Shaping up to be a good get together, Irwin has some snow (enough for a good base anyway from the reports), should be a great time!

CSA has kicked in some gear for the raffle, and Allen is working on getting more donations. Can't wait!

Bad news for camping

I got this PM from GunniApexRider, who along with CBRob are members of the Snotrackers working to get better parking at Ohio Creek.

GunniApexRider said:
Chad,

BAD NEWS

First off, I must apologize, for myself and the snotrackers.

I just got an email from Phil, who has been leading the effort in getting the ohio creek trailhead moved.

We (snotrackers) have ran a ground with everyone the county, property owners and also the FS.

As of Nov. 19th Phil had said that moving the parking lot at the FS bathrooms would not be a problem.

The FS district snow ranger Kia Allen, had said the same was possible At the Oct 21 first meeting.

Today Phil in his email has said that getting the ohio creek lot open is
"A political hot potato and will most likely not happen this yr."

I do not know what all has came about in the last 2 wks Phil has been talking with the county the FS and Property owners when time permits.

Not until the Dec 15th meeting I will not know the full extend of the issue(s) that are holding up the program.

Again I Apologize

This just goes to show you the political hot seat that we sit in the middle of. Sandwiched between 3 wilderness areas and with the proposed possibility of loosing even more of our already small riding area to another wilderness boundary change that would put most if not all of the ohio creek road smack dab in the middle threw one of the 3 wilderness area's.

As for camper parking, as you know it is possible to park a few outfits there at the existing ohio trailhead, maybe we can show them bastids that this move is needed by filling the trailhead up. My only concern is pissing off the people when the county sheriffs ticket them. chances of tickets though not very likily IMO.

There are also several big pull outs along the way too the kebler trailhead as well as @ the kebler trailhead itself.

Marlene has said "No overnight parking"

fact of the matter is are they (gunnison county) going to enforce it??

IMO (and if history doesn't set any sort of precedence) then the answer is NO they will not enforce it.

I can honestly say that I havn't seen a GCS @ the Kebler trailhead or CB for that matter in over a yr.

Again I apologize if I have misled you in any way.

I will let you know what I find out @ the Dec 15th meeting.

I'm going to push to have us (snotrackers) plow the road from the bathrooms to the existing trailhead for the 4m ride only. then after we will push snow back onto the road to close it.

clint

Clint is still working on a solution for our weekend of riding, and we will find someplace to accomodate those who what to bring their campers, but trailhead camping is looking slimmer for the weekend.

We will do our best for those want to bring campers, I know we will have a place for you to camp, the only question is how close to the trailhead we can get you. Also working a back door, I have someone talking to a Sargeant in the Sherrif's office, seeing what the likelyhood of lack of enforcement would be that weekend.

As a side note, this is exactly why we need to support organizations such as the Colorado Snowmobile Association and Blue Ribbon Coalition, a few voices don't speak as loud as many voices, and we DON'T want to loose more riding areas. As Clint said, showing Gunnison and the area how much snowmobilers can bring in to the community in one weekend is a good way to show how much they should support snowmobiliing as a winter sport.

Those pics were taken today?! Fricking sweet! Can't wait till I get a chance to ride down there!

GunniTankDriver - LOL!!

Yes! Exactly.
I rode all over CB South this morning w/ snow well over the hood. My 5-year old loved it. Another 8-10" fell throughout the day down here - more in town and up at the Mountain.

I'm sure that up at our property in Irwin there is 4-6' plus, of new snow.
Can't wait to head up the hill this weekend.

We ate diner in town tonite, and there are 15' snow piles up and down Elk!

From the CB News:

**STORM UPDATE, Friday, Dec 7 1:45 p.m.**

Take precautions

With at least 30 inches of snow on the ground in less than 24 hours and more snow forecasted, Gunnison County officials are asking residents to take precautions. According to the NOAA Grand Junction office, the winter storm watch is set to expire on Saturday at 6 p.m.

ERD

As of Friday, December 7 at noon, the Colorado State Patrol had shut down Highway 50 between Mayfield and Sargeants (Monarch Pass) and closed Highway 114 from its intersection with Highway 50 to Saguache. Officials said they were hopeful the roads would reopen on Friday. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Highway 135 is not set for scheduled closure—although that could change as weather conditions fluctuate. For current conditions on the local roadways, log on to www.dot.state.co.us.

NOAA meteorologist Jim Daniels says NOAA is forecasting between 6 to 12 inches more snow in the West Elks on Friday night and 3 to 6 inches Saturday, with snow showers becoming lighter throughout the day. Wind is anticipated to be steady from the southwest between 10-15 mph and gusting to 35 to 40 mph.

Crested Butte town manager Susan Parker said the town has not declared a state of emergency but she urged residents to take precautions.

As of Friday, December 7 at noon, Parker said the town is only plowing Elk and Whiterock avenues until midnight. Parker requests that residents try not to park on those streets because they’re being used as emergency access and for Mountain Express busses. After midnight, plow drivers will start working on residential streets.

Parker says the town may experience an electricity outage at some point during the storm, because of the heavy nature of the falling snow. Parker says residents should prepare by keeping plenty of nonperishable goods, candles, flashlights and other supplies on hand.

Mt. Crested Butte police officer Jeff Ewert reminds residents that there is no parking on residential streets in Mt. Crested Butte. “Any cars left will be towed,” he says. There is also a chain restriction on any vehicles 10,000 lbs or greater.

With an epic ski day predicted for Saturday and the Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s Ski-Free promotion continuing, Ewert says the police department is urging drivers with two-wheel vehicles to have chains or stud tires to eliminate back-ups on Gothic Road between Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte.

Finally, Parker requests residents to be patient as the town recovers from the massive storm. “It’s going to take some time to dig out,” she says.

Awesome Rob!!! Thanks for the update!!!

We will have to get together this year for sure!!!

Going to talk the group about making this ride

Fuggggers.... I am stuck over here in Shanghai.... It is just killing me to see what I am missing out on:(

How much new did CB get from this last storm?
Planning on being out there next week.
Hoping to make it to the forum ride also, want to get the longest drive award(1500 miles one way)
Going to try to get Bill(Harmon Highjacker) to come to the forum ride also.
Will like to see how many will follow him all day.

AllRevvedup - you're check is in the mail. Next someone is going to bring out the ol' stuck pics!! ;-)

I rode Irwin this afternoon for a an hour or so - PICS to come.. the snow is setting up a bit, and it is deep in the trees and on north west aspects.

However, there are some thin spots where the wind moved snow away - since there really was no base before these two back to back storms. The trail is getting bumped out a bit in some areas - but I think GAR & CB Rob or Turbo were going to run the BR2K again soon.

I'd be up for going out for a few hours on Friday - who else is interested?
