Jordan Kramer was stoned the day he got his learner's permit. Pulling out of his parking spot with a friend in the car, he hit the gas. Unfortunately, he'd accidentally put the car in reverse, and he struck the car behind him.
No one was hurt and the damage was minor, but that was just the beginning of Kramer's problems. The young man from California had multiple fender benders and countless more close calls. "The accidents were a direct result of getting high," he says. "They had to do with loss of concentration or slow reaction time. You're moving slower, but at the same time you want other things to move
Kramer is just one of many teens who have made the mistake of getting behind the wheel while high on pot. Nearly one in eight teens report mixing marijuana and driving, according to Students Against Destructive Decisions. Chances are, you've heard more about the dangers of drunken driving than drugged driving, because alcohol use is more common among teens. But "driving under the influence of marijuana is as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol," says Dr. H. Westley Clark of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 20. That's why lack of driving experience coupled with the impaired skills and judgment that can result from pot use are a recipe for trouble. An estimated 38,000 U.S. high school seniors reported in 2001 that they crashed while driving under the influence of marijuana, according to data derived from the national Monitoring the Future survey.
