just plain unattentive) driving are what I watch for. I have had many opprotunity's to crash b ut because I watch what others are doing on the road, I never have. Missed two head ons two weeks ago in fact, with my daughter in the car.

Lets say it together......
