Albany Parking Area

To use the old quote, "Give an Inch Take A Foot" seems very fitting for this discussion. Reading some of your posts, you do not seem mindful of what the rules and regulations of the parking area are. It is one of those situations where one person does something, then another observes this and starts to do it as well. Then another and another and then it is just a snowball effect which gets out of hand.

Ollies last post was spot on for what is happening at the parking area. The area is Day Use Only, and if you want to bring your fifth wheel or motor home you should make prior arrangements and not camp out in the Day Use Parking Area. Green Rock is posted NO OVERNIGHT PARKING, and people are ignoring that sign and camping at Green Rock as well. If some of you do not want a Law Enforcement presence when you come here then you need to police yourselves, otherwise Law Enforcement will be involved.

The money, lets take that a step further.

$800 a day X 3 days (a short trip) = $2400
Add in the fuel that we drop in to Laramie for the rig $900 a trip
That is $1700 a trip without the little things.
Take that times a minimum of three trips a year and your total is $5100.00
Big freaking deal. What about us locals that drive up there every single weekend?

Last season we (my riding partner and I) rode three days a week every week we could.

so, 2 sleds to fill = $60/day 3 times a week = $180/ week
fuel in truck = $90/week (with last winters diesel prices)

Lets just guess at 20 weeks of riding (started in mid november and ended sometime in march/april, others rode much longer). Thats $270 a week for 20 weeks. $5400 in just fuel.

Now, with that many miles you will be putting money into the dealerships, money for food and groceries, etc.

oh wait...

you flatlanders don't care about the locals because we don't put as much money into it as you :rolleyes::rolleyes:

edit: and thats just for those of us that live in Laramie. Ollie, tmk, and the others that live in Colorado have much more money invested with out of state registration, the added fuel costs, etc.

Everybody thinks they're a bigger super sledder than the next guy and spends more money than anyone. Its an expensive sport for everyone and I'm sure the businesses and our sport need everyone to survive. I need a new job, how do you get twenty 4 day work weeks?

I'm not the one that started going the math, just trying to prove a point that no matter how big of a spender a flatlander is, they are still the same as us. Which means they have no more right then us to tie up that parking lot.

you ever heard of 4-10's? Most of the industrial world out here works those...

Not to mention being a college student, being able to ride any evening and most afternoons.

Been at both Albany and Greenrock when 1 or 2 people screw it up for everyone, and their from all over, stupid people live everywhere, no one uses common sense or put themselves in the other guys shoes

PS you use alot of gas

PS you use alot of gas
We fueled up every sunday on our way up the mountain, so all the fuel in my truck wasn't just sledding. We just called it a sledding expense due to it being the cause of most of our miles.

And if you recall fuel prices from last winter, $90 wasn't even a full tank in my truck

the albany area has been subjected to a tremendous impact due to the popularity of the sport. what was just a small parking area belonging to the forest service has been slammed hard due to the area's appeal.

the area was expanded somewhat due to the request of the locals, to try and make it better and it was done to the extent of falling short of filing tremendous studies and paperwork due to I believe a 4 acre rule. (this crosses the border of environment impact implimentation).

The forest service, albany county, and state of wyoming have recognized this impact in so much that fees are now being charged to try and offset projected costs of maintaining the lot.

however, albany county is really one of the "poorest" counties of wyoming due to the mineral taxation that favors campbell, sweetwater counties and the richer property values in other counties. the university of wyoming really burdens albany county in demanding much but repaying little.

wyoming trails is trying to catch up with the impact but spends most of its revenues in grooming and administration.

the forest service has its hands full in administration and politics and unfortunately, makes little effort in real management of the resources it is trying to manage.

the locals are just trying to maintain status among the hundreds who use the area. due to this, many who tally their costs to get there, either have some ignorance or attitude on some common sense practices that allow for others to enjoy hassle free use of the area. many dump their trailers for days on end on the highway because they are too "frivelous" to pay 5 bucks a day or 30 a year. most other problems are listed.

its your sport,,,, show some respect of others. i have no issue with notifying whomever, to let the "evildoers" pay the price. if you act like an idiot, be treated like one. i would like to see some impounding of vehicles just to straighten out the bad ones, in total respect of the good ones and you all know where you rank.

wyoming trails is trying to keep up with the grooming that mega-horsepower and paddle track machines are demanding (and hundreds at that).
albany county personel are the ones that get you off of the mountain, to the shelters and ambulances along with unselfish help from local volunteers.
the medicine bow forest service spends untold hours doing something, i guess putting out cash boxes that someone has to be told to empty and maintain while figuring out that the snowmobile season is sometime between july and june.

i say, report and report often. get some of the screwballs in somewhat of a bind and maybe they will go somewhere else and maybe straighten up. there are untold amounts of sledders that do everything right and the sport lives on because of them.

there you have it. let me know if I didn't get anything wright.

parking

The last time I saw the Snowy Range is in a national forest and is supported by all tax payers not just Wyoming. I take it some of you Wyoming riders think it's your private domain. This does make it right for anyone to not be curtious and thoughtfull about how you park.I'v been riding there since the late 1980's and stayed at in motels for years and pulled my trailer with a pickup, but the last few years i'v used a motorhome because of some special equipment needed because of heath issues and i'm simi handicaped. I park at green rock and have never been upset because someone double parks by me, I just wait untill they leave, and have helped people with parts, tools, etc. and warm place to work in my inclosed trailer. I'm not a greenhorn to high performance as I started developing electronic fuel in 1989 and have done 3 fuel injected turbos for our own use. If i'm up there and can help anyone stop by.I'll be in a Bluebird motorhome with a black trailer. By the way you are welcome to stop by for a cup of coffee, beer or just warm up. Just don't try to take my right to use my motorhome away because it's the only I way can still go ride. My son does after market parts for 4 wheeler and race cars and might be able to help on turbo and fuel injection problems.

Thanks

Garden City Ks,

I don't see where anyone is trying to take anything away from anyone. It is just getting rediculous. When you pull into a lot that can support 40 rigs and 35 of em have been parked there for days on end, it's not right. It's DAY parking.
Not a camp site.
If you want to camp out, stay at the local KOA.
And it must be nice to have all the time in the world to allow people to block you in and not care. When I get back and have to wait another 2 - 3 hours for some incosiderate azz to come back, it's time for things to change. If that means I call the forest service and have someone towed, I bet they don't do it again.

Show me where anyone said it is just for people from wyoming??
Local riders referes to people that drive up for the day. Not for a freekin week.

So why does the forest service build a lot to support a local business and local home owners?? That is a bunch of BS. The vast majority of folks parking there are staying at the lodge-why are we paying for their parking??   NO OVERNITE MEANS NO OVERNITE The lodge should provide parking for their guests on their property and not in a PUBLIC PARKING area.

It is wrong that the tax payers are supporting a lodge :mad::mad::mad:

Another way to look at it is this....

If all of the people camping in the lots left at night. If all of the people that leave their trailers there at night hooked up and pulled them away each day. If all of the people that stay at the lodge removed their vehicles. So the lot is completely empty at night.

Enter 7:00 am the next morning. The people camping, the a-holes that leave their trailers, the people staying at the lodge, the locals all converge on the same piece of real estate. What happens?

The problem persists! Reguardless of where you come from, what you drive, how much money you spend we all contribute to the congestion.

This congestion can, and in most cases, is managed by us the users. It only takes one rig to f- it all up. Weed out the problematic parkers and everything else works itself out.

Another thing that I thought of - Things might return to 'normal' now that the holidays are over. The issues may have been from people that were first timers. (wishful thinking?)

As mentioned above, I really think the berm would help. I also like the idea of all of us working together to encourage people that aren't paying. No need to be a jerk about it - just remind people that the money spent on that lot will pay for improvements and hopefully expansion.

It looks like it is snowing up there - a foot of fresh always helps to fix things right??

The main problem.
The snowies are getting more popular as more people from out east discover it.
Until we get larger lots we will continue to have problems (the berm would help a lot though).
I would like to see a section set aside for motor homes and campers.
Right now it's not there.

What is the berm you speak of? The pile of snow that used to be down the center of the lot?

Yep - In my opinion (and a few others as well - read: Ollie) the berm provided a physical structure that helped control the parking. It is gone this year and parking is a 'free-for-all'.

Where is the closest spot that you can officially camp overnight. I think ollie is right there is not enough parking overall. I was staying at the lodge on the
26th and 27th but on the afternoon of the 28th it started getting really crowded. Alot of those rigs were staying at the lodge but there was nowhere to park. Togwotee had a similar problem so they made a bigger lot. By the way the grooming was outstanding.

Garden City Ks,

Sorry to hear about your medical conditions, but you need to follow the rules like everyone else. As I previously stated, there is a sign posted at Green Rock that says NO OVERNIGHT PARKING. If you are camping out up there then you are in violation of the law. If you are just driving up each day, then there should be no problem. I know for a fact that the area is going to be getting much more enforcement as there seems to be a lot more problems this year than in the past. What I recomend is people just follow the rules, the majority of the problems will then solve themselves.

Unfortunetly, and this is the problem, I don't think there is a place up there that accepts overnight parking.
