Aftermath...

Wow, talk about wind load up top! Looked like a bunch of wind load, built up behind where an older slab slid away from.

That's the one I got caught in on Friday. Close call. Totalled the sled but I'm alive.

Lets see the pics of the one you were in on thurs then... I heard your boot was the only thing sticking out when the got to ya:face-icon-small-win

Got back to Nebraska Saturday from 3 days riding. There was some good snow to be found deep in the trees on the back side off trail U. By Saturday most areas were set up and tracked up pretty good in the usual places. Not good conditions until it snows good again in my opinion.

That isn't very good news at all. We have a trip planned for Wednesday - Sunday but if the snow is going to be bad we will probably push it back. Does anyone have the forecast for the next couple of weeks?

That area where you were at Scubba or very very close was one or two pockets over to the west is where a guy got killed. He slid with the avy into that bottom low bowl area and all the snow piled in on top. You were lucky.

Did you have your locator on? or a avy pack? just curious.

Think we saw your group earlier that day Friday. Glad to hear you're ok.
I agree on snow conditions though. Tree's have pretty good snow, but open areas are fairly tracked up with rocks showing here and there. They do need snow soon, especially since it was starting to get warm and windy when we left yesterday.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but 3 days riding and 2 avy rides, I would say you need to re-evaluate your approach to mountain riding and reading the terrain for avy risk. I'm by no means an expert, and maybe I'm more cautious than most, but even in the worst avy conditions we never see slides based on our risk assessment and decision on where to ride. Best defense in avy's is not to be in avy areas. IMO....

Is it worth a 9hr drive for a couple days of riding out there? Or would it be best to wait for some fresh. Thanks

That depends on how picky you are about snow conditions....

On sunday the snow was very set up (almost like march conditions.) with a few inches of soft snow on top. In the trees and north slopes the snow is better but warm temps in the high 20's and sun are taking a toll.

I live 20 min from the mtn and will be riding this weekend, imo snow like this is a good excuse to check out some new areas esp. those nasty creek bottoms you dont know if you can make it out of.

Just saying, I don't think you can justify scolding him for being on that hill, or even setting off 2 slides in 3 days. Judging by the picture it is semi freakish that that hill slid, and I don't see any real red flags, I would not have expected it to slid. Somedays/weekends it is just unavoidable, for the most part, that is a small hill, if it was larger I would say they were dumb for being on it, but to me it appears to be a safe hill, that for some reason on that day decided to slide.

Heck I don't think that thing ran out far or deep enough to bury a rider, maybe someone laying at the bottom of the hill but that is about it.
Eye opener, yes. Need for re-evaluation on approach to mountain sledding? No.

All that being said, who know what the other hill looked like, but I'm assuming this is the bigger slide beings its the one there is pictures of.

Stay safe, ride smart.

Id have to check my gps to verify this location with yours but Im fairly positive this is the same hill I had a issue on trying to side hill on Wednesday. I made a bad mistake and stuck it up towards the top. I treaded lightly and got out just fine but I was freaking out hoping it wasn't going to slide. It looks like it did the next day. Glad nobody was caught up in it. Its not a big hill but it scared me and made think a little more. I figured it was a little hill and id just side hill threw it until I stuck it and was looking down at the bottom, not a good feeling. Ride safe.

I don't think he will take it the wrong way. Some people like to trail ride more than others and our group including him like to ride trees and hills. We always know there is a risk in what we are doing, but that is what we choose to do ride hills. Don't think this is going to make us ride a different area. IMO
