Its a never ending education Tony.
Only those who have been bitten can understand how little tuning changes can make very distinct changes in the machines attitude..

They are just dumb pieces of metal waiting for US to tell them what to do.":peep::peep::face-icon-small-hap

Power jet cables

What's the deal on the remote power jet cables? I've pm'd twister a couple of times and no response. I want to build a turbo, but I have no desire to open hoods all ride long. Adjusting from the seat is the only practical way. I have means to develop my own, but I would rather just buy a set an skip the design process.

Gus, last time I talked to you ya said you had a set coming. Did you ever get them?

To anyone else, where can I find some remote jet cables?

I will talk to him.

He is baried in boats and work right now, so he is not on here much. If at all. It may not be my place to say this but he got beat up by so many people on the cost, I think he just said forget about it. He was only making maybe 5$ a set.

If he doesnt want to deal with it, maybe he will give you the place where he buys the parts.

If anyone is dead serious on having a set like CBX is, let me know and I will try to get it worked out.

Twister is one of the best people you will ever meet. Shoot he came over on his 40th b-day and helped me move furniture out of my basement... cause we had water come in. He will come over afterworkin a graveyard shift with no sleep and help work on my sled... that is the kind of guy he is... HIS PLATE IS JUST VERY FULL, please be patient...

Gus... if you dont have a set let me know, all the help you have given us, I will be glad to get you a set or even give you the ones off my sled...

I know how the full plate deal goes.

As long as they are under the 400-500 range they would be more than worth it.

I never had time to get with him .

My plate was full also.

I would really love a set or two for that matter.
When you can, or he can,, I will take 2 sets for , just e mail me or call my cell with cost and I'll send a check.
cost is not an issue to me. I really do so little changing to my tune that I forget to order them till someone mentions it.

They are worth having and worth paying for whatever the cost.

A little more feedback on my project.

I had a chance to get in a nice ride at around 9500 to 11K. I was trying out a few things this weekend so I felt like I was starting over a bit. I had new needles for my Cutler 48 carbs. They seemed to work out pretty nice. I was using a different helix for the secondary from OVS, as well as a higher gear ratio.

The sled was acting rich on top but the O2 and exh temps were indicating lean. I screwed around richening and increasing fuel pressure until it just about wouldn't run past 1/2 throttle. I finally said heck with it...if she dies she dies. and I screwed in the power jets quite a few turns........OMG. Rock and roll baby.

The exhaust temps were over 1600, the O2 was over 14 but I just didn't care. I was going to the limit. I made a full pull up about a 1200ft vertical slope and she never hesitated or snorted or peetered off or anything bad......just ran like a very big big dog at 12# of boost. During the rest of the ride, I ended up richening it a bit more but never got the temps below 1400 nor the O2 below 13.......nor did the pistons(weiscos) go away.

I know a lot of guys have mentioned that the gauges just don't work for them, but this sure makes me shake my head in wonder?????????

Tony.
I've seen that on the egt when at the merge of the y pipe. or slightly further out from the merge.

the 02 ??? I never have seen them LOOK like they are acting acordingly on a carbed 2 stroke.
they go lean as hell when overrevving tooo..

Good riding again old man.....

Gus

That's interesting. Boy does that call make sense. Since I have always run twin pipes(probes at 7" from piston), I was at a loss when I installed the probes in my wye pipe. I put them out as far as I could get them(6" from piston). I'll bet they are in sight of each other very close to the merge point. I'm hoping this accounts for the huge EGTs I get.

As far as over reving. That could be a very good possibilty too. The D&D pipe is tuned for 83-8700(according to dynotech articles) I was definitely buzzing it at all of 8700 this weekend. I can throw some more weight back in and see where it likes to run. It sure felt good at 8750........real gooooood!

Who ya callin Old man.....ya old fart......:hurt::devil:

PS: Thanks for baby sitting all of us turbo newbies...................yeah baby!

OK Gus, got the probes relocated to about 4" from the piston surface. Good for about 200 degrees reduction across the RPM band.

Went back to the same riding area, similar conditions. I did richen up about a 1/4 on the power jets, but I never touched it the rest of the day. The EGTs are still high but never went past 1400(used to be 1600). I also had the O2 on the lean side (high 12s and low 13s) but everything ran very well and consistant.

I came back to the truck on fumes. We ran through 13+ gallons and no hicups...er just a few on the way back to the truck when the fuel pressure would sit at 0 for a few seconds till the fuel sloshed around to the pickup.....whew.......LOL

We did a little loose comparison testing between the three turbos of the day.
We had an M8 turbo at 13+# a 1200 at 11# and mine at 10-11. Too close to really get a feel for a clear dominator. Who ever cheated the best got the upper hand.I feel very happy to be on the same mountain with my(our) home built setup.

Tony,,
All for one and one for all !!!!

you had a great year bud,, so did I.. I look forward to many more with friends like you and the rest of the folks on this thread..

happy summer

Gus.

Now if I can keep from braking anymore bones on the mx track I'll have a sweet summer too.Damn 9 year old is getting faster and he does not stop even when he crashes..LOL
Kids gonna make uncle Gus look bad before he even gets off his 65,, and I'm on a 250.....I love it ,, he's qualified #3 in his age group for the Lorreta lynns nationals this year,, we shall see...

Well our season ended a few weeks back. What did I learn this last season...wow! so much!

I learned that a big bore isn't neccessarily a bad candidate for a turbo....nor is an aftermarket pipe a bad candidate
Actually my Cutler 1000 had some pretty good port specs for a turbo. I had to reduce the compression a huge bunch however.
Found: that I could prolly spend years perfecting pipe/turbo/clutching combinations.
Found: there are many ways to get boost signals to regulators, blowoff valves and float bowls that change the tune and transition points of the whole setup tremendously.
Found: that huge carbs can work and still have plenty of response on the bottom end
Found: this motor when turbo charged took way more abuse without damage than it did N/A. Stupid things like running out of fuel(in the tank) during a big pull at 12#...no damage(even rattled the plugs loose...wow).
Found: with Gus and other folk's advice, that I had a great running start, but I still had to work out some unforseen issues.(mentioned through out the thread...LOL)

I finished the season with two problems:
I have a hiccup with overfueling occasionally when backing out of the throttle. It used to be terrible, but I have it almost worked completely out. I ran out of season, but I think I'm really close to kicking that bug out.

The second is fuel economy. My sled is worse than my buddy's T1200. and definitely way worse than another guys TM8. Prolly a factor of huge carbs, 8700rpm, or maybe a degree or two of higher transfer port opening, or maybe just beeing too safe(fat)..not sure. I'm pretty stoked about how this thing came through the season....so much so, that I'm ready to build another turbo sled.

I have found a wrecked M8 that I am going to experiment with this season to see if I can ride a little cheaper.... Going to build it for av gas. Yeah I'll prolly keep the EFI on it, but If the throttle response isn't there, ya never know, I do have extra sets of carbs...:face-icon-small-hap

PS: Thanks everyone and especially Gus for all the help this season.....it was a good'n!

Someday, soon I'll get out there during winter and put a face to the name.

You went where others have tried and failed, ( big carbed big bore turbo ).

You proved that with proper set up there is NO such thing as ""can't be done "".

your efi 8 will be more fun than the 1000 foe sure, it will be the daily driver that allows you to re aim the 1000 toward its full poetential.

add some compression, timing and use it for snowdrags !!!!! LOL

thanks for the memories Tony.

Tony is the FIRST to use 48mm carbs in a blowthru application !!!
You have etched your name in the turbo 2 stroke annals for all of time my friend.

My little mx'er made it in to the ameture nationals at lorretta lynns in tennesee !!!!
I'll be out of touch now till second week in august. its hot,, damn hot in tennesee in august...

I look forward to 2011 with ya Tony..

Thanks for the kind words Gus, but I can't brag big yet, as well as she ran, she was a little farther from perfect than I like to see. :face-icon-small-win

I found a lot of things that I would like to pass on from a "generic system" point of view. Most of the things I could improve upon were dealing with mounting and sealing. Exhaust and airbox would be two places that I want to spend a lot more time. I seemed to use more than my share of exhaust donuts, so I need a better springy dingy sysem. I got my airbox attachment pretty dang reliable but it could use a bit more engineering. I also found that vent/pressure hoses can not be "too protected"!

Other things that seemed to require attention: The mallory fuel regulator needed an adjustment twice per ride. Maybe a heat issue???? I found that grounding the motor and chassis helped with some sort of static charge that would affect my guages. Who knows, it could cause havoc with other things in the electrical system too. I found that when I run the turbo solid to the pipe that a 16(not 18) guage outlet pipe is mandatory.

Oh and very important(to me) the float bowl pressure hose has to be connected to the airbox away from the flow stream into the carbs. Somewhere inbetween the two carbs worked for me. Actually.... left the season looking at a different spot away from the airbox, but didn't have time to test it:face-icon-small-win

The things I didn't have to mess with: Oiling system: the injector pump fed the turbo consistantly. I also let it feed the bottom of the motor with the 0-20 Mobil 1.(no prob) I did replenish the 2-4 OZ of oil every weekend that it used. The oil box never puked.... life was good...LOL The external walbro fuel pump was never looked at again. The bridge rectifier never failed me. My pipe reinforcement tabs seemed to work. Never had a seam failure on the DD monster pipe all season.

Another thing I found being a guage geek, I loved my fuel pressure guage the most. It gave me three readings all at once. The most obvious was fuel, secondly I could see the boost signal was working and most importantly the electrical system was making enough power to run the system. When I was using the pipe signal to run the fuel reg I could also see what the exhaust back pressure was......way too cool!

I also found that clutching is quite different than I was expecting. I bought some good stuff from OVS that helped me to jump ahead in the learning curve.

Putting aside, me not expecting how much fuel this motor likes. Carb tuning is very basic and straight forward. My only carb bug was the (part throttle)let off enrichening(flooding) issue, but I see a slight issue with some of my EFI buddies sleds too. Mine is just more dramatic.

The very COOLEST thing about my morphadite setup was... with carbs... the sled started first time every time(during a ride) and two to three pulls at first start of the day. I used a primer system for first start and never again the rest of the day. I didn't have to use a bypass switch or other tricky contraptions.

I guess my advise to any one else wanting to do a home brew turbo. Do it for the knowledge and the huge amount of satisfaction(hopefully)...... don't do it cause it's cheaper..........cause it's prolly not.....LOL

PS: I guess I want some more knowledge...cause here I go again......TM8?.........heh heh heh

Hey Gus,

I found another advantage of using carbs.

You taught me to test everything so I've been prepping for my TM8. This is what I found:

The same pump that supplied my carbs with 40gph at 20psi will only supply barely 30 gph at 60 psi with a higher amperage draw.

So with carbs the pump is good for 400HP with EFI the same pump is only good for maybe 300HP(less if I need to go higher pressure). Gotta buy a bigger pump for EFI.

Chauk another point up for carbed turbos...LOL

Gus..... Good to see you put the banana hammock and sun tan lotion away for the summer... back to sleddin..

did anyone ever get any power-jet adjusters? i have a customer that wants them i would like a couple sets.
