Caribou Hills

We were told that it was open and they have a long track record of NOT taking down the signs even if it is open.. No harm no foul. And there were alot of tracks already there.. Guess I'm not the only dummy! LOL.
I might have to break out the big cat if this powder stays around.. I got planted a couple of times with the 121.

We still need to trim out the inside of the cabin inc. paneling and ceilings but it's warm and livable!

Talked to the Refuge and it is not OPEN IN THE HIGH COUNTRY till the low lands get enough it is only going to take a few of you to really ruin it for the rest of us !!!!!!!!!!

went to the hills today. went in through centenial. We went in the refuge accidently and bypassed the part with the sign, but we didnt go in far at all. And on our way out, there was 1 little sign stapled to a tree and said it was closed. didnt think it was a big deal and there was a lot of tracks going in. BUT, if you like boondocking then the hills is the place to be. Theres some deep, fun snow to be found in some of the swamps farther up. Awesome awesome day of riding. even tho the light sucked all day.

I'm betting Centennial was still beat to ****? Were the trails still drifted bad?
Were you riding up in the northor south hills?

I'm thinking we need to get a ride going. There seems to be a lot of people who ride these hills

(Sounds like a good idea, I'd be game.)

Just a side note... I'm gone during the summer months, but are you allowed to ride 4 wheelers and other ATV's during the summer in the refuge. I was talking w/ a fellow that said you could. If this is true, it seems ridiculious that we can't be riding sleds in there right now. There is plenty of snow cover, more then in years past when the high country has been open...? If ATV's are indeed allowed, it would seem like a contradiction to keep it closed to sleds. Just a question... can anyone confirm? Anyway, thankfully there is some great snow outside the refuge right now. One more good dump and it'll be opened is my guess.

No, the refuge is NEVER open to atvs or anything like that in the summer. Horses or human feet, that is it. The problem with the folks that rule the knwf is that they almost always open and close they ENTIRE refuge as a whole unit. This means until they have the magic amount of snow out Swanson river, the high country of Caribou Hills does not get opened. There have been a handful of years where we have been able to convince them that they should spilt the areas and open the Caribou Hills portion. The Chugach national forest folks are extremely good at doing this and I really applaude their effects to do so. The KNWR folks could really learn from them.
Sorry about the rant here, but that is really a pet peave.

Thanks for the clarification... and I couldn't agree w/ you more about how they open/close the KNWR. I'm sure it makes things easier for them to lump the whole refuge togeather, but in reality, it doesn't make any sence.

This weekend I will be busy intalling new hyfax on my sled and going through the rear skid but my daughter and I will be up for a ride next Sunday if anyone is up for it.
Gonna have to keep it sane since my daughter will be there.

I'll also be there again on Saturday. I've made five trips so far this year and each time it keeps getting better. This new snow should really make it sweet. This is looking like a pretty good year so far.

I'm reporting from out east of Homer, and we have around 3' at the house... We're quite a bit lower than the box-car hills, or ptarmigan head.... and from those that have been able to make it out far enough the rumor is that its bottomless. It just keeps pukin snow, so bring your paddle tracks.... or a shovel.

Thats what I like to hear. :D As of 6:30am its still snowing in Kenai. My buddies and I will be out there saturday. Hopefully be out oilwell by 9 or so.

From the 1400 foot elevation east of Homer, three feet on the ground, a foot since yesterday. Very cold and fluffy. Needs to set up some before it's real ridable. I can't report on the hills as my neck is still trying to heal from surgery and I don't expect to be able to ride this winter, so it's gonna be a deep snow year.

Still puking snowing... plan on big tracks to get anywhere, faceshots all day, and bring a shovel to dig yourself out. Its awesome.....

If any of you are headed this way drop a line... we're usually riding every day and would be fun to have some more people along.
