How to assess value of '88 turbo Iroc?

My step-Dad sadly passed away unexpectedly about 4 months ago. My Mom said she will sell me his car for $5,000. He let me drive it once and I have always admired it. I think it is probably worth more than $5,000 but how do you know what a car like this is worth? I know he had A LOT more into it than that.

Here is what I know about the car:

1988 Camaro Iroc
Looks all stock except new hood with scoop
not t-top or convertible
manual transmission
129,000 miles
about 10,000? miles on I don't know what all modifications
I do know he put in a new motor and turbo
He mentioned to me a few years back it had about 400hp

Any ideas?

Any advice about owning a car like this? It will not be a daily driver of course, and I would probably like to race it at some point. He never did take it to the drag strip and I never understood why. I have owned semi-fast cars in the past, but of a different sort (turbo eclipse and twin turbo 3000GT).

I have always liked the third gen f-bodies. You might post this up on CZ28.com or thirdgen.org. I belong to CZ28.com and there is always some pretty good advice on there. It is kind of like Snowest, a lot of a$$holes and a lot of good guys with good advice.:D:eek:

That seems really cheap. It costs money to put a turbo on. All the turbo stuff on the car is probably worth more than 5G. Just my .02

"Keep on loving you"

What motor? 350 TPI or 305 TBI? (I don't know jack about IROC's). I'd assume a 350 with that HP. If it's got the TPI motor with a turbo and it's in tip top shape I'd call that a good deal. A friend of mine had an Impala SS with a 350 TPI and a supercharger, bout 400-425 HP, that thing was bad a$$. We blew away some kids in nitrous powered 4 pop rice rides like they hit the breaks instead of the gas. If this camaro runs anything similar to that you'll have fun. Don't forget to buy a wife beater and a REO Speedwagon tape to go with that mullet.

Pics would be nice.

AGREED and I will be the azzhole here today.

unrelated to your loss I am sorry for that however, with that said if you truely want to know what that car is worth just look in your wallet and whatever is in there right now is bout all its worth.

Those cars are worth VERY little and the real nice ones that have some value you would be most lucky to find a guy that would actually cough up the cash.

If the car has family value dont let it go! But dont be a fool and pay more than its worth either. Turbo no turbo just take base book value and give them that.

Had an 86 Iroc in grade 12....the 350TPI was shooting 245 hps back then stock, but new motor etc throws that out the window...a stock car would be worth maybe in that range and as we all know, the add-ons we choose to put on anything really don't increase the re-sale value at all....so anywhere in that ballpark seems fair to all parties IMO!

lmao, I have the business in the front but there will be no party in the back!

I will post more details about the work done to it once I find out. I don't have any pictures and the car is in California, I will have to go get it. But here is a picture of one that looks just like it except his has the new hood with scoop:

Get on autotrader and see what people are asking for cars in similar condition with similar mileage. Performance mods don't add a whole lot to the value, so be conservative with what you add for those. What someone has "into" something has very little to do with what it will sell for....think sled mods.

Look for cracked or chipped paint on each side of the car, where the red circle is. This cracked paint is where stress cracks start showing up. I used to work for a guy that bought wrecked 3rd gen F-bodies, cut them in half, and welded two halves of two different cars together. Guys with greasy hair and big gold chains would show up, pay way too much for the car, and then tell us what "wicked-cool" paint to lay on it.

Even without 400hp, it might be a good idea to tie the sub-frames together (you can buy a kit at any number of places) and get a cross-brace for the front strut towers. If nothing else, it will help keep the sagging and stress cracks to a minimum.

Road Trip

Okay, so I went to California this weekend to check out this car and help my Mom out with some stuff. I will post some pics and maybe a video when I get home Mon-Tue(making the 12 hour drive home Mon). Here are a few details I found out, keep in mind I don't know much about motors :face-icon-small-blu.

I drove it and it has a lot of power, couldn't really test it out as the registration wasn't current and didn't want to risk getting pulled over. I still am not sure what motor is in it(is there a way to tell by looking at it?), but I think it maybe has a built 350. It has a ProCharger Supercharger. I am going to talk to the guy at Top Of The Hill Performance who did all the work (anyone heard of them?) I saw receipts for the original work he had done with new motor, headers, rockers, exhaust and a bunch of other stuff at the same time (almost $15,000), this does not include the supercharger at all. I know the supercharger was about $4,000 not including labor. He has also done quite a bit of work to keep it cool and not overheat.

Cosmetically it has been neglected. The paint looks okay, needs wax. Body is pretty good, only a couple golfball size dents. Interior needs thorough cleaning, new dash, headliner, console lid, and a few small plastic pieces. It needs a front wheel alignment and one new tire. Possibly needs new battery, and??????

I am probably going back in a couple weeks to pick it up. :D

well you have a couple thing to consider....

there is some family value, only you can decide what that is worth. if you feel like holding on to it for 30 years it will be worth more then you paid for it.

in my neck of the woods the cars are worth about 2 grand for a nice clean one. they seem to get all kinds of loose body parts with age and rattle/squeek. so tha actual value of the car is not 5g's to the open market. there is a wealth of horsepowr that you can make with the sum of parts you have, and you could make the "Joe Dirt sleeper" real easy. there is nothing worse then getting your doors blown off by a mullet blasting loverboy through the t tops:cool:

so, if you are looking for an investment, its gonna take a ton of years before the car is worth more then 5g's. if you want to keep it in the fam......go get it.
