Got Elk????

Melissa's got ELK!!!!

Ok, after 8 days and alot of time in some of Idaho's greatest hunting grounds. Melissa (Cowgirl151) takes her first ever bull elk.

Its been a long day so I will make this short. After a few missed shots at 300 class bulls early in the hunt (last week) she had to call it quits a day early so we could make it to the snow show on Saturday to hang with our sleddin buds.

But talk about a work out. The 270 - 280 ish bull has to call it quits in the middle of a pond!:eek: We then had to drag it out and start getting ready for the pack trip out. Without the horses, WTF! why do we feed them things?? Who needs them anyway right! 9 hours later we call it a day! Time for a cold one:beer;

I just want to tell Melissa she did great on this hunt, and I am proud of her. I had alot of fun being her quide. I only quit twice, ok only once but missing a couple 300 class bulls.

Finally....I got Elk!

Well! What a hunt!! Thanks to the hubby, he had me on a few different bulls and I had buck fever....wait...bull fever so bad I missed 'em!! So on the last day to hunt (Had to go to Utah to the snow show! Priorities ya know!! ;) )We spotted this guy!! I took 2 shots at him and bummer.......the heard all runs off we wait a few minutes and Jeff hikes over to the scene and NO blood!!! What!!! I was so disappointed in myself that I missed again!!! So we decide to try to push the heard back out of the pines they ran into and maybe get lucky and get another shot at a bull. So I hike up a ridge to get in position and Jeff starts to hike around the peak to push them out. So I'm waiting and I keep hearing this sound down below me. After 4 times of hearing it I radio Jeff and tell him I hit something??? I kept thinking...did I hit a calf???? These cries were the weirdest sound I ever heard. Jeff says we'd better go check it out and right then this bull runs out of the quakys below us and heads right for this pond, he gets in it, starts rolling in it and then just stands in the middle of it!!!!!!! (He was bleeding out inside and must of been fevering and was trying to cool off.) I'm freaking out now! Calling Jeff on the radio....."he's in the pond...I hit him!!!" Then the a$$ lays down in the pond and dies right in the middle of it!! What Thaaaa!??! Here is some pics......

Ok, first of all sorry for the edit. I thought I would let Melissa tell her side of the story!

The reason we didn't have our horses is because I went out Wednesday and rounded up elk camp while Melissa was at work. Knowing she only had one day (Friday) to hunt. We were planning on heading to Utah for the snow show Sat. Anyway the place I love to hunt is about 50 min. from the house and about a 90 min hike in. We got up early Friday morning and headed out for the hunt, leaving from the house.

After playing hide and seek or swim or sink with the bull Melissa had shot, she headed atop a ridge to see if she could get cell service. No luck with that so we decided by the time we drove home got the horses caught, loaded, the pack saddles on and drove back we could pretty much have the elked packed out to the truck. So we quartered the elk and packed it out on foot. I have done this quite a few times so it was nothing new for me.

Horses would have been great for the pack out but I would much rather hunt from a foot. Just the way I like to hunt and I have hunted both ways many times. Also no wheeler could be used to get the elk out because this area is closed to motorized travel, one of the reasons I love to hunt the area!

We still got the elk packed out and in the truck headed home by 5 pm. Made it to the Snow Show to see all our friends!:face-icon-small-hap I wish we would have spent more time with you quys but when the girls were laying down for a nap in front of Em's booth I knew it was time to head for home.:(

Any way it was great to see everyone!!!! And thanks for supporting Melissa so much!

WTF!!!! Next year I'm bringing a cooler full and we are heading to your house! Good thing I had too many Friday night after the hunt! I didn't even feel like spending money on beer!

I hear ya. Hector and I both had a cooler full. I think with your tired kids and our sick kids, it just wasn't meant to be. We'll plan better next time and hopefully have better luck. Again Congrats and Great to see your family.

Nice Job on your First Elk and being that big is very cool,,,, but really it looks like the only water hole for miles and yours takes a swim?

Thanks!!! :D And no chit!!! I just watched in amazement as he headed for the water! I thought he'd get out or I'd spook him out as I was hurrying down the ridge down to that water hole!! Oh well!! After a lot of work, it all worked out good in the end!!!!

Great report you two.:D And I was super happy you still made it down to the show. Hopefully next time things won't be so crazy and we can hang out longer and go to dinner.:) Looks like you filled the freezer Melissa. Got elk burger?? Maybe we'll have to come up for a BBQ.

yep pretty crazy how he headed right for the water, ive seen that happen before and the hunts the easy part....packing it all out is the hard part...unless you have a few Horses for that Job!!

A good man and neighbor buys another good man an Elk tag because he wants to hunt with him and enjoy the company. Good man and neighbor in turn gives the mount to the man who bought him the tag. Salt of the Earth stuff right there and what makes the world go around as far as I am concerned. Congratulations to your Dad and the neighbor! Take care...Jeff

awesome bull! Here is my little brother's elk he got on the youth hunt. It was shot by Navajo Lake. Good to see those of all ages out and hunting.
