My 8 year old loves his 200 although I wish it had a little more motor for him. We went for a ride today and at the end of the day ran into issues. Hoping for help.

Almost back to the truck he started to creep along and said it was full throttle. Full speed was less than 8 miles per hour. Normal is 25 or so. I lifted the rear end and it seemed to get going good but once I set it down and let it go, still less than 10 mph. I let him continue down the trail for a short ways just trying to get back to the truck.

Not long after that, it died completely and won’t fire. At quick glance, we couldn’t get spark and the ignition coil was hot to the touch. Had to tow it to the truck.
Was the low speed a sign of something? Obviously? But was it limp mode? Could it be stator? Bad voltage regulator? Talking to my son he did say that the hand warmers got very hot just before it went slow. That to me shows sign of voltage regulator going out?

Any help or guidance is appreciated
 
unplug the voltage regulator in the nose cone try the one with the grey connector first. if its bad the sled will run with it unplugged and then you know thats issue. if its not that one unplug the one next to it. sled runs with both unplugged but will burn out lights and handwarmers. just put a regulator in one, it ran perfect one day, wouldnt start the next.
 
here’s an update for you. Checked for spark again the next day and had spark. Not sure why I had issue with spark the previous day. Fired the motor and quickly knew something is wrong. Clank clank clank. The motor is toast. I’m bummed as this sled doesn’t have many miles and I thought it would last a long time.

At least it looks relatively cheap to replace. If I’m replacing motor, are there any options to put a bigger motor in it?
 
you could put a briggs 206 in it. they make bolt in kits, and should have more hp and can turn more rpm.
 
Thanks for the idea about other motors. I do love the idea of giving him a little more power.


I have scoured the internet and don't see where people have already been doing motor swaps in the 200 chassis. I am mechanically inclined but don't want to open up a can of worms and have a project that is over my head. When it comes to a larger motor, what are factors I need to consider to determine if the motor will work or not? obviously it needs to be a horizontal shaft motor. Make sure sizing still fits within frame in engine compartment? make sure crank is the same size? I don't really want to get into swapping clutches as well and need to do testing and tuning to get it to run right.What else do I need to consider? any advice is appreciated.
 
i see speedwerx makes an adapter to mount the briggs LO 206 in the 200's. and recmotors and other places sell the engines. they do this swap in some youth snocross race classes. the engines can be had with different carb slides and rev limiters for different power levels. i believe they have more power than the stock 200's.
