Cold in garage but we're gettin it sorted out. I needed to send Dan something before I thought we should drop it in chassis... I am gonna pop er off in a couple hours if everything goes ok. Braaaaap!!!! (followed by sirens from local rent-a-cops). S'all good .

Hello my name is Zack and I am 13. Me and my Dad Snowmobile together but the Crank on the seld i ride has broke. And since the 500 is getting small it is leaving me with nothing for the spring riding.

Riding with my Dad is rather.....unique. We sually go around Mount Spokane and priest lake. Some of the biger rides was up in Revy and at Yellowstone.

My favorite was up at Revy- although we did not have the best of weather. The trip at yellowstone was nice- a good ride clear skys and nice snow.

My worst crash was up in priest lake. My Dad, Uncle John, and Corey were up higher on the mountain. I was on my Grandpa's sled and was bored.... not a very good situation.

the first few runs i was doing good. At least for me (i was 12 then), and i got this thought "how about this part of the hill?"

I should have stayed on the lake. I climbed up twice extreamly well. Then the third one, well.....i crashed.

I was heading down the hill when i had to try and turn the around some hill (i probably was about 100 lbs.) i could'nt get the sled to turn.

so i tried to stop on the hill, i was moving to fast and began to fish tail. So i tried to aim in between these 3 trees.

I was so close to making it- but my ski hit the tree and well... crashed. i broke the body pan. Blew it to pieces.

so that was how i spent my summer- working off about 300$. And now i ride the old Ragged sled. While it has a broken crank, spring snow is here- and i have nothing to ride.

My Dad and I are going to take Pics of the sled tonight. The cool thing is- we were going to pilledge it for pieces. This was going to be a summer project. I was so upset that we could not do it before hand!

Because that means the 500 XC would be my spring sled- which i out grew a while ago.

My boys first post...Im so proud!! lol

I hope he doesn't got it as bad as I did when i joined over 5000 posts ago...It does look like long winded post must be in his blood tough...lol...:o

The timing of this is contest is AWSOME!! My boy is 13 and just been ridding in the mountains about two years now....I had him on a 500XC that he has long out grew....

I bought a D8 this year and was excited to get him on what I affectionately call the ol ragged sled...it is my old 03 Vertical Escape....I took the noss off to keep him out of too much trouble ...lol

We did about two or three rides together and then the winter went crazy....2-4 feet of fresh pow every other weekend...too much snow for a rookie and nearly too much for me...lol..if thats possible...

So he sat home for a couple of months waiting for spring snow ....we squeezed in a trail ride in Revy but that was about it..

Long story short...the kids were all sledding on the big hill behind the house and I was using the ol ragged sled to pull the kids up the hill so they didn't have to walk...

let me say this first....

That escape is widely known on the 4m as being nearly bullet proof...its pulled more sleds off the mountain than I can count...lol....and it has NEVER been on the end of a rope its self...It has climbed some of the sickest shoots....been riddin hard and put away wet every time....

Well....that day towing the sleds up the hill was the day the ol ragged sled gave up the ghost so to speak.....and thank God it wasn't in the bottom of some deep bowl at Priest Lake ID or something but it was 50ft from the shop....well it lost the crank....

ran it into the shop under its own power but that all she could do....Zach was hart broken...he was so proud to ride dads old sled this year and was looking forward to the spring snow conditions that we normally have had for a month or so now but have yet to happen...

He and I were out in the shop looking it over tonight and I told him it would most likely be a summer project ......or we could part it out and it would give him the time over the summer to get the cash together to to get a newer sled ...I thought he was gonna cry when I told him hes still got the 500xc...ouch...I know what its like to go backwards..lol...no fun at all...

He's draging me out to the shop now to get some pics so I'll see if I can get a few up by tomorrow....The sleds still on the stand...It will be nice to have someone out in the shop with me to fix this if we are able to get a rebuilt motor...

Since i told him about the contest he is all fired up to fix it and not make it a summer project...heck...hes right...its snowing right now and we still have 15ft with in a hour or two from the house!:D

Ragged, I am amazed that sled lasted as long as it did. Your son should not feel bad, you ran that poor sled to............... let see, trees, off a cliff or two, etc.... and that was just the few times we rode together. Corey could probably attest to much more.

What else are you planning to do with the sled?

CLass Act all the way

Dano,
You never seize to amaze me with your ideas and open-heartedness (not sure if that word in Websters or not) Class act all the way.

EricW,
I have met this man only one time, after 45 minutes of conversation I am not surprised by this.

Class act's all the way.....:) :beer;

Incredible!

Incredible story! Though this is a new name, i used to go under polarssport440, I have skimmed these forums since 03 and i don't believe i ever recall a thread so touching to me. Eric and Dan, you guys are amazing people. I wish there were more people in the world like you guys. Thumbs up to you all!

goinvertical, i hope she runs like a top! wonderful story to read!

the ol ragged sled has been a good one!

SnowXTC....yep...its been riddin hard....but that motor had been bullet proof....Its a Struthers case and cyclinder ported motor. I considered parting the sled out but my boy woulda killed me...lol

Thats why this contest is such good timing...Ive heard alot of good things about these motors Indy Dan puts together....Im glad somone has the faith in the ol 800 poo motor...they sure make good HP...and the sled is perfect for a kid that ready to move to the next level.

Are you still on your ol purple hot rod??

My brother is coming over tomorow and we are heading up to Priest Lake for a ride in the sun then back home and hopefully get some pics of the ol ragged sled coming apart...My camera musta lost a crank too cuz it wont work...So my bros gonna take a few pics of Zack getting his hands dirty...:D

I stripped the tunnel and she is still running very strong. Kicked butt on a nice Apex a few weeks ago. Now he is getting a turbo.

I will never get rid of that sled. Toooooo much of my blood, sweat, and tears have gone into it. I will have it converted to a cofin so I can be buried in it.

Heading your way this week, unfortunately not to ride though, actually going to Walla Walla to lay my mother to rest on Friday.

I am looking forward to seeing what your son does with the sled.

Also interested in seeing some pics from govertical riding with his son............

About the Pictures

My sister brought home a camera that we can use to take the pictures but if we can't - My uncle is coming and we will use his camera and finally get some pictures up of the sled!

I have no dog in this fight, but I would like to see JR on the ole ragged sled. after all who is gonna give the cranks the longevity test better than a kid who will not earn enough $$ for a new sled for the next few years.

good onya dan

I know its not my call, but I say give jr a shot.

I vote for Jr.

If snowesters knew "all" the offers and help that Dan and Eric W have given since they helped me out , you would be blown away. (also snowxtc):) From phone calls to more parts these guys/gals never ceased to this day to get us up and running. Sorting her out but have faith, with a little more physical help, she will breathe again.
Anyhow, I am also casting my vote for Jr. Also thanks again to any who even take the time to read these posts, as you have to be "one of those types" to care. Obviously SW forum is full of them. God bless.

If Vert says JR it's good enough for me.

Plus let's help the guy out, I mean he's willing to go by Jr Ragged, obviously this kid is desperate;)

Don't forget to call on your friends Ty, speaking for myself, anytime I can lend a hand I figure I earn a brownie point or two. I am still operating at a deficit from the first 25 or so years of my life and more points are much appreciated. LOL Keep us posted man.

I too would vote for Jr Ragged. I have met Zach and he is a fine young man. The kind young person our society needs more of. He will no doubt be a strong ambassador for the sport as he grows. My only concern is that with his genetic connection to Ragged and this particular sled, we should also throw in 3 rolls of duct tape and a good shovel. Just funnin ya Zach, you'll lift and dig your dads D8 several times in the next years, you deserve a break. Good luck. EW

WOW! This is hands down, the coolest thing I have ever read. Dan and Eric, you guys are the kind of class and generousity that this sport needs. Absolutely amazing, guys. Ty, Dan, Eric, and all the others who have been such stand up guys, you have just given me a new target to aim for in life.

Thanks guys!

EricW ....I still have the ol Ragged hood with all the zip ties and duck tape...lol...maybe that would be a good starter hood for him eh??:face-icon-small-win

Pay back to the fam!

I heard about this thread and thought I'd come on here to tell my quick little story and put a vote in for the young Ragged...

About two weeks ago my BFs sled lost a crank in a deep dark hole up at priest lake. Towing it out wasn't an option. Erik and his brother John where out there with us that day and John was HAPPY to offer up his 800 motor for me to use. I was able to take his motor in, do a swap and get my BFs sled safely back to the shop -where it's parked and I have NO idea what we're gonna do with it!

Anyway, one good deed deserves another and with John being so giving and helpful with his motor to get a friend outta trouble I would like to see his nephew win a motor!

So one vote from me for the Jr Ragged!

If Jr Ragged rides likes his dad he will sure want to be on an older sled that can take a beating. :face-icon-small-win
Here are a couple pics from the day Jr Ragged was desribing when he crashed is Grampa's sled (Twice!!) He failed to mention the 1st time he sent it into the trees and knocked the mirrors off the sled..... Zach we never forget these things.....

This will be a great summer project for these guys!
